Black History Month Saginaw High Students were involved with the celebration of Black History Month in February. They enjoyed cultural presentations and lectures from various groups. Poets Preston Wilcox and Don L. Lee read their works and spoke to students about pride and the black experience. The Kuumba Actors presented ‘Five on the Black Hand Side dealing with the trials of a black family. Of course the Saginaw High Soul Choir performed for the student body as well as for the PTSA and all the elementary schools. ‘The Black Man and His Music gave a fabulous account of black perfor- mers and black music which is so much a part of the black heritage. Few will forget the lessons we learned about our past and of our present Also as part of the observation Saginaw High Students competed in the areas of Forensics, Art and a Black History Exam. Savings bonds and trophies were awarded to the winners. ABOVE: Larry McCray does an impersonation of B.B. King. TOP RIGHT: Preston Wilcox talks to the Afro-American club. This year Mr. Timothy Rogers took over the | | music program at Saginaw High. An immediate | | improvement in the program was noticable mu when the marching Trojan Band was back on the B field again. Small in numbers, and not actually |} marching the band did play at halftime for the | last four home games as well as for some of the | basketball games. All hopes this trend will continue and expand next year to make the | Trojans a respected marching unit as it once | was. | The band also played for assemblies and | | provided musical accompaniment. It looks as if BN the bands at SHS will become something you | would be proud to join. | Stage Band members are:(FRONT) Woodrow Blakely, Edgar Jackson, Cleo Haulcy, | Darryl Frierson, Leroy Culpepper, Kalvin Deaner. (SECOND) Channing Washington, Johnny Blakely, Dan Schmidt, Darren Dixon. (STANDING) Eddie Cameron, Leon Gilliam, ۱ Todd Labadie, Rodney Parker, Michael E. Steward, Kenny R. Jones, Kelvin McFadden, | Terry Morris. Darrell Speowl, Glen Bender.
