He then entered Flagstaff Teachers' College. graduating with his A.B. de- gree, and the University of Arizona, where he received his Master's degree. While at the university. he was a member of Phi Delta Kappa. Mr. Nelson was married in February, 1919, to Miss Sadie Goodman. Although the supervision of Salford High School keeps him pretty busy. Mr. Nelson takes a prominent part in civic activities, being a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Education Association, Arizona State Board of Edu- cation, Executive Committee of Arizona. and on the Board of Directors of the Rotary Club in Safford. In 1935 he became superintendent here at Safford High School, and he still thinks the kids are all okeydoke. ASSISTANT COACH MITCHELL Born in Parawan, Utah, we find an outstanding citizen personified in J. H. Mitchell. He is a member of the Rotary Club in Safford, and a member of the State Teachers' Association. For his early schooling Mr. Mitchell looks back to Cedar City, Utah. From Cedar City we find him next going to the Utah State Agriculture College where he received his B.S. degree. He attended three years summer session at the University of Arizona. Salt Lake City was the scene of his marriage in l923 to Miss Bertrude Seeley. After graduation from Utah State, We find him as basketball coach of Saf- ford High School. His second year here elevated him to the position of principal and he is as yet the same loyal and most outstanding figure of Salford High School. We held our first meeting September 8, at 3:30 o'clock. The dates on the Calendar were set for the events of the first smester. Meetings were held every two weeks at which various steps were taken for the good of the high school. The high spot in the year's activities. and the one most looked forward to by our officers. was the Student Gflicers Convention which was held at Prescott. The officers from Thatcher High School accompanied us and as our chaperon we chose Miss Morgan. We were entertained with a joint luncheon and busif ness meeting which lasted for five hours. Improvements and experiments in high school government were discussed and Yuma was decided upon as next year's convention city. We came away with many ideas and memories of a good time. We started by registering a team which consisted of Marjorie Fuller, captain: Lenna Phegley, co-captain: Sarah Mae Clifford, manager: Spencer Hoopes, representative: and for our coach, Mr. Motes. The first play of the big game was the tug-of-war with which the other side set us back a few yards, but we didn't let this discourage us. We took time out for Christmas and coming out of the huddle we tri-ed all the traditional plays. We ended the first quarter feeling proud of ourselves. We began the second quarter by changing the team's officers to Lenna Phegley, captain: Lavon Blake, co-captain: Sarah Mae Clifford, manager: Mar- jorie Fuller, representative: we chose Mr. Gieszl for our coach. Now we felt confident that we could hold our own against the opposing side. Numerous plays were used during this quarter. The initiation play, used by the other side in the first quarter, was now our big ground gainer. We also gained a lot of ground with the tug-of-war. We were just getting started now, and the best plays were to come in the last two quarters of the game. The first quarter in the last half was ready to start, and we felt it was to be the biggest and most exciting quarter. We began it by changing oflicers again. Chosen were Marjorie Fuller, captain: Norman Bingham, co-captain: Sarah Mae Clifford, manager: Spencer Morris, representative: and for our coach we chose Mr. Furr. We took time out to have a class dance which was held in the Auditorium, and came back ready to settle down and really work. Immediately after Christmas plans for the Junior Prom were started. Under the coaching of Mr. Furr and Graham French, and with the assistance of a large number of Junior players, the hall was beautifully decorated with the theme Rhythm of the Snowflakes. Taking the ball on May 6, we scored again with the Junior-Senior Ban- quet. The Western motif was cleverly carried out, and the food was dee-lish. Page ni fren-4The Ocotilln After this strenuous attack we decided to take time out for a trip to the Hot Springs where a good time was had by all!! For our last play we gathered all of our strength to put forth the final effort of a Graduation Dance in honor of the departing Seniors. At last we had reached the final quarter of the game and we started out with a bang, our first important play bting the Senior Frolic. The carnival idea was carried out with balloons, confetti, and much gayety. We followed this by the Senior play which was za great success. Senior Sneak Day was our final thrust into the opposition's territory. It was then that we fumbled and our hope of a trip to Carlsbad Caverns was lost: however, soon after that we recovered the ball just in time to make it a trip to Stockton Pass instead. We left Wednesday morning, April 3, when all the Seniors loaded into the bus and were taken to the historic pass. The climax of the year's activities was the last play where we took the ball when they used the Junior-Senior Banquet. In the last minutes of the game we made our best showing. Because we had fought long and hard to win this game we were given our diplomas. The whistle blows! The game is over! We, the team of 1940, leave the field happy in our many victories