Following his graduation he began, as a reporter on the Saginaw Courier-Herald, a career which eventually led him to be managing editor of the Saginaw News. In 1928 he left the News to become editor of the Flint journal, a position he held until his death. Mr. Gorman never left Saginaw High, however, for in 1928 he gave his name to the Michael Gorman chapter of Quill and Scroll, the local chapter of the national journalism society at Saginaw High. Again in 1939 his Alma Mater honored him by naming Michael Gorman its first Distinguished Alumnus. Qn November 20, 1958, the students of Saginaw High School gathered in the school auditorium for a solemn memorial assembly in honor of a former Distinguished Alumnus, Michael A. Gorman. In memory of the service which Mr. Gorman rendered to this school, Miss Mary Elizabeth Hetherington, who directed the program, announced that the Lantern Service Award would be re-activated and re-named the Michael A. Gorman Service Award. ADMINISTRATION I 9-it , X W x MMS Mx Mita PM R .Rx I U fl? A X f v J 5 J' X. 5 .D W 7 0 X C I X x East Side vs. West Side! In the early days of Saginaw the rivalry between the east and west side schools was a rivalry between two separate towns. Professor john Estabrook was elected Principal of East Saginaw Schools in September of 1886, his title being changed to Superintendent in january, 1867. At that time the East and West Saginaw administrations were separate functions. March, 1928, brought Chester F. Miller to Saginaw, and with his efforts the two administra- tions became one. Of the newly unified organization, Miller was first Superintendent. During the years that he held that position, many major advances took place: new schools, new curriculum additions, and greater aid to the youth of Sagin- aw. The administration played its most important part for us in the attainment of the new Saginaw Highg campaigning for the vote that would assure East Side students of a new high school with swimming pool. um: J hmQu Q.
