My dear Graduates, From your earliest days at St. Alphonsus, you have been trained in mind, in heart and will to defend that which is right and true. In a spiritual, intellectual and physical manner, you have been pre- pared to serve your God, your country and your fellowmen. You have been given a philosophy of life that should enable you to map out your life according to the Christi ike pattern, to possess a sense of your own great dignity as a member of the mystical body of Christ, and to keep your eyes focused on your eternal goal. . .God. Always remember the words of Christ, MI am the Vine, you are the branches. No branch can really live apart from the vine, neither can you live unless united to the Vine. You depend on Christ for life and He depends on you for fruitful living. Have great devotion to our Blessed Mother every day of your life, especially by the recitation of her rosary. During this centennial year of her apparitions at Lourdes, may she fashion you into the image of her Divine Son so that some day you will hear the words of Christ, Enter into the joys of the Lord. My sincere congratulations to you on your graduation day and to your good parents who have made many sacrifices for your Christian education. God bless you. Sincerely in St. Dominic, y tMAAJ -7 .O.f . Our Principal

Foreword VERITAS, the theme which the Senior Class of 1958 has selected for its year- book, is one which is rich in meaning and tradition. Its history begins in 1216, the year then the Holy See approved the formation of the Dominican Order. It was an age much like our own, and St. Dominic sought to illuminate the minds of his contemporaries with truth in order to bring them to a knowledge and love of God, Who is All Truth. To accomplish this, he placed two ideals before his followers: the motto, Veritas, which they would cherish forevermore as the ensign of the Order, and the virtue of detachment which they would acquire by maintaining purity of heart and mind, and by their voluntary practice of penance. When the Dominican escutcheon came into being, it was only natural that these two ideals would emblazon the shield. Thus fortified, the followers of St. Dominic became spiritual dynamos, generating the Word of God until they had charged the hearts of their listeners. Today their spirit lives on in the students of St. Alphonsus High School who are nurtured by Apostles of the Order. From our teachers, we the Senior Class of 1958, take the Dominican torch of truth in one hand and the shield of the Order in the other as we go forth to do and dare sacred and noble things for His sake.
