THIS YEAR WE HONOR A member of the teachers’ Twenty- five Year Club, Miss Hetherington was one of twelve teachers honored at a special luncheon last year. Mrs. Edna Gambill, guidance teacher, pins a rose on her on that occasion. To the 1800 students enrolled here, Saginaw Hish means more than just the scholastic drud- gery usually connected with school. It means companion- Ship, education, and extra. Curricular activities! In the classroom, in the community, and in the school, Miss Mary Eliza- beth Hetherington has distinguished herself and brought honor to our school. It is with understandable pride that we dedicate this year- book to Saginaw’s only woman fire- man, whose fire and enthusiasm for her profession cannot be extingui- shed. Her influence and example have éiven students the determina- tion.to scale new hesehts of aca- demic accomplishment and it us typical that she originated the distinguished alumnus ceremony to inspire today’s students with the accomplishments of these alumni. She came to Saginaw Hiéh in 1930 as a, Journalism instructor, By 1954 she had been asked to speak five times at the Columbia Scholastic Press convention in New York, and received the Gold Key award for Service in journalism. Düring the war, she acted as an auxiliary fireman in the city fire department, and as an instructor in air raid precautions. She was ap- pointed Michigan Chief ol the wo: men's section and was cited for honors in civilian defense volun- teer wos kann, New York Cty. In 1960, Miss Hetherinéton was one of 1d? out ok 8000 to be chosen for a six week tour of graduate study under a scholarship. grant at the University of London. She tied for first place, in a history writing contest given by Scholastic maga- zane in L94: Miss Hetherington has established a Delta College scholarship. in honor of her grandmother, Mrs. Mary E. Hetherington. The first recipient was Peter Dobulis, a 1961 graduate. She was given charge of the first accelerated English classes in 1959 and she is in charge of the Trojan Honor Board. We humbly dedicate this book to Miss Mary Elizabeth Hetherington teacher - citizen.
