St. Alphonsus High School 7265 Calhoun Dearborn, Michigan -48126 Volume 13 3 7 Smiling at the recollection of my fears. The 1979 Arrow is dedicated to Mrs. Elizabeth Barrett in appreciation for the time and effort she has put forth during her five years as the books’ advisor. During this time. Mrs. Barrett’s knowledge of production procedures has been consistently instilled in the yearbook staff—during school as well as on her own time. After five years of perserverance in producing the St. Alphonsus yearbooks, the students and surrounding community can be proud of Mrs. Barrett’s work. This yearbook is created for the memories of the times we have shared this past year and would not be possible without her supervision and help. After ten years and three promotions. Mr. James O'Donnell is our principal. He graduated from Catholic Central High School and then moved northeast to Saint John Fischer College in Rochester. New York, where he majored in English and minored in Social Studies. Upon graduation, he returned to the Detroit area and im- mediately began looking for a Catholic school in which to teach. After an interview with Sr. Agnes Charles and a look around the school, he decided St. Alphonsus was where he belonged. Now that Mr. O'Donnell has become principal, he is beginning to see things from a different perspective. To avoid being regarded as an administrative figurehead who is out of tune with the students. Mr. O'Donnell decided to teach a class this year. He hopes to see a better in- terpersonal relationship between the ad- ministration and the student body, and is constantly stressing the need for stronger communication ties. Commenting on the state of things this year, he feels that there is a good attitude among the students and I hope to see it perpetuate a spirit of cooperation in the school . 12 After graduating from Edsel Ford High School. Assistant Principal Lawrence Suarez went on to Michigan State for his undergraduate work. He is now completing his graduate studies at Eastern Michigan. It is interesting to note that Mr. Suarez 16 one of few teachers to attend a public high school and then go on to teach and do administrative work in a Catholic high school. Speculating on the future of St. Alphon- sus, he sees us as always staying with a structured atmosphere, but feels there will be more diffusion of responsibility among the students, which will lead to greater motivation and participation. A Detroit native. Sr. Marie Arthur received her Bachelor’s from Sienna Heights College, and her Master’s from the Catholic University and U. of D. She has degrees in Social Studies. English, and Guidance. After college. Sister went on to be ad- minister of St. Theresa’s. St. Mary’s Royal Oak and Regina Dominican in Wilmut, Illinois. Sister’s family lives in Royal Oak and she has a brother in this parish. She became an Adrian Dominican Sister because she felt it was the work that the Lord designated for her. During her free time she enjoys work- ing with the senior sisters in gereontology and appreciates listening to different types of music. Working for 21 years at St. Alphonsus has been thrilling for Mrs. Louise McGuire. She enjoys the contacts with the students and the activity. After working the office of public schools for lOVa years, she finds the students here more responsive. Mrs. McGuire would like to stay on at St. Alphonsus and make one of her goals come true - having a larger office. A most memorable event for Mrs. McGuire was being able to enroll a group of students as first graders and later enroll them as Seniors. They presented her with a dozen roses, one for each year. Her free time is spent bowling, garden- ing. reading, fishing on Lake St. Clair and be- ing with her 9 year-old grandson. 13 Being a librarian has always been Mrs. Sylvia Kumor’s life desire. She attended Wayne State University, married three years after graduation, and went back to school for her Master’s in Library Science after having her last child. In March of 1370 she received her degree. This is Mrs. Kumor’s ninth year here at St. Alphonsus, during which she gave her time first to the grade schoolers, and now to the high school students. At this point, Mrs. Kumor has no intentions of leaving this school, but plans to continue her dedication to the St. Al’s students. Sister Norite Marie is a great asset to the operation of Saint Alphonsus High School. She takes attendance of the school daily, along with helping Mrs. Maguire and Sister Marie Arthur in the office. The school and students greatly appreciate her dedicated work. Mrs. Elizabeth Barrett attended Regina High School in Cleveland. Ohio, and went on to St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame. In- diana. where she studied English Literature and Education. There she met her husband and came with him to the Detroit area. She then began teaching at St. Alphonsus, and attended night school at Oakland Univer- sity to earn her Master’s Degree in Reading Education. Mrs. Barrett has seen the English Department branch out into many areas stressing basic English skills as well as sound literary background. Mrs. Barrett will begin raising a family soon, and she would like to tutor Reading in the future. 