Ac- tivity has been the source and basis for all future accomplishments; as the spotlight of learning is focused on past and present achievements, we realize how essential this energy of action is to the attainment of our spiritual destination. As the Arrow of 1960 briefly reviews the sum total of all our academic, social and athletic en- deavors, it will simultaneously attempt to highlight these activities. This, then, becomes the theme of the 1960 yearbook, Our School in Focus. 2 Student Council members begin their work early by directing students to their new classrooms. Eager to discover in whose homeroom they will be, Marilynn Smith, Judy Ruszkiewicz, Marge Moryc and Peggy Stump crowd around Jim Stimach and his list. Catching up on all the summer gossip, Diane Michalak captures the interest of seniors Sharon Seymour, Marcella Dynda, Marian Grzybek, Helene Pustula, Pat Wisocki (in back), Karon Pierson and Arlene Blasko as she recounts an interesting experience. And he said . . Not really! Darlene Piotrowski can't seem to have her say as Sandra Sartor and Barbara Trudell recall vaca- tion fun. Renewing old acquaintances, making new friends and comparing books make the opening day of school a new yet familiar experience. The adding machine helps Dan Rogowski review his arithmetic by totaling the prices of supplies. A week later, a familiar scene is in evidence when students talk, walk and laugh together during the noon hour. Anxious to get back into the swing of things. Sue Babel and Bobbie Greene page through the books they just bought. Vacation days are over! These Are Our PRIESTS Reverend Joseph Jacyna Reverend Leon Page Reverend Thomas Gumbleton Reverend Harold Wolf Sister Jean Marie, O.P. Principal Highlights in focus are the classes and organizations which provide the essential atmosphere of student life. Offering an opportunity to share in this experience and aiding us in pur quest for truth, Sister Jean Marie, O.P., principal, plays a major part in every activity at St. Alphonsus. In this volume of the Arrow we pay special tribute to her for making our sixth yearbook possible. It is her guidance in the selection of courses and encouragement to participate in the various or- ganizations which brings Sister Jean Marie into bright prominence in our lives. 8 William Fundaro and James Spinelle, pressured into finding the barometric pressure of the room, assist Sharon Sey- mour in solving a chemistry gas-law problem. Science Offers Opportunities For Analysis, Investigation Students of general science Suzanne Harland, Paul Brege, and Glenn Korzyn demonstrate a process of generating hydrogen by adding magnesium to boiling water. Converting book knowledge into practical use by experimentation in the chemistry laboratory, John Cavanaugh, Don Pocock and Frank Franchi distill water while Marilynn Ostrowski records the necessary data. Inquisitive visitors to micro- scopic life, Don Parcheta, Mary Fitch, and Kathy Anielak are amused by the gyrations of protozoa. Boning up on bones, Michael Phillips, John Sierota, Thomas Godard, and Thomas Gillissie, physiology students, learn about the systems of the human body. Absorbed in generating electricity. Science club officers Eileen Rodak, William Keller, Jacqueline Seasock and Lawrence Gilsdorf discover that progress is our most important product. Sister Mary Hilda, O.P. Religion, Drafting, Science II Commercial Subjects Patrick McLogan and Margaret Moryc are be- ginning to realize that bookkeeping adds up to tedious work in spite of the easier adding machine method. What would we do without our office secre- tary? Miss Genevieve McGreevy, who has given volunteer service for the past six years, fulfills the position well. Develop Office Techniques Sister Mary Mercita, O.P. Religion, Commercial Preparing for their future in the business world, second year typists Marian Grzybek, and Marsha Kuryla strive to accurately follow the directions of Marilynn Smith, Jeanine Deagen, Mary Quaglia and Barbara Colquhoun. In the Typing I class, Lynn Reminder, Noreen Morgan and Eugene Balawajder, well accustomed to changing ribbons, are oblivious to the combined efforts of Colette Hunt and Bernice Rygiel. Business club members Charlotte Zaleski, Marcella Dynda, Joyce Straty- chuk, Arlene Blasko, Joanne Misuda and Theresa Jordan learn correct filing procedures from Mr. Charles McDonald, manager of the Manufactures National Bank in Dearborn. Sister Alice Anne, O.P. Religion, Art, Mathematics Proof By Precision Marks Sister Thomas Cecile, O.P. Religion, Science, Mathematics The perplexity of expression is due to the complexity of the fractions that Richard Ramboff and Wayne Worosz are reducing. Ann Tambeau and Roy DeFrain ponder over another difficult problem. Joseph Hall struggles to answer a challenging Algebra I problem posed by chairman Ken Baidas as Alex Ratke, Patricia Owen and Loretta Wieczorek curiously await the solution. Pencil in mouth, Gloria Nowak seeks advice from Shiela McCleer on a complicated Senior Math problem. Absorbed in their work, Mar- garet Stump, Carol Diaz, Patricia Liskiewicz (forward), and Thomas Regan seem to be progressing smoothly. Progress in Math Classes An architectural scale model is examined for intricate details by Drafting II students Carl Yarkosky, Jim Martz, Bob Scoda, and Charles Theobald. In the Drafting I class. Bill Tarnacki and Leonard Uchanski discuss a techni- cal point while other students, Eugene Quinlan, Dennis Vondrak, Ron Smith, and Tom Martz proceed undisturbed. Plane geometry students Marilyn Mack, Carol Rossow, Maribeth Ma- guire and Donald Jankowski prove that right angles are formed when a straight line perpendicular to a plane intersects it. Members of the Writers' club Kathy Horger, Ron Cyprus, Ed Dorrington, Rachel Belanger, Kathy Anielak and Marilynn Ostrowski interpret pictures to develop creative writing. In the last stages of preparing a news- paper, Veronica Straus checks the final draft which Patricia Kennedy and Daniel Rogowski will print. Patricia Kenny and Kristine Kukla balance the financial end of the business. Social Studies Vitalize Current Events Far away places with strange sounding names are calling Dolores Johnston, Sally Nolan, Jeanine Deagen, Carol Van Oast and Barbara Colquhoun as Ronald Ward blows up the world in the American history class. The spirit of sportsmanship arising from the image of athletics is essential to mental and moral stamina; students' characters are incomplete without it. Its significant promineno? is focused in the intimate connection between the athlete and team; the team and student body. The athlete is an important organ of the team; his enthusiast? participation, coupled with his enjoyment in the sport of his choice, makes him a well balanced athlete. At St. Alphonsus, a sportsmanlike spirit is evident in the universal crying with the losers, cheering with the winners, and eagerly anticipating the next sports event. 34 St. Alphonsus defenders, Janssen and G. The highspot of the homecoming football game was at half-time when captain Dave Sabo, presented roses to queen Sue Babel. The exciting game was played at Fordson field following a colorful parade with a police escort. Special events in the school year provide a means of developing the social life of the student. The gaily organized class dances, the quiet beauty of the senior prom, the impromptu pep meetings anticipating the grandeur of our home- coming, and the seriousness of a carefully prepared symposium—all of these enliven sociability at St. Alphonsus. 44 Proms, Assemblies, Plays Characterize Social Events Father Wolf, athletic director, with the help of Bobbie Greene, crowns Sue Babel 1959 Homecoming Queen. Future Nurses prepare refreshments for their fellow FNC members from Rosary and Sacred Heart high schools and guest speakers Sister Rene and Sister Christopher, Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor. Bishop Zaleski set a precedent at St. Alphonsus when representatives from various Catholic Colleges addressed and inter- viewed upperclassmen. The speakers were Miss Kathlene Monahan, clinical instructor at the Providence School of Nursing; Sister M. Amadeus, I.H.M., Dean of Marygrove College; Sister Robert Louise, O.P., English instructor at Siena Heights Col- lege; Bishop Zaleski; Daniel Bieniek, president of the senior class, chairman; Mr. Richard Sheridan, director of public rela- tions, Madonna College; Mr. William Hoban, director of public relations. University of Detroit; Miss Connie Robson, president of junior nurses, St. Joseph School of Nursing; Reverend Peter Swan, C.S.B., vice-president and registrar of Assumption University of Windsor. Immediately following the college day program, students crowded around speakers to chat informally about their future. Just two weeks old in high school, enthusiastic freshmen welcomed their parents at the annual Freshman Night program with singing, refreshments and specially designed skits. Teachers were introduced and the ninth graders officially took their places as full fledged underclassmen. It has been said that the life of a school is equal to the life of its students. The focal point of their activity expands under the zest, the life and the backbone of those attending. School spirit, that indefinable something, is a vital part of every- one at St. Alphonsus, from the lowliest freshman to the most dignified senior. The big moments and the small, all have been captured to some degree in these pages. 50 Meet The Freshmen Paul Plante President Karen Rojek Vice-President Kathryn Lloyd Secretary Lawrence Batozynski Following a visit to the Municipal Court, these seniors re-enact a scene for the benefit of the class. Marsha Kuryla is sworn in by judge Thomas O'Reilly, while James Stimach records the minutes. Norbert Topolewski, Tom O'Reilly and Jim Spinelle discuss college plans with Father Swan from Assumption University. 79 The first step to that coveted cap and gown is being measured. Marion Grzybek and Tom O'Reilly are already visualizing themselves as dignified seniors. Feeling important and dignified, senior girls wear their caps and gowns for the first time. The occasion is the solemn Mass commemorating the opening of National Youth Week. Senior boys also make their cap and gown debut as they walk slowly to their front reserved places for the National Youth Week opening Mass. 80 The ring ceremony was solemn and meaningful when Bishop Zaleski blessed the seniors' rings and placed them on awaiting fingers. Distinguished guests at the head table of the senior-sophomore breakfast were Bishop Zaleski seated with Coach David Kline at his right and Miss McGreevy and Mrs. Pierson at his left. Class officers James Potoczak (far left), Michael Fras, Daniel Bieniek, Susan Babel (at Mrs. Pierson's left), Marsha Kuryla and Diane Kendziora also occupied places of honor. Not as solemn, but as eagerly anticipated in the senior year is the ring day breakfast. The seniors are traditionally given the breakfast by the sophomores. 81 r r Cap and gown investiture! Seniors are impressed with the honor of the ceremony and the responsibility that they are beginning to feel as a part of senior year. Senior Activities Continued Graduation—the dream of dreams come true. With heads lifted high, we are well aware that four years of happy memories and friendships will never be forgotten. CONGRATULATIONS, GRADUATE! The day you receive your diploma for a job well done will soon be here. May we, at Michigan Consolidated Gas, join with family and friends in wishing you continued success and happiness. LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER- ELECTRICALLY Are you coming back for more education? Getting a job? Establishing a home? What’s all this got to do with electricity? Just this: Whatever the future brings you, electricity will be there to help. For right now we are entering a whole new era of electric living. The home you start will be easier to take care of, more fun to live in, with help from electric appliances. Complete electric home heating, practical and convenient, is growing every day. Your job will be smoother, too, with electrically operated equipment and an increasing array of electronic devices. Even your education benefits from continuing research in many fields related to electricity. One day, you personally may help to create new and better ways to do things electrically. So no matter who you are, where you are or what you’re doing, your future will continue to be brighter, your life will be lighter through electricity.