but sad that this is the last of our high school days! The Ocotillo-Page twenty CLASS WILL We, the Senior Class of 1940, wishing to keep our individual and VERY important traits in S. H. S., do hereby pronounce this to be our last will and testament. I, Curtis Ligon, leave my Sing Sing haircut and animal imitations, along with my practical jokes, to Carl Schroeder. I, Tommy Blake. will my motor-bike and socialistic viewpoints to anyone who can convince Mr. Motes he's wrong. Page twenty-three-The Ocotillo CLASS PROPHECY I went to the great fortune teller, Allah Hokum, the other day and. being curious about the old Senior Class of 1940, I asked him to peer into his crystal ball and see what he could see. This is what the crystal ball revealed. Spencer Morris and Graham French did so Well selling hot dogs at the Senior Frolic that they decided to make it their life's work. They have taken over Ted's and Kal's Driv-in and use as their motto, Indigestion won't happen here. Their efficient waitress is Lorraine Richardson, running in and out between the cars collecting tips and flirting with the good looking men. Ernest Taylor has risen from the masses and is now one of the country's leading capitalists. He started his blazing career as a mere garter salesman and is now holding the nation's socks up with a piece of elastic. His janitor and oflice boy is Wallac.e Hitt, who dreams of the day far off when he will be a garter magnet like his boss. The Vernon Jensen-Margie Taylor romance has finally gone on the rocks. fThey are married now.j Vernon has recently been elected president of the Woman Hater Club of Arizona, while Margie is filing suit for divorce in Reno. Jean Crandall is having a hard time driving trucks for uno who. In her spare time she is teaching Paul Jr. how to be a soda jerker and tap dance just like his mother. Nick Gardia has just lately become the proud owner of the valley's most popular night spot, Whoopie Hall. As his entertainers we find Teresa Guitterez and Alfrel Figueroa jitter-bugging all over the place. Terrell Blake is in Hollywood serving behind the scenes as a' makeup expert. He gives the actresses that delicate blush which he possesses from telling all of those none too nice jokes in study hall. He has just made up Leona Holitza, who has taken Ann Sheridan's place as the new Oomph girl of America. Betty Baker has had so much experience in editing the annual that she was appointed editor-in-chief of the True Confession magazine. The principal writer on her staff is Sarah Mae Clifford who has made up some real good confessions. This is no time for obituaries, but Lavon Blake, the tennis champion, was just bumped off in Chicago by Playboy Irving Plotkin while in one of his famous rages. The great criminal lawyer, Brainstorm Hugh Morris. saved Playboy Plotkin from hanging by the neck until dead on the plea of insanity. The Barney girls, Velate and Norma, are running a boarding house near Solomonville. Their star boarder is Norman Johnston, who is now a success- ful Fuller Brush salesman. Romance seems to be developing between him and Dorothy Layton, who still lives on her father's dairy farm. The U1-ufilla--Pugie I Il'I'llf!j'f0 u r Ordell Larson has been delving in politics. He has just been elected mayor of San Jose, fast-growing enchilada manufacturing center. Chief street cleaner and dog catcher of the fair city is Roy Jacobson. Marjorie Puller has shocked us all and is advocating back to nature in one of New York's classiest night spots. Her latest admirer is Gigolo Arthur Todd, king of the gin bottle. Spencer Hoopes has given up the show business in Safford and has reformed. He is on a mission in the South Sea Islands and seems to be enjoying himself. Caroline Van Order and Rex Rapier are a famous dance team in Holly- wood. Their latest dance creation was the Boogie Woogie Floogien in which Caroline was a picture of grace and Rex exceeded all other dance artists by standing on his head for ten minutes. Cherrill Brown has given up her books and is giving lectures in better places on How to keep your girlish figure. Her able assistant is Ruby Foote who teaches the weaker sex the art of ju-jitsu. Betty Anderson has become a famous ventriloquist. Sitting on her lap is the famous king of the wooden heads, Fred Thomas. Lucille Nash is teaching a school out in Lone Star and is fast becoming an old maid because she can't decide which one of the Tidwell twins to marry. J. W. Steurmer has given up his Coca-Cola truck and has sought the he man life of Tarzan in Africa. Going along to protect him from catching cold is his wife, Marsha Mae Root. Dora Kirkham has organized an all-woman baseball team who just re- cently won the world's championship from the New York Yankees. Her star players are Wilma Curry, Julia Nulton, and Myrtle Hancock. Curtis Ligon and Herbert Skinner, two of the world's greatest scientists, have disputed Darwin's theory on the evolution of men. After years of research they declare that, judging from the human specimens they have seen, men sprang from something worse than monkeys. Helen Wackerbarth has forsaken her tennis racket for the more exciting life of a night club. She now slaps that bass for Ted Harris' We Like lt Hot band, while hubby Arthur Carrell cooks the meals and works on the WPA. Melvin Powell has climbed high. Starting out as a mere paper boy, he is now the star reporter of the Arizona Republic in Phoenix. One of the