14 Mr. Robert Hudy attended St. Andrew High School and went on to W.S.U. where he received his B.S. in Health and Physical Education. He then taught at Mount Carmel High School in Wyandotte. There he taught English. Science. History. Phys. Ed. end Mass Communication. During this time he married and involved himself in outdoor sports such as backpacking. He looks forward to trying his hand at mountain climbing and hang gliding. Mr. Hudy’s goals for his career at St. Alphonsus are to help upgrade the Physical Education Department through non- competitive activity and to introduce boys’ Volleyball and Co-ed tennis. With all the good things happening at St. Alphonsus. Mr. Hudy should be here for a long time. E. - Mrs. Rosemary Maynard spent her school years in San Benito. Texas. From there she came to the Detroit area and began commuting to Wayne State Univer- sity. In between schooling, she found herself busy raising three sons and a daughter. But fate had a hand in things, and her stretch of motherhood served to enrich the final outcome of her career. She decid- ed to continue her education at Mercy Col- lege. majoring in Home Economics Educa- tion with Social Studies as a minor. When asked her opinion of St. Alphonsus. Mrs. “Maynard replied, It's nice to be your own department head—and the whole department! Here at St. Alphonsus. Mr. Maci is one of the best comedians, but also one of the best English teachers. He graduated from H.F.C.C. and Central Michigan University with an Associate of Arts and a B.S. in Education. He enjoys teaching and wants to present learning in a fun and highly scholastic style. Sports such as canoeing and camping keep him in shape. He also coaches a pee-wee hockey team. While in the Army, Mr. Maci was a teletype operator and received a citation for setting up communications between Managuan and Nicaraguan people during their infamous earthquake. 15 Mr. Donald Dixon grew up in Dearborn and attended Edsel Ford High School. He went on to the University of Michigan where he graduated with majors in History and English. He has always been interested in literature, especially poetry, because he sees the beautiful way that people can ex- press themselves and let their feelings be known. When not working. Mr. Dixon enjoys the pleasures that music can bring, and the adventures of camping. His interests are revealed through the various jobs he has held. Aside from working as a page in a library and a camp counselor, he put himself through college by playing guitar. Ms. Carolyn Nord was born on Detroit's west side but her high school days were spent at the Felician Academy. She receiv- ed her BA at Madonna College, where she majored in English and minored in both Theology History. Ms. Nord has taught grades one through eight and also adult education programs. This is the first time in the history of Ms. Nord's career that she has taught in a high school. Miss Nord came to St. Alphonsus because she felt the student body cared about their education, and had heard of the dances, plays, music and sports. Mr. Thomas Rashid graduated from Eastern Michigan University where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Education with a major in History and a minor in Physical Education. He first came to work here at St. Alphonsus as a trainer on the coaching staff. Last year he accepted the position of Athletic Director, an extensive job that he is well trained for. He hopes to see more enthusiasm toward athletics by players and spec- tators alike. In Mr. Rashid’s eyes, being part of St. Alphonsus can be a fun and en- joyable experience, and he feels gratified to be back at his old high school. 16 Mr. John Rashid was born and raised in Dearborn and attended St. Alphonsus Grade School and High School. Here he developed a strong relationship with God. which became the focal point of his career and personal philosophy. He graduated from the University of Detroit, majoring in Theology end History, and minoring in Philosophy and English. Later he received a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Michigan. Mr. Rashid feels his job is worthwhile and satisfying when students enthusiastically learn the teachings and beliefs of the Church and carry this enthusiasm to adulthood. Mr. Michael Quail went from Allen Park High School to Wayne State University where he majored in Mathematics and Psychology. He is presently working on his Master of Arts in Mathematics. During his years at Wayne he had some odd jobs such as transporting bodies—dead, that is—from the hospital to the morgue. As a teacher at St. Alphonsus. he would like to get everybody actively involved with all events. In his spare time, he likes to go camping, canoeing, and commune with nature. If he wasn't teaching. Mr. Quail says he’d either like to be a tennis or bowling pro. To become a counselor. Mrs. Marilyn Reagan had much schooling to tackle. After graduating from Shrine of the Little Flower High School, she attended Marygrove College, majoring in Sociology with a Psychology minor. She later went on to earn her Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling at Wayne State University. Among her other accomplishments, she worked with the handicapped at a school in Royal Oak. and as a substitute teacher. Mrs. Reagan immediately strikes you as someone who is always willing to give you help. While raising five children, she found and made time to listen with an open mind. 17 Fr. Ralph Quane feels comfortable at St. Alphonsus despite the fact that it is his first year here. He cites as the reason for this the small size of the school and the resultant well-defined school spirit. The students, he finds, are friendly to strangers and show a genuine desire to make people feel welcome. When Fr. Quane relaxes after a long day. he can be found reading Patristic Literature or listening to music. He was a musician before attending the seminary. When his reason for recreation turns