Mrs. Edna Gambill, guidance teacher, pins a rose on her on that occasion. Miss Mary Elizabeth Hetherington After the annual Quill and Scroll banquet, Miss Hetherington enjoys the company of Mr. Glen Boisson- eault, editor of The Saginaw News, and Mr. Ward Tibbet, principal. In the classroom, in the community, and in the school, Miss Mary Eliza- beth Hetherington has distinguished herself and brought honor to our school. It is with understandable pride that we dedicate this year- book to Saginaw’s only woman fire- man, whose fire and enthusiasm for her profession cannot be extingui- shed. Her influence and example have éiven students the determina- tion.to scale new hesehts of aca- demic accomplishment and it us typical that she originated the distinguished alumnus ceremony to inspire today’s students with the accomplishments of these alumni. She came to Saginaw Hiéh in 1930 as a, Journalism instructor, By 1954 she had been asked to speak five times at the Columbia Scholastic Press convention in New York, and received the Gold Key award for Service in journalism. Düring the war, she acted as an auxiliary fireman in the city fire department, and as an instructor in air raid precautions. She was ap- pointed Michigan Chief ol the wo: men's section and was cited for honors in civilian defense volun- teer wos kann, New York Cty. In 1960, Miss Hetherinéton was one of 1d? out ok 8000 to be chosen for a six week tour of graduate study under a scholarship. grant at the University of London. She tied for first place, in a history writing contest given by Scholastic maga- zane in L94: Miss Hetherington has established a Delta College scholarship. in honor of her grandmother, Mrs. Mary E. Hetherington. The first recipient was Peter Dobulis, a 1961 graduate. She was given charge of the first accelerated English classes in 1959 and she is in charge of the Trojan Honor Board. STUDENTS WHO LEARN TO SAVE WILL BECOME PROSPEROUS ADULTS Young people, like these SAGINAW HIGH students, above, who begin saving regularly at SECOND NATIONAL, discover even in their youth that a little money saved each week will pyramid into amounts that will pay for the costly things they want later in life. At first, their savings may pay for things as small as some new clothes. .As they grow older, their savings might make possible a college educa- tion or the down payment on a new car. No matter what the specific goal might be, the important fact to remem- ber is that young people who learn to save will be the prosperous adults of tomorrow. Why not build for YOUR future by opening a SAVINGS ACCOUNT at SECOND NATIONAL? There's a branch in YOUR neighborhood.
