D R A G 0 N IA N Page Thirty three BASKETBALL fCo'1t1nued from pa e thirty one J Rhlnehart vsas high for Poca In a few days the Red Dragons ,journeyed to Charleston to meet the Mountaln Llons in a return game St Albans after defeating Poca felt that they could give the Mountain Llons a real battle but to everybody s surprlse the locals couldn t hold the Lions and received a very bad beat1ng Gumm agaln led the Charleston corlng with Singleton g1v1ng h1m a helpmg hand Tulloh kept the score from being much larger St Albans next went to Hurrlcane where 1n the first half things looked pretty bad for the Red Dragons Hurricane seemed to be very strong on their floor and gave the Dragons a hard battle In the second half St Albans pulled away to a safe lead and the outcome was never in doubt Lander and Jones were best for St Albans W1th Leadman taking honois for the Red Skins Ju t a few days later the locals played host to the Pt Pleasant B1g Blacks Th1S game turned out to be the roughest contest seen on the local floor St Albans led most of the flrst half but du1 mg the second half the lead changed hands many tlmes Pt Pleasant finally won out by a one point margin January 22 the Red Dragons crossed the river to engage the N1tro Wlldcats They returned home with a one point v1ctory gained ln an over time perlod Next the boys went to South Charleston to take on the highly touted Black Eagles In the flrst half the Red Dragons played South Charleston to a standstlll but could not keep up the good work 1n the second South Char leston won by a large score but not Wlthout a hard battle Friday seemed to be bad luck for the Red Dragons because when playlng at East Bank the boys had a large lead at the half but lost in the end Hornby led the scorlng for East Bank with Cox leading the Red Dragons St Albans returned to their own floor to meet Clenden1n one of the best teams 1n the state With a much taller team than the Red Dragon the Big Reds quickly ran up the score and was never in danger St Albans played a good game but it was no use they were outclassed Our old arch rival Dunbar came down to see us February 4 and was sent back home beaten St Albans led most of the way but the Bull Dogs were coming up fast when the game ended St Albans won but only with a two polnt margm With the coming of February 8 the squad went to Pt Pleasant to try and get revenge for the defeat handed them by the B1g Blacks some weeks before Pt Pleasant dommated most of the flrst period and was leading at the half St Albans got started in the sec ond half and pulled up to w1th1n f1V6 pomts. ST ALBANS HIGH SCHOOL fCont1nued from page fourl to the faculty among them a new basketball coach Many assemblies were held durlng the year Talks were given on guldance crime the damage done by alcohol and many othei useful subgects One of the most entertaln 1ng ass mbhes was held by Rev Ralph E Johnson who sang popular songs and gave lmpersonatlcns Looklng back ove1 all the school years since the school s founding one can see that It has progressed 1 long long way Jones played good ball for St Albans wh1le Adkms was high for Pt Pleasant February 11 saw N1tro coming over to play the Red Dragons Nitro was 1n high hopes of a v1ctory as they had held St Albans to a one point uctory before Nitro gave the locals a hard battle but fell before the sharp shootlng of the back court boys After a hard four day practice sesslon the whole team was confident that they could l1ck South Charleston In the first quarter the Black Eagles ran up a large score but St Albans was only seven polnts behmd when the last perlod began Here South Charles ton turned on the heat and left the Dragons 1n the lurch February 18 the Hurricane Redskms came but the Dragons were not to be stopped th1S t1me as they had been a few days before Al though the Hurricane lads played well they could not keep up with the h1gh stepping Dragons St Albans took to the road two days later to play Clenden1n As the Big Reds were badly off form they d1d not rmg up a very large score St Albans played fa1r ball but could not compete with the B1g Reds Clen denln was leading 33 14 at the end Returning home after the Clenden1n de feat the Red Dragons took on Poca St Al bans for the first time 1n the season played better than average ball Poca was com pletely out classed and flnally lost 30 8 As all thlngs must end the regular playlng season came to an end when the Red Dragons met Dunbar 1n a return game Dunbar with SCIDIO leading the attacks gave the Dragons thelr nlnth set back of the season Several days later a practlce game was held with the alumnl in which the R d Dragons won by two points St Albans journeyed to N1tro Friday March 11 and gave the Buffalo s five a sound beatlng 1n their first sectlonal game Satur day evenlng the Red Dragons met the N1tro cagers and won by a one point margln but over confidence must have caught up with the boys as they lost out Saturday to Hurricane 44 40 This ends the Red Dragons basket ball season May they do better