from relaxing to relieving tension, he takes his frustrations out on raquet ball court, play- ing one of his favorite games. St. Al’s graduates always seem to come home again, but only a few return on such a long term basis as Mrs. Margaret Skora. After receiving her degree from Mercy College and teaching for a few years in the Detroit Public School system. Mrs. Skora has returned home to teach History and Government. She is presently working on a Master’s Degree at the University of Michigan at Dearborn. Because she has lived in this community all her life, Mrs. Skora feels she can under- stand the students more effectively. She feels more relaxed here than in the Detroit Schools because this is a smaller institu- tion which enables a teacher to get closer to the students. Mrs. Margaret Duelo has attended several schools in her academic career. After graduating from South High School, she attended Grand Rapids Junior College. From there, she proceeded to Michigan State University. Her final educational stop was the University of Michigan. Mrs. Duelo has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business and a Vocational Certificate. Now that her children are through high school and she has finshed with such responsibilities as having her son’s float built at her home. Mrs. Duelo can spend more time doing the things she enjoys most. Among these are bowling and watching baseball games. Baseball has been her favorite sport ever since she herself played on a team as a young girl. 18 Mrs. Dolores Musson graduated from St. Andrews High School, and went on to the University of Detroit where she obtain- ed an English Major and History Minor. She also earned some graduate credits at the University of Michigan. Mrs. Musson formerly taught in a public school in Dear- born Heights. However. St. Al's. Mrs. Musson says, answers the important question. How will a person be. emotionally and physically, when he or she graduates?” Mr. Patrick O'Connor attended Catholic Central High School before attending the University of Wyoming where he received degrees in General Science and Biology, and did his graduate work at U. of M. He receiv- ed a wrestling scholarship to the Univer- sity of Wyoming but had to stop wrestling because he had a knee operation. Mr. O’Connor taught English as a foreign language in Portugal. Teaching in Europe made him feel left out because he could only speak English, while the Portugese people spoke five to six languages. Among Mr. O ’Connor’s interests is working at the Crisis Intervention Center, counseling those considering murder and suicide. Miss Berma Anderson is a small town girl from Ithica. Michigan. Art has always been her main in- terest although her first art class didn’t come until Junior High School. She attended Alma College where she majored in Art. During college. Miss Anderson worked in museums with children, in a community education center, and in a pre-school. After college, she moved to the east side of Detroit and prefers the big city to the small town life. Miss Anderson began her teaching career at St. Alphonsus. a job which she finds enjoyable because of the people. She says. You don’t have to ’know’ how to draw, it’s what the eyes see. Everyone can draw; everyone is an artist in some way.” 19 Before coming to teach at St. Alphon- sus, Mrs. Deborah Romo attended Cabrini High School where she played basketball, baseball, and was a cheerleader. After high school she attended Eastern Michigan University where she made the Dean's List each semester. With her teaching career, Mrs. Romo doesn’t have many spare moments. In the free time she does have. Mrs. Romo ex- pands her interests in Karate, in which she has received a yellow stripe and a yellow belt. She is also coaching track, and basketball at her alma mater, Cabrini. Not only does Mrs. Romo enjoy working with kids educationally, she would also like to guide them athletically, someday becoming a girls' athletic director. Ms. Barbara Kuzdzal. our veteran Spanish teacher, is one of the most qualified language teachers around. After graduating from Riverside High School. Ms. Kuzdzal went to Eastern Michigan Univer- sity for her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Spanish. She also spent some time in Spain doing graduate work. While in Spam. Ms. Kuzdzal not only took academic classes but got a first hand look at the cultural aspects of the country. She lived with a local family and was forced to speak the language at all times. When ask- ed if her experience in Spam have helped with her teaching here at St. Al's, she answered with a exhuberant. Yes! After graduating from the University of Michigan with a B.S. in Mathematics. Ms. Judith Gill moved to northern Michigan where she started to raise a son and daughter. Ms. Gill enjoys traveling and has seen Florida, Tennessee. Canada, New York, and Washington D.C. Someday she would like to be able to say she has seen the entire world. Ms. Gill also enjoys sewing, dancing, reading, and cooking. In the near future, she would like to establish a cater- ing business or open a restaurant; but. at present, helping others learn Math more easily is her goal. Here at St. Al’s. she would like to introduce games to the Mathematics Department, which supply the students with new knowledge. 20 Working towards developing strong minds and strong bodies. Miss Ellen Hurley is teaching not only Physical Education, but also Health and Psychology classes. After graduating from St. Francis Cabrini High School, she went on to Western Michigan University, majoring in Physical Education for Women with a Psychology minor. Upon graduation, she subbed for Dearborn public schools and then came to St. Alphonsus. In an attempt to expand the present programs our school offers. Miss Hurley, has stressed the need for girls to reach their full potential in sports. She is not pushing a projock image, but is rather try- ing to instill pride in participation . Sister Marie Harold entered religious life because she wanted to be closer to God among her fellow Religious. She attended Siena Heights College in Adrian. Michigan, followed by further studies at De Paul University and the University of Notre Dame. While at Notre Dame, she spent one year at neighboring St. Mary’s because the war time Marines occupied the university dorms. Following that experience. Sister attended the University of Michigan and studied Industrial Arts at Wayne State. The summer of ”7Q found Sister on an ex- cursion to Italy, where she had the oppor- tunity to visualize the many things she teaches in Latin, Art and Architecture. During her undergraduate years at Madonna College and her graduate work at U. of D.. Ms. Clare Celmer has earned degrees in English. Education. Theology. Latin, Social Studies, and Biology. This broad background has served her well in various teaching positions in both grade school and high school. She has taught at St. Al’s for a number of years and func- tions as English Department Chairperson. One of her goals as head of the depart- ment is to have every student successfully complete a semester of Composition, graduating with an ability to write well. In her spare time. Ms. Celmer enjoys reading, sewing, bowling, swimming and tending her numerous plants. 21 When Ms. Mery Rashid first discovered the world of music, she was six years old and beginning piano lessons. This developed into a big part of her life as she took the lead in several plays while attending St. Alphonsus and later in being an active part in performances at the University of Detroit, where she majored in music. She recently completed her Master’s Degree which combined her talent in music with her interest in foreign languages. One of Ms. Rashid's goals is to put forth the best Per- forming Arts Center in the Archdiocese, and she is glad that the students take such an active interest in the operettas here. Miss Kathleen Bliss is one of our new Algebra Biology teachers. This is her first year teaching after graduating from M.S.U. with a Bachelor of Science degree. She has traveled extensively in Europe, including Spain. Germany. Denmark and Holland, playing a flute with a band from Blue Lake Fine Arts Academy. Miss Bliss enjoys sports, reading, gardening and taking care of her 2 dogs. 3 parakeets. 2 cockateels and an African grey parrot. She loves the spirit of this school and hopes to relate to the students through her teaching. L J Mr. Thomas Cameron attended Edsel Ford High School and recently graduated from the University of Michigan where he majored in Journalism Education and mmored in English and Physical Education. While in college, he was the Executive Sports Editor for the campus newspaper, which gave him his journalistic background. Mr. Cameron enjoys sports and plays soft- ball and basketball for the Dearborn Recreation Department, and goes camp- ing with his wife during the summer mon- ths. He works with the Athletic Depart- ment as a trainer and would like to become more active in athletics by coaching. 22 Before coming to St. Alphoneus, Sr. Mery Willard served as principal of Rosary High School and assistant principal of Port Huron Catholic School. She received a BA from Sienna Heights College in Adrian, and a Master's Degree from the Catholic University of America. She completed her post-graduate studies at the University of Detroit. Sr. Willard’s major areas of study are Euro- pean History, Philosophy. Administration, and Counseling. She feels they provide opportunity for the instruction and direction of youth in relation to the family, community, Church, and government. Sister feels strongly about Catholic education, and, as far as she is concerned, it can be surpassed by nothing. Sr. Mary Jane has a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Sienna Heights College and a Master of Arts from the University of Detroit. Sr. Mary Jane taught at Dominican High, and St. Paul’s in Grosse Pomte. She also taught in the Bahamas. Sr. Mary Jane feels the best way to serve the Lord and spread the word of God is through a religious life. She was a volunteer worker at Detroit General Hospital. She feels that being a volunteer is an enlarging experience, ena- bling her to see another side of life. Sr. Mary Louise has a B.S. in Science from Sienna Heights College with a major in Mathematics and minors in Chemistry and English. She has a Master of Arts Degree from the University of Detroit in Mathematics. Sr. Mary Louise has always liked Mathematics. She likes it for the sim- ple reason that it always answers the question ’’why.” and there will always be a reasonable answer to that question. Sr. Mary Louise has always felt that the religious life has been her calling from God. She feels that it is the best way to serve her Catholic community in being a teacher and a sister. 23 One of our newest teachers. Miss Edna Rheault. projects the typical image of a French teacher. She's a petite woman, but powerful and full of energy. She graduated from Wayne State University and has her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Educa- tion. She enjoys listening to music, doing handcrafts, seeing good movies, and involv- ing herself in social activities. She has traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada, often camping out- doors. Miss Rheault would like to get as many people interested in the French language as possible. And in the future, she would like to get a dog. What kind? A French poodle, of course! Among our new teachers is a native Michigander. Mrs. Mary Riley. From there she went on to Marygrove and the Univer- sity of Detroit where she obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in History. Presently she is studying at Eastern Michigan Univer- sity for her Master’s Degree in Education. She has always wanted to be a teacher and has worked with Mr. Hudy at Mount Carmel High School in Wyandotte. Mrs. Riley has previously been a dance instruc- tor and a receptionist for WNIC. where she has had the chance to meet Bob Seger and James Taylor. Mrs. Riley’s personal goals are to be appreciated as a good teacher and friend to all. Sister Clare Charles received her Bachelor’s Degree from De Sales Univer- sity in Toledo and her Master’s Degree from De Paul University. Both degrees are in the field of Education. Sister pursued a career in Business Education because she had experience in business before entering religious life. Sister finds she derives the most satisfaction from her work when students are able to fulfill their desire for a good career position. Business courses, however, are not only for those facing such a career. Typing, according to Sister, is an esssential for everyone, and a sense of business helps all students prepare for their daily lives. After all. no one is exempt from shopping and budgeting. 24 There ere several former graduates here at Saint Alphonsus. one of whom is Mr. Raymond DeCeco. Mr. DeCeco grew up in Detroit and at- tended Francis Parkman and George Ford Junior High before entering Saint Alphon- sus where he graduated in 10 70. After graduation. Mr. DeCeco attended Wayne State University, where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education, with a minor in Social Science. Music has always been Mr. DeCeco's main interest. Mr. DeCeco is also a newlywed and he claims that married life agrees with him. His life’s dream is to one day become a millionaire, but for now he is content with teaching. Ms. Spitler is one of the new teachers that arrived at St. Alphonsus this year. She attended St. Thomas High School in Ann Arbor. She then attended U. of M.. Ann Arbor, where she studied nursing. After two years she took a break in her educa- tion. When she returned from her absence, she finished her education in the French Language. She lived in France, where she attended the University of Phonetics. Outside of teaching. Ms. Spitler sings with a small group of musicians, called The Word Of God Chorus, who perform inter- nationally. She also helps out in the Ann Ar- bor Christian Community. Along with being new to St. Alphonsus this year. Ms. McLain is new to the Detroit area. She was raised in Grand Rapids where she attended Union High School. Later she went to the University of Michigan where she majored in Biology. Since college, she has had many different jobs—from working in an emergency ward to teaching at Saline High School. Ms. McLain likes teaching because of the op- portunity to know and be with the students, and she hopes to continue teaching for many years. As a student, she feels that her most interesting experience was to assist in performing surgery. Ms. McLain chose her career because there is so much diversity in science. 25 26 When Dreams Become Reality In a style befitting King Arthur himself. Homecoming ' 7S proved to be an unforgettable evening. The week preceding the big day. fire-up week, was a source of amusement for all with hat day. shoe day. button day. stomp-em day. and finally fire-up day. At the pep rally, a roar of enthusiasm followed the appearance of a fire engine carrying the Varsity Cheerleaders. The following day. October 'yA, with spirit abounding, the parade got off the ground at the Schaefer Building with the band in the lead, followed by the honor guards and then the Queen's float. Gracing this year’s float was the Queen. Paula Fusco, and her court, comprised of Oonna LeDuc. Jenny Jarrell. Veronica Brostowski, and Vickie Wisniewski. This year the Juniors won the float trophy with the fiery motto. The Arrow’s Are Oregon The Pioneers Behind.” At 7:30 that evening, the dance. entitled 'CAMELOT. started and proved to be a success. With the gym decorated knights-of-old style, a fitting mood was created. Each class had its own flag, and different comers of the gym were decorated with knights, a balcony, a Shrine to Mary and an Enchanted Garden. At the close of the evening Paula was crowned by Father Quane and then she and Mark Perry started the traditional Queen’s Dance. In all. the entire weekend was unforgettable, with spirit and unity again proving themselves inseparable. 3. r ' y- I md 1 a-M IA Lti f 1. The Freshmen cheer together et the pep rally- 2. We’ve almost accomplished the goals we charted. We have nun and worked, and I have sometimes yelled. There were times when I gave you hell. I would be a shame for us to fall, since we've worked so hard and gave our all. It’s time for us to put everything aside. The only thing to think of is this game and our pride. I think of all the things we have been through, then I think of our good times and the love I have for you. I know tonight we will meet a serious test, but after tonight we will show people who’s the best.” This poem best describes this year’s determined Girls’ Varsity team.
