In her court, and no less lovely were First Runner-up Alice Alford, Second Runner-up Peggy Lawrence, Third Runner-up Rosie Coronado, and Fourth Runner-up Trudy Simmet. New this year was a presentation ceremony to the parents and the community held Tuesday nite before Homecoming. The competition was tough and a total of 27 girls tried for the coveted honor. The Senior class chose the five finalists and the final voting was done by the entire student body. The court was escorted by chosen members of the ’76 football squad. They were Anthony Williams, escorting Ms. Haynes; Vernon Donalds, escorting Ms. Alford; LaRosa Brown, escorting Ms. Lawrence; Mario Garcia, escorting Ms. Coronado; and Eddie Huerta, escorting Ms. Simmet. Both the Coronation and the Homecoming parade were formal affairs for the court. TOP RIGHT: Fourth runner up Trudy Simmet and her escort Eddie Huerta. A pep rally was held the day of the game and Queen Gillie and her court of Saginaw High's loveliest were presented along with the football team. Helen of Troy and her court were crowned at the Homecoming football game that evening. Also at the half- time ceremonies, a large parade included floats from each class, a queen's float, and also floats from many clubs and local organizations. Not dampening the spirit of the occassion, the Trojan fans took the loss to Flint Central in stride. The evening was capped by a dance also in honor of the Queen and her lovely court. GIMME AN A snm Boa 2-23 P WHAT DOES IT SPELL TROJANS! Fashions FASHIONS, FASHIONS, Fashions st Saginaw High had it all together. They ranged from the «Goucho look, to three piece suits for young ladies to blue jeans with T-shirts sporting the popular phrase “Foxy Lady. For young men most at SHS wore printed shirts with dress slacks and the popular short leather jackets. THree piece suits, pin striped for the Gangster look also were the rage when it called for dressing up. Hats were also in and added to the “Bogart” style. Hair styles ranged from the afro and the “Slick” to the latest called the “Nova” cut. Corn Rows also were popular. Jewelry was also big for both sexes with array of necklaces and braclets and ear rings. Newest was the double ear ring craze which takes double piercing. Over all students at SHS could out distance any school in the fashion race of 1977. |a SN LEFT: J.D. Brown wears the typical casual combination for young men at SHS. Soul Choir Sings The famous Saginaw High Soul Choir had another fabulous year which included a successful tour of the East Coast, the cutting of their second record album, as well as many perfor- mances at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Mrs. Marian McKinnie was again delighted with the fine group of singers she had the pleasure to work with this past year. The group was selected for many honors and was in great demand. None of the members of the Soul Choir will ever forget the great experience of being part of one of Saginaw High's most suc- cessful organizations. Black History Month Saginaw High Students were involved with the celebration of Black History Month in February. They enjoyed cultural presentations and lectures from various groups. Poets Preston Wilcox and Don L. Lee read their works and spoke to students about pride and the black experience. The Kuumba Actors presented ‘Five on the Black Hand Side dealing with the trials of a black family. Of course the Saginaw High Soul Choir performed for the student body as well as for the PTSA and all the elementary schools. ‘The Black Man and His Music gave a fabulous account of black perfor- mers and black music which is so much a part of the black heritage. Few will forget the lessons we learned about our past and of our present Also as part of the observation Saginaw High Students competed in the areas of Forensics, Art and a Black History Exam. Averill Career Opportunity Center, better known as the COC, added six new classes this year to go along with the many vocational skill areas it already of- fered. Among some of these classes were Aeronautics, Travel Industry Assistant, Used Car Contitioning, Motor Cycle Repair, Automobile Interiors and Radio Television. Students from Saginaw High rode buses twice a day to attend classes in the center either in the morning or in the afternoon. The emphasis was on learning skills which could be turned into jobs after graduation. Want to be a pilot? . .. How about an auto mechanic?? or a broadcaster?? The COC may be for you. All areas were expanded including the number of pages, number of issues and the amount of advertising. Under the fine leadership of Editor-in-chief, Larry Owens, the TIMES did very well at