One of our newest teachers. Miss Edna Rheault. projects the typical image of a French teacher. She's a petite woman, but powerful and full of energy. She graduated from Wayne State University and has her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Educa- tion. She enjoys listening to music, doing handcrafts, seeing good movies, and involv- ing herself in social activities. She has traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada, often camping out- doors. Miss Rheault would like to get as many people interested in the French language as possible. And in the future, she would like to get a dog. What kind? A French poodle, of course! Among our new teachers is a native Michigander. Mrs. Mary Riley. From there she went on to Marygrove and the Univer- sity of Detroit where she obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in History. Presently she is studying at Eastern Michigan Univer- sity for her Master’s Degree in Education. She has always wanted to be a teacher and has worked with Mr. Hudy at Mount Carmel High School in Wyandotte. Mrs. Riley has previously been a dance instruc- tor and a receptionist for WNIC. where she has had the chance to meet Bob Seger and James Taylor. Mrs. Riley’s personal goals are to be appreciated as a good teacher and friend to all. Sister Clare Charles received her Bachelor’s Degree from De Sales Univer- sity in Toledo and her Master’s Degree from De Paul University. Both degrees are in the field of Education. Sister pursued a career in Business Education because she had experience in business before entering religious life. Sister finds she derives the most satisfaction from her work when students are able to fulfill their desire for a good career position. Business courses, however, are not only for those facing such a career. Typing, according to Sister, is an esssential for everyone, and a sense of business helps all students prepare for their daily lives. After all. no one is exempt from shopping and budgeting. 24

Before coming to St. Alphoneus, Sr. Mery Willard served as principal of Rosary High School and assistant principal of Port Huron Catholic School. She received a BA from Sienna Heights College in Adrian, and a Master's Degree from the Catholic University of America. She completed her post-graduate studies at the University of Detroit. Sr. Willard’s major areas of study are Euro- pean History, Philosophy. Administration, and Counseling. She feels they provide opportunity for the instruction and direction of youth in relation to the family, community, Church, and government. Sister feels strongly about Catholic education, and, as far as she is concerned, it can be surpassed by nothing. Sr. Mary Jane has a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Sienna Heights College and a Master of Arts from the University of Detroit. Sr. Mary Jane taught at Dominican High, and St. Paul’s in Grosse Pomte. She also taught in the Bahamas. Sr. Mary Jane feels the best way to serve the Lord and spread the word of God is through a religious life. She was a volunteer worker at Detroit General Hospital. She feels that being a volunteer is an enlarging experience, ena- bling her to see another side of life. Sr. Mary Louise has a B.S. in Science from Sienna Heights College with a major in Mathematics and minors in Chemistry and English. She has a Master of Arts Degree from the University of Detroit in Mathematics. Sr. Mary Louise has always liked Mathematics. She likes it for the sim- ple reason that it always answers the question ’’why.” and there will always be a reasonable answer to that question. Sr. Mary Louise has always felt that the religious life has been her calling from God. She feels that it is the best way to serve her Catholic community in being a teacher and a sister. 23

There ere several former graduates here at Saint Alphonsus. one of whom is Mr. Raymond DeCeco. Mr. DeCeco grew up in Detroit and at- tended Francis Parkman and George Ford Junior High before entering Saint Alphon- sus where he graduated in 10 70. After graduation. Mr. DeCeco attended Wayne State University, where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education, with a minor in Social Science. Music has always been Mr. DeCeco's main interest. Mr. DeCeco is also a newlywed and he claims that married life agrees with him. His life’s dream is to one day become a millionaire, but for now he is content with teaching. Ms. Spitler is one of the new teachers that arrived at St. Alphonsus this year. She attended St. Thomas High School in Ann Arbor. She then attended U. of M.. Ann Arbor, where she studied nursing. After two years she took a break in her educa- tion. When she returned from her absence, she finished her education in the French Language. She lived in France, where she attended the University of Phonetics. Outside of teaching. Ms. Spitler sings with a small group of musicians, called The Word Of God Chorus, who perform inter- nationally. She also helps out in the Ann Ar- bor Christian Community. Along with being new to St. Alphonsus this year. Ms. McLain is new to the Detroit area. She was raised in Grand Rapids where she attended Union High School. Later she went to the University of Michigan where she majored in Biology. Since college, she has had many different jobs—from working in an emergency ward to teaching at Saline High School. Ms. McLain likes teaching because of the op- portunity to know and be with the students, and she hopes to continue teaching for many years. As a student, she feels that her most interesting experience was to assist in performing surgery. Ms. McLain chose her career because there is so much diversity in science. 25