next year I L . g . - u n 1 , I 1 S . . Page Thlrty two D R A G ON IAN FOOTBALL iCont1nu d from lage thlrtyl rlved the team was full of pep and ready to go Early 1n the fray St Albans recovered a fumble and proceeded to mark up a score Before the half was up another score was added to the flrst In the last half the Red sklns became stubborn and allowed only one touchdown to be made Blrdsell McCorm1ck was outstandmg and the whole team played good ball Nest week was home comlng week and It was to be chmaxed by a game between the Red D agons and the Black Eagles from South Charleston Parades and speeches were scl eduled for Frlday but ra1n broke up most of these affalrs Game day dawned clear but the raln of the proceed1ng day caused the f1eld to be 1n a very poor cond1 t1on Slnce the Black Lagles had not won from the Red D1 agons for three years every body was pred1ct1ng a v1ctory But age ex perlence and b1awn was to much for the Red Dragons and they suffered thelr thlrd de feat 12 0 Henson and Morecraft were the best players fo1 South Charleston and Tulloh was best for St Albans In thls game Tulloh recelved a badly wrenched leg wh1ch bothered h1m the remalnder of the season When October 30 rolled around all the boys were afrald that they weren t gomg to get to go to Po1nt Pleasant because of the hlgh wa ter but when Saturday came around Coaches Alford and Smlth w1th about 17 boys went to the Ohlo r1ver town and took them by storm Thc local lads outplayed the Blg Blacks 1n all perxods and came out Wlth a 34 0 margln Coach Alford treated the boys to a plate lunch afte1 the game A satlsfled and stuffed squad of boys arrlved back 1n town about 8 30 Saturdav mght Murray and Cyrus were out standmg for St Albans No out standlng players could be pxcked from the B1g Blacks but the whole squad showed remarkable Splrlt and was game to the last mmute After three days practlce the boys Were ready to meet the Poca Dots on November 3 Poca was small as they had lost most of the1r 1936 37 squad by graduat1on When Poca plays St Albans they always seem to cl1ck and this tlme was no exceptlon Although St Albans pushed across four touchdowns two were called back because of penalt1es In th1s game M1tchell broke loose on the ten yard l1ne and out ran the whole Poca team for a touchdown wh1ch w as called back Thls was the flrst game 1n wh1ch M1tchell really showed h1s back f1eld talent As the season was nearlng 1ts end we met our old arch rlval the Clendenln B1g Reds St Albans st1ll smartmg from the 6 0 defeat wh1ch Clendemn handed them the year be fore was rarlng to go Clendenln surprlsed JUNIOR CLASS 1Cont1nued from pag twenty three? December 10 A N1ckelodeon fL1I'H1Sl'19d 1a7z for truckln and the Blg Apple Refreshments were COOk18S and punch Duung the hrst SIX weeks of the second semester the Junior class was allowed to sell candy Norma Hlldebrand was ln charge o the candy case whlle Josephme Osborne sold candy and chewing gum at the basketball and football games The proceeds were used for th Jun1or Senlor Receptlon O 1 February 7 1938 the class met at Mrs Chapl1n s home room to cuss and discuss the most lmportant event ot the year the Jun1or Senlor Receptlonl Commlttees finally selected by Vlax Tulloh were as follows gen eral the three adv1sors and class OHICQTS re freshment commltt e Clvdene Ryder cha11 man and France Brooks decoratlon w1th Blllle Jean Calnes and V1rg1l Roberts Norma Hlldebrand Ruby Taylor George Jones Jean Johnson Helen Mldklf Mary Sue Wh1te Cameron Halstead Charles Beckett Randall Bxrd Bob Rogers Jerry McCorm1ck and James Young 3SS1St3HtS The receptlon was held May 14 1n the hlgh school gy mnaslum everybody by scor1ng f1rst and then playlng tlght ball for the rest ot the half When St Albans scored two qulck touchdowns a VIC tory was pract1cally a c1nch but Clenden1n came b ck to score another marker and Wm the game by a one po1nt margln At last came the end of the schedule and It was welcomed by coaches and boys allke Spencer a much larger school than ours was to furmsh the oppos1t1on The day of the game was very cold and snowy most of the tlme Spencer started out early and made two polnts on a safety Before the Red Drag ons could get organlzed the Yellow Jackets scored 4 touchdown and led by e1ght polnts St Albans threatened tw1ce But the at tack alv ays seemed to fall short No out standlng player could be plcked from the Red Dragons After the last game the unlforms were put away ID moth balls t1ll another season rolls around But the act1v1t1es d1d not stop w1th the end of the season The Band Mothers treated the boys to a swell banquet a few weeks later and an assembly was held 1n thelr Honor Captaln Murray Stevens and Cyrus recelved sweaters for their work whlle the rest of the squad got letters The Red Drag ons w11l lose four mlghty f1ne players by graduat on 1n the persons of Murray Stev ens Cyrus and Stanley Murray and Stevens were backs whlle Cyrus and Stanley were llnemen These men w1ll be hard to replace next year. . 6 T' .