the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association's annual conference at CMU. Owens was picked as one of the top 24 high school journalists in the state adding to his many accomplishments. Anthony Joseph and Anthony Chambers exerted great amounts of time and energy along with an involved staff to make the TIMES a worthy publication for SHS. Who will every forget those nights and Saturdays and even Sundays slaving over the copy and production under the direction of adviser Mr. Patsy Procuro. The TIMES also participated in many social and school projects, ending the year with the first annual TIMES banquet. Happy because the book is back before they leave SHS unlike the previous year. Also the 1977 Aurora, although slightly smaller than last year, has added color to its pages. It was a trying year for the staff and adviser, Mr. Patsy Procuro, but somehow it all got finished and it will be for the student body to judge. Losing their first six contest- s, the varsity suffered a big loss 71-0 against top ranked Flint South- western. Give up?? NEVER!! The squad held together beating Bay City Western, barely losing to Highland Park (undefeated) 6-0, an then lost a tough one to crosstown rival Arthur Hill. The final loss was questionable as the Hillites won in overtime 20-14 on a judgement call. Regardless of the record the Trojans showed poise, maturity and the talent to be a winner. The gains the team made throughout the season were unquestionable. Outstanding for the Trojans were Harold Johnson and Anthony. Williams named All-County. Johnson was later mentioned All- American. Charlie Smith and Clarence West were both outstanding backs according to coach Burton. “I saw a group of young men keeping together as a unit, he said,‘‘devoting strong relationships which will carry over next season.” Lamont Darden, Ricky Webb, Coach Floyd Burton, Coach Bob Gore. JV Football Even though the JV Footballers were 1-8 last season Coach Floyd Burton feels many of the players will become outstanding varsity players next season. “All of these young men were outstanding, said Coach Burton, ‘They played to the best of their abilities.and experience. There wasn’t much doubt who would be best in the Valley as the little Trojans swept all opponents except one. Led by captain Regina Grady, this year’s standouts were Liz Vance, Deidra Williams and Debra West followed by all the other girls who helped SHS toa more than respectable 19-1 season. With talent to spare like that the 1977 Varsity squad should be dyno-mite! 71 Ze Mm DI: T Wrestling This year's Varsity Wrestling squad showed tremen- dous improvement as they muscled their way to a 4-6 season, the best in recent years. This is another example of how SHS improved in individual areas. Some standouts included Harold Johnson and Bobby Martin, who went to the state meet. It was also a team effort. The grapplers shut out Buena Vista and defeated crosstown rival Arthur Hill, which hasn't exactly hap- pened a lot lately. The Trojans didn't fair too well in the valley posting a fifth but even this was an improvement. With only two seniors lost next year they should have no trouble com- piling a winning season. Coach Gore feels the team could have gotten a few breaks and that would have been all it took. Lone senior Ken Valley will be the only non returning player which should give the team depth next season. Outstanding this season was Rick Smith who scored 14 goals and had 9 assists for the year at his defensive position. After losing the big center Paul Roby our cagers relied more on the outside shooting. Kenny Land fill the center position well. William Bond was a standout ball handler who ran the teams play and kept everyone cool during the action. Coach Marshall Thomas has nothing but praise for the efforts of these fine young men who are soon to replace the improve the varsity champions. That is how a tradition is formed. Late in the season Charlie Brown was brought up to the varsity ending a fine JayVee career and gaining valuable experience. Volleyball 1, à oo Under the coaching of Ms. Mary Walker the Saginaw High Volleyball team managed a fair 7-7 season, lacking in height but not in desire. Their record dosen't show the games ‚which were lost by only two or three points nor does it show the work and dedication the team put in to every practice and every game. All the girls were outstanding, said Coach Walker, “Especially Joanne Goodman, Maria Lozada and Donna Beemon. Coach Walker also pointed that the team had a problem of playing as a unit and that when they did they usually came out on the winning end. Volleyball Inexperience hampered the JV squad all year as