This building, known as Union School, was located on the present site of Hoyt School until it was destroyed by fire in 1871. Central Union School, which was opened thirteen years after the construction of Union School, stood on the corner of La- peer and Park streets. This high school was honored to hold the first commencement exercises for an east side school. On June 30, 1871, the first diplomas were issued to the graduating class. Six girls! Each grad- uate delivered a speech, with Hattie Goldie giving the valedictory. Others who completed their schooling at Central Union were Ara Avery, Ardie Merrill, Gertie Safford, Ita Mitler, and Hattie Woodruff. Five others have been considered to be in the 771 class but died before graduation. They were Mrs. Marion Goldie Button, Mary Woodruff, Lucy Eddy, Carrie Bliss, and Samuel Brooks. Central Union served the east side students till it was torn down in 1924. The next high school to be constructed was Old Main. It was situated on the corner of Warren and Mil- lard from 1881 till 1965 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1905, the Manual Training Building, which stands opposite the former site of “Old Main, was opened for classes. This building provided business and industry skills for the students. The Manual Training Building now serves as the Adult Education Center. 1954 was a rewarding year for the faculty, students, and graduates of Saginaw High. The building which is in use today was opened after sixteen years of persuading the voters that a new school was needed. In Septem- ber of 1954, the students and faculty moved in the present Saginaw High building. Saginaw High has had a history full of achievements and continues to strive toward its goal of serving the students in the best possible way.