more unfortunate paper boys, Tommy Blake, still resides in Safford as a confirmed bachelor and the Government and Sociology teacher of Salford High School. Clarice Maloy and Mary Jean Kennedy are in the local jail at present on charge of espionage. The two unfortunate girls were down in Mr. Mitchell's chemistry room working on a very dangerous experiment when Clarice mis- took a stick of dynamite for a piece of chalk. The Safford High School will have to be rebuilt. Pngflwulfy-1i1'0-TI111 Oz-olillo Gordon Scarlett is running a barber shop in Pima. His slogan is Shave and throat cut, six bits. As his assistant we find Kay DeSpain, senior chief scalper and toupe arranger. Both boys seem happy in their butchery. Merna Layton, now a fat, buxom opera star, is making a concert tour of the Canary Islands. Della Rogers is her accompanist. Eugene Holfield and Earl Price are running a Whiskey Cure Hospital out in Cactus at present. Their nurse is that pretty red head, Reva McBride. One of their last clients was Gilbert Whveelock, better known as the Fire Crief of Lizard's Bump. He is following in his father's footsteps. Mildred Smith is the new charm expert and dean of women of the Uni- versity of Arizona. She teaches the girls all the secrets of getting a man and holding him. Norman Bingham has become one of Safford's leading business men. He owns a chain of pool halls all the way from Ft. Thomas to San Jose. His wife, the former Lenna Phegley, is the leader of the elite in Safford's society. Myron Kisselburg is the leader of a communistic group and is definitely un- American in his ideas. He carries his traditional soap box and time bomb, trav- eling from town to town in his old jalopy. Alene Johns, who has been to Reno five times since her first marriage, is now the wife of Harold Merrill, owner of the Valley Bakery. She seems quite satisfied because he gives her all the doughnuts she wants to eat. Ruth Richmond. the great geometry student, is designing a road from Saf- ford to Ft. Thomas so her boy frienl can get down to see her quicker and more often. Her chief engineer is Ivanelle Lance who was fired from the Five and Ten recently for flirting with the customers. Sam Foote, by the way, is still in college as almost a full-fledged Sophomore. He declares he will keep on plugging along until he finds a beautiful girl worthy of his affections, and having one million dollars. How correct the prophecies of the crystal ball will be, only time can tell. The Ocatilla-Page twenty-sin: I 1 M 11 , - I .,. , .-' 1 ' - , . . . :L I ,gn-. -' info, ,. ., - .-: ,. ,5 ...lf . The following officers were elected: Philip Mitchell. president: Marion Johnson, vice-president, Florence Mitchell, secretary and treasurer: and Melvin Burrell, class representative. In November, the first party of the year was held in the form of a hayrack ride. After the usual eats, songs were sung around the campnre. Later in the year, a class party was held in the auditorium. Basketball, vol- leyball, and other games were played. Light refreshments were served. Early in January plans were started for the Junior Prom held on February 23. Beth Pace was chosen chairman: and Reid Woodford, business manager. South of the Border was selected as the theme. lt was well carried out with a Spanish mission in the background and a solid ceiling of brightly colored balloons. -The dance was one of the most colorful events of the season. On March 20, a picnic was held at Red Knolls. Wieners, buns, and all the accessories were taken along. A very tired and dirty group of students re- turned home after exploring all the caves to be found. The Junior-Senior Banquet came next on the calendar. Stars was chosen as the theme, and the auditorium was nicely decorated. An enjoyable time was had by all who attended. After the graduation exercises, a dance was given in honor of the departing Seniors. The class Wishes to express its appreciation for the help and advice given by our sponsors. They are as follows: president, Lester Owens: vice-president, Arthur West: secretary and treasurer, Mary Lance: representative, Harold Gietz: and as our class sponsors we chose Miss Morgan and Mr. Williams. Soon after the beginning of the school term, we initiated the Freshies into high school. Remembering the embarrassing moments we had in our Freshman year, we decided to make it really tough on this group coming in. The girls were told to wear their skirts upside down and their blouses back- wards. The boys had to wear girls' shorts and bandanas. They also had to bow to the Sophomore students every time they were told to. A few weeks later we held the annual tug-of-war with the Freshman boys. It was a hard fight, but after breaking the rope several times, we won the event. During the year we gave two assembly programs, They consisted of musical numbers, readings, and a play. Everyone seemed to enjoy the programs and we enjoyed giving them. During the first semester we had two picnics. The lirst picnic was held at Crandall's Ranch, The other was a hayrack ride to Cactus Flat. We took our lunches and the class furnished refreshments on both of these occasions. We had a grand time on both of these picnics and are looking forward to the good times again next year. I We wish to thank Miss Morgan and Mr. Williams for all of the help and assistance they have given us during the year. We are all looking forward to a successful and busy year as Juniors next fