After graduating from Edsel Ford High School. Assistant Principal Lawrence Suarez went on to Michigan State for his undergraduate work. He is now completing his graduate studies at Eastern Michigan. It is interesting to note that Mr. Suarez 16 one of few teachers to attend a public high school and then go on to teach and do administrative work in a Catholic high school. Speculating on the future of St. Alphon- sus, he sees us as always staying with a structured atmosphere, but feels there will be more diffusion of responsibility among the students, which will lead to greater motivation and participation. A Detroit native. Sr. Marie Arthur received her Bachelor’s from Sienna Heights College, and her Master’s from the Catholic University and U. of D. She has degrees in Social Studies. English, and Guidance. After college. Sister went on to be ad- minister of St. Theresa’s. St. Mary’s Royal Oak and Regina Dominican in Wilmut, Illinois. Sister’s family lives in Royal Oak and she has a brother in this parish. She became an Adrian Dominican Sister because she felt it was the work that the Lord designated for her. During her free time she enjoys work- ing with the senior sisters in gereontology and appreciates listening to different types of music. Working for 21 years at St. Alphonsus has been thrilling for Mrs. Louise McGuire. She enjoys the contacts with the students and the activity. After working the office of public schools for lOVa years, she finds the students here more responsive. Mrs. McGuire would like to stay on at St. Alphonsus and make one of her goals come true - having a larger office. A most memorable event for Mrs. McGuire was being able to enroll a group of students as first graders and later enroll them as Seniors. They presented her with a dozen roses, one for each year. Her free time is spent bowling, garden- ing. reading, fishing on Lake St. Clair and be- ing with her 9 year-old grandson. 13

After ten years and three promotions. Mr. James O'Donnell is our principal. He graduated from Catholic Central High School and then moved northeast to Saint John Fischer College in Rochester. New York, where he majored in English and minored in Social Studies. Upon graduation, he returned to the Detroit area and im- mediately began looking for a Catholic school in which to teach. After an interview with Sr. Agnes Charles and a look around the school, he decided St. Alphonsus was where he belonged. Now that Mr. O'Donnell has become principal, he is beginning to see things from a different perspective. To avoid being regarded as an administrative figurehead who is out of tune with the students. Mr. O'Donnell decided to teach a class this year. He hopes to see a better in- terpersonal relationship between the ad- ministration and the student body, and is constantly stressing the need for stronger communication ties. Commenting on the state of things this year, he feels that there is a good attitude among the students and I hope to see it perpetuate a spirit of cooperation in the school . 12

Being a librarian has always been Mrs. Sylvia Kumor’s life desire. She attended Wayne State University, married three years after graduation, and went back to school for her Master’s in Library Science after having her last child. In March of 1370 she received her degree. This is Mrs. Kumor’s ninth year here at St. Alphonsus, during which she gave her time first to the grade schoolers, and now to the high school students. At this point, Mrs. Kumor has no intentions of leaving this school, but plans to continue her dedication to the St. Al’s students. Sister Norite Marie is a great asset to the operation of Saint Alphonsus High School. She takes attendance of the school daily, along with helping Mrs. Maguire and Sister Marie Arthur in the office. The school and students greatly appreciate her dedicated work. Mrs. Elizabeth Barrett attended Regina High School in Cleveland. Ohio, and went on to St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame. In- diana. where she studied English Literature and Education. There she met her husband and came with him to the Detroit area. She then began teaching at St. Alphonsus, and attended night school at Oakland Univer- sity to earn her Master’s Degree in Reading Education. Mrs. Barrett has seen the English Department branch out into many areas stressing basic English skills as well as sound literary background. Mrs. Barrett will begin raising a family soon, and she would like to tutor Reading in the future. 14