the team lacked poise when things went wrong. Many times losing the first game took the fight out of the team. This took its toll as the season ended with only four wins against ten losses. First year Coach Gail Beemon said,“ This was a learning season. We did well considering our inexperience and we will get better.” This year's outstanding players, according to coach Beemon, were Priscilla Plamer and Kathleen Lunnie although the rest of the squad improved as the season unfolded. Dr. Wilson Smith replaced Mr. Gene Nuckolls as principal, Mr. Charles McNair replaced Dr. Larry Paige as assistant principal of academics, and Mr. James Sweeting joined Mr. Cliff Davis and Mr. Ray Gallegos, assistants in charge of pupil personel. Dr. Smith stressed community involvement and academic upgrading as his two primary goals. Dr. Smith was very visible in the halls creating a friendly atmosphere between himself and students who responded. He provided the leadership our faculty needed to become more involved. Along with the help of Mr. Sweeting many clubs were revived or created this year and SO sales were at a five year high. Mr. McNair began a new system of recording absences which has helped counselors and teachers both. All three assistant principals have made enormous efforts in solving the skipping and absenteeism problems which plague SHS as so many high schools are today. It is a year like other points in your life which will affect you more than you know. As you again and again look through the pages of this book -looking at the faces and the events which took place you will recall many sights and sounds at SHS and in your world. The year began with a new principal, Dr. Wilson Smith, and before it was half over you had a new President, Jimmy Carter. Smith's administration stressed academic achievement and involvement. More students than in recent years, perhaps you, got involved in clubs and activities. Chess, bowling, camping, travel, Science Fiction, Pep, La Familia, Student Council, Intermural Basketball, the TIMES, the AURORA, the Soul Choir, the Marching Band, the Drama Club. The Plays and the newspapers, the performances, the games, the meetings, the plans , the ideals -all were part of that year. Jimmy Carter's administration stressed employment which was at 14 per cent in some places and really high for blacks and young people. Jobs were not easy to find and you had to be skilled to be secured of one. Along with those memories will be remembering yourself standing up to give the cast of “Godspell” a standing ovation for the best assembly of the year. Or perhaps you will recalled sitting down to take those college entrance exams and giving yourself a small but releaving ovation for doing so well. - Remember the Arthur Hill football game. There we were tied at the end of regulation. Us, the team who lost to Southwestern 71-0. But none of that mattered the day the Pal ref had to “rob” us in order for AH to win. Wait 'til next year!! and afterwards the dances. The “Bump” and the “Hustle” were cool and the were bad and how do you like my three piece pinstripe and my brim, or my gaucho skirtpants with these sharp high boots?? Swaying and gyrating to Stevie Wonder, and Parliament and Rolls Royce, and watching Soul Train every Saturday. Screaming and yelling for those great Trojan Cagers as they marched to the state class A crown, cheering your fellow teamates on at the pool or at the links -LINKS?? Those sore throats and aching hands after each game. Being PROUD to be a TROJAN winning with the team... . Who is the Prime Minister of England? What is the coefficient of the number 65?? who did write “Lost Paradise??? Where is Kenya located?? What is sediment?? How do you do a back handspring?? Facts, Facts, Facts and more facts. Was it all worth it?? Soon YOU will know. But will you ever miss getting the report done for Mr. Pratt's class, or getting the TIMES out on time?? or the Algrbra test you didn't study for?? All the paper, lead and ink which passed through you hands. These were all a part of you life in class at SHS. You DID go to class didn't you???? And finally the PROM -that dress cost a fortune! What $35 for one night and the pants don't fit?? Staying out all night long. WOW, I can really go into that bar! And remember Maria, Diane, Cheryl or Joyce?? or Delvin, Robert, Mario, or Anthony?? I thought it would last for ever.... Will I ever forget the things I did at SHS?? I just might but I sure don't want to. That's why I collected these pictures and autographs and this book for the REMEMBERING. .... PISOS f j eN ام‎ € ; | M ۰ AN al D PCM EN DA x ar Ae a X e a = S5 ai B d x on ak D P = = Te | C AMA TE.
