FRESHMAN CLASS HISTORY Our class of seventy-three Freshmen entered Safford High School with high spirits on September l, 1939. We, like all Freshmen, were due to be initiated on entering high school: consequently, in a meeting held with the Sophomores, we were given definite orders, The boys were commanded to Wear girls' shorts and bandana waists. The girls had to wear their skirts upside down, their blouses backward, and their hair in five braids. We were compelled to bow to all Sophomores, we were not allowed to drink at a fountain when a Sophomore was standing near: and we had to enter the school building by the northeast door. We had loads of fun Cmaybe some embarrassmentj but we are looking forward to the day when we give the orders! We feel that we did well in choosing our class officers: Polly Northcutt, president: Benny Greenhaw, vice-president: Florence Foote, secretary: Marvin Allred, treasurer: and Madeline Talley, representative. We selected Miss Handley and Miss Krebs as our class sponsors. The second semester Mrs. Fees took Miss Krebs' place as one of our sponsors. Hoping to get revenge, we accepted the Sophomore challenge to a tug-of- war. We didn't succeed in pulling them into the canal but we gave them tough competition: if we didn't, the rope did. Our first real fun was on our picnic to Crandall's Ranch. Everyone brought his own lunch and had a swell time. Our chaperons were Miss Krebs and Mr. Tate. We chose Madeline Talley to represent the Freshman Class in the competi- tion for Ocotillo Queen. Later in the year we enjoyed ourselves at the Friday afternoon dances given for our benefit. We went on a picnic again in the spring when the beautiful weather made us long for a good time. Well, We certainly had one. Our Freshman year has been very exciting and we wish to thank Miss Hand- ley, Miss Krebs, and Mrs. Fees for helping us in our class activities. The Ocotillo Page thirty-six
