When Ms. Mery Rashid first discovered the world of music, she was six years old and beginning piano lessons. This developed into a big part of her life as she took the lead in several plays while attending St. Alphonsus and later in being an active part in performances at the University of Detroit, where she majored in music. She recently completed her Master’s Degree which combined her talent in music with her interest in foreign languages. One of Ms. Rashid's goals is to put forth the best Per- forming Arts Center in the Archdiocese, and she is glad that the students take such an active interest in the operettas here. Miss Kathleen Bliss is one of our new Algebra Biology teachers. This is her first year teaching after graduating from M.S.U. with a Bachelor of Science degree. She has traveled extensively in Europe, including Spain. Germany. Denmark and Holland, playing a flute with a band from Blue Lake Fine Arts Academy. Miss Bliss enjoys sports, reading, gardening and taking care of her 2 dogs. 3 parakeets. 2 cockateels and an African grey parrot. She loves the spirit of this school and hopes to relate to the students through her teaching. L J Mr. Thomas Cameron attended Edsel Ford High School and recently graduated from the University of Michigan where he majored in Journalism Education and mmored in English and Physical Education. While in college, he was the Executive Sports Editor for the campus newspaper, which gave him his journalistic background. Mr. Cameron enjoys sports and plays soft- ball and basketball for the Dearborn Recreation Department, and goes camp- ing with his wife during the summer mon- ths. He works with the Athletic Depart- ment as a trainer and would like to become more active in athletics by coaching. 22

Working towards developing strong minds and strong bodies. Miss Ellen Hurley is teaching not only Physical Education, but also Health and Psychology classes. After graduating from St. Francis Cabrini High School, she went on to Western Michigan University, majoring in Physical Education for Women with a Psychology minor. Upon graduation, she subbed for Dearborn public schools and then came to St. Alphonsus. In an attempt to expand the present programs our school offers. Miss Hurley, has stressed the need for girls to reach their full potential in sports. She is not pushing a projock image, but is rather try- ing to instill pride in participation . Sister Marie Harold entered religious life because she wanted to be closer to God among her fellow Religious. She attended Siena Heights College in Adrian. Michigan, followed by further studies at De Paul University and the University of Notre Dame. While at Notre Dame, she spent one year at neighboring St. Mary’s because the war time Marines occupied the university dorms. Following that experience. Sister attended the University of Michigan and studied Industrial Arts at Wayne State. The summer of ”7Q found Sister on an ex- cursion to Italy, where she had the oppor- tunity to visualize the many things she teaches in Latin, Art and Architecture. During her undergraduate years at Madonna College and her graduate work at U. of D.. Ms. Clare Celmer has earned degrees in English. Education. Theology. Latin, Social Studies, and Biology. This broad background has served her well in various teaching positions in both grade school and high school. She has taught at St. Al’s for a number of years and func- tions as English Department Chairperson. One of her goals as head of the depart- ment is to have every student successfully complete a semester of Composition, graduating with an ability to write well. In her spare time. Ms. Celmer enjoys reading, sewing, bowling, swimming and tending her numerous plants. 21

Before coming to St. Alphoneus, Sr. Mery Willard served as principal of Rosary High School and assistant principal of Port Huron Catholic School. She received a BA from Sienna Heights College in Adrian, and a Master's Degree from the Catholic University of America. She completed her post-graduate studies at the University of Detroit. Sr. Willard’s major areas of study are Euro- pean History, Philosophy. Administration, and Counseling. She feels they provide opportunity for the instruction and direction of youth in relation to the family, community, Church, and government. Sister feels strongly about Catholic education, and, as far as she is concerned, it can be surpassed by nothing. Sr. Mary Jane has a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Sienna Heights College and a Master of Arts from the University of Detroit. Sr. Mary Jane taught at Dominican High, and St. Paul’s in Grosse Pomte. She also taught in the Bahamas. Sr. Mary Jane feels the best way to serve the Lord and spread the word of God is through a religious life. She was a volunteer worker at Detroit General Hospital. She feels that being a volunteer is an enlarging experience, ena- bling her to see another side of life. Sr. Mary Louise has a B.S. in Science from Sienna Heights College with a major in Mathematics and minors in Chemistry and English. She has a Master of Arts Degree from the University of Detroit in Mathematics. Sr. Mary Louise has always liked Mathematics. She likes it for the sim- ple reason that it always answers the question ’’why.” and there will always be a reasonable answer to that question. Sr. Mary Louise has always felt that the religious life has been her calling from God. She feels that it is the best way to serve her Catholic community in being a teacher and a sister. 23
