The Saginaw High Varsity Baseball Team had a rough season this year as they could only 2 wins in 21 outings. some of the outstanding players on the team this year were Bill Ugartechea, Jeff Miller, Clar- ence West and Emerson Baty. Some of the improvment of players are Dan Nash and Karl Williams. The reason for the bad season was the inexperi- ence of the players. And some of the strengths of the team was the good defense and smart base running. Coach Earl Jaramillo said, We should have a pretty good team next year because we are only losing three seniors. The Junior Varsity Team came out with a 0 and 18. Baseball ТОР ROW--Karl Williams, Bill Ugartechea, Clarence West, Coach Earl Jaramillo, Jeff Miller, Warren Williams. Awards Each year Saginaw High School hosts an Awards Assembly for each class (senior, junior, sophmore) which was held last year in May. A few of the major awards given to seniors are the Cooper Memorial Scholar- ship, the Alumni Memorial Scholarship, and the BEO Grant. some of the other awards are the Alpha Data Kappa Scholarship, the Helen Joan Tur- pin Scholarship, and the American Business Women's Association Scholarship. Baseball Saginaw High's 1975 Baseball team by far was a better team their 6-14 won-loss record indicated of them. With outstanding players Jim Schmidt, Rick Cirilo, Jeff Miller, and Warren Тар Williams the Trojans only weaknesses seemed to be pitching and inexperience. We weren't to strong on pitching last year, and inex- perience took its toll at several positions, Coach Hunt said, In the future the Trojan nine can look forward to the re- turning of a few talented sophomores and some depth in the outfield, Joining the baseball staff as new head coach will be Mr. Jarimillo. But still in all pitching remains the big ques- tion mark. vec EET I ғ У у v ere 1975 Baseball Team--FRONT RO W: Rick Cirilo, Jeff Miller, Clarence West, Warren Wil- а the liams, Tony Lenoir, Dale Brothers, Karl Williams, Rick Schneider, Jim Schmidt. Under the direction of first year coach Mr. Dan Knapp, the Trojan net- ter's future looks bright. Having new courts developed both here (SHS) and at Webber, we hope to be more competitive in the future, coach Knapp said. Returning from last years squad are promising players Tom Carpen- ter, Mario Olivarez, and Ken Valley whose talents should help the Trojans bid for an improvement on last year. ТтасК It has been tradition і Saginaw High School history to have an outstanding Track Team. Last years team exemplified the true meaning of a quality team. Led by Danny Abraham, Ricky Flowers, Ron Darden, and Henry McClung, the Tro- jans were favored to win the Class A State Title but plagued by injuries the Trojans settled for fourth place. Seven out of thirteen school records were shattered last year by the speedy Trojans. The 880 yard relay team of Ricky Flowers, Reggie Carter, Danny Abraham, and Henry McClung finished first in the state with a time of 1:28. 1 Earlier in the season the same foursome recorded a 1:27. 0 which is currently the second fast- est time in the nation. Seniors Ronald Darden and Ricky Flowers will be counted upon heavily in the sprints this year while Charlie Smith and Anthony Williams should be strong in the field events. —— и Willie Abby IIT Lenora Abraham Audrey M, Abraitis Augustine Adams Christopher L. With loads of talented players up from last years city champion Junior Varsity team the young Trojas looked as if they might be a contender as they shut out their first two opponents. Although the Trojans were victorious, their most obvious dis- advantage was the lack of an explosive of- fensive threat. Without a running game, the Trojans had to rely on Senior Robert Kelly to make many outstanding receptions on which he either scored or set the Tro- jans within good field position. Defense was the key all year long. With All City standout middle guard Bernard Rogers leading the team in solo tackles and pro- viding a keen sense for reading plays, the Trojan defense seemed almost impeccable. Then disaster struck! Even though the Tro- jans were oriented towards defense they seemed less than mediocre when starting quarterback Jeff Miller ( All City ) was in- jured . The Trojans were ill-struck for a new field general. Reserve quarterbacks Byron Pridgeon and Roy Buck held their ground but neither could turn a losing team around for the Trojans. Head Coach of four years, Mr. Don Junt, resigned because of the Trojans poor showing in the past. еее Varsity Football--FRONT ROW: J. Scott, C. Smith, А. Williams, E. Batey, L. Brown, C. Hardaway, J. Т е Saginaw High School Jun- ior Varsity Football team worked very hard during the season even though their 1 win 6 losses and 2 ties make it seem otherwise. Coach Thomas feels the reason for this was because there wasn't enough time to learn the basic fundamentals plus put the individ- ual players progress in to use as a team. Coach Thomas hopes that he can put these all together next year to make SHS be recognized as a good football school. Also the best of luck to Coach Thomas and the J. V. Team. S. and this year was no exception as the Trojan golfers won only one match by forfeit. One reason for lack of success was that there is not enough student in- terest in the sport. Mark Schmidt was the most consistent golfer all year long as he averaged a 92 score for 18 holes. Mr. Bruce Wells, coach of the golf team, stated that next season's golf team should be improved as eight prospective golfers have shown interest in joining the golf team. Girls Basketball | There could not have been any better fol- lowing of the Trojan spirit footsteps as dis- played by the J. V. girls basketball teams performance this season. The record was 10 and 2. Ms. Starks and Mr. Adams both agree that the team not only played well together but was aware of each others mistakes which helped them to develop certain patterns of responsive assistance. The team was well organized which enab- led them to overpower most of the competit- ion they faced. Along with performances around the city they also put on several good programs for their high school peers and administrators. These included the Christmas Sh ow, Pep Assemblies and Black History week Program. Forty-four members of the choir presented an outstanding ten-day tour to cities across the country. They performed at the Ontario Science Center, Toronto Canada, Music Educators National Convention, Atlantic City, New Jersey, the all famed Kenneady Center, Washington D.C, and many other cities including New York, Cleveland and Philedephia. Т е Soul Choir also cut an album, Feb. 7, 1976 produced by the Mark Co. of Detroit. The album was released March Ist. entitled А Contemporery Gospel Ехреге се . On February 10, the Soul Choir and Drama Class put on an excellent perfor- mance for SHS. The Soul Choir sang his- toric songs and they were coordinated by the drama class who did dramatic skits. Gillie Haynes read three dramatic poems on blacks that she created herself. Basketball At Saginaw High School basketball has always been the major sport and a winning tradition. This year was no exception as the Trojans went all the way to the state final Class A matchup with a tall Detroit Catholic Central team. All-Stater Mile Prince was in a classic battle against the Trojan's unani- mous All-State pick Paul Roby. Prince got the upperhand with 24 points while Roby hit for 21, favoring a severly injured ankle. With a healthy Roby the Trojans could have easily won the title. The Trojans cagers finished the season with a 20-7 won lost record. Their record does not indicate their performance as Tro- jans dropped many of these contests by one or two points. All of this year's team should be commended for their outstanding play and next season should be the year when the Trojans take it all. Kenny Land, Ivory Jones. J.V. Basketball This past 1975-76 basketball season the Junior Varsity Basketball team finished the season with a 18-2 won-lost record. Some of the outstanding players were Mike Brooker who was the leading rebounder, David Law- rence, the leading scorer, Tony Stevenson, the top assist man, Karl Williams, the top defensive player and Anthony Bell seemed to play his best ball games when he played again- st the tough teams. This years team had lots of rebounding, scorer, ball handlers and overall quickness. The basketball teams weakness would have been the failure to react and adjust to situation such as changing de- fenses, zone defense in particular. Overall the team did an excellent job not only in team record, but also in enthusiasm, team spirit and togetherness. The school and the team had all of these. Next year we have some good ball players coming to Saginaw High as usual, however there will probably be a height problem, Coach Thomas replied. Цина 11 ТКОЈАМ5 1 | _ а ес ATS Volleyball | The Saginaw High Varsity Volleyball squad had a tough season this year as they could only pull out six wins in 15 outings. Coach Walker said the only reason for such a poor season was that the girls wouldn't play as a team. Ms. Walker said, As long as all the girls contributed to the team, they are all outstanding players. Some of the weaknesses of the team replied Ms. Walker was that they don't play as a team and they won't back each other up on the courts. There was one thing that Ms. Walk- er was pleased about the team was that they are excellent blockers. Volleyball The Junior Varsity Volleyball squad ended with a successful season of 12 wins and two losses. Coach Walker was very pleased with the team this year and she said, the team should be very good next year because students from Junior High Schools are learning power volleyball and this will help the team. Ms. Walker feels all her girls are outstanding players, because they all contributed to the team. The Wrestling Team had a rough season this year to the fact that the other teams seem- ed to have more experience than the Тто- jans, but they stuck it out. Т е Wrestling Team should be quite well next year as all of the team is coming back except two or three seniors that are gradua- ting, said Coach Perry. Ihave no favorites on the team, because I feel that all of my wrestlers are outstanding, Coach Perry replied. Our weakness are the lack of ex- perience and we hope to do, better next year, replied a member of the team. THIS PAGE--ABOVE; Trojan wrestler on a take down. TOP RIGHT; Two wrestlers squaring off. НосКеу Saginaw High's Hockey Team suffered through another season with nothing but frustration as they finished with an 0-19 record, but with more experience the infant Trojans might be contenders. The Trojans showed alot of improvement as the year progressed but unfortunately they were still less than mediocre. Next years team will consist of mostly juniors and their year experience should make the difference for a turn around season. Coach Terry LaJeunesse feels that next year should prove interesting. Next season should be a very interesting year. Many of this year's players will be returning from this season and they have learned alot about hockey in a short time. Their knowledge and leadership will help the new players of next season.' said coach LaJeunesse. Swimming | The Saginaw High Boys Swim же Team had а rough season this year as they could only pull out two wins in 16 outtings. Coach Stark wouldn't give any outstanding swimmers names because she felt that all her swimmers were out- standing. Coach Starks hopes more people will come out for swimming so the swim team will be successful in the years to come. The girls swim team also had a rough season as they couldn't pull out a win. Coach Starks really couldn't say who her oustanding swimmers were because there were only four swimmers and they were all outstanding. Coach Starks hopes that more swimmers will come out so that the swim team would be more successful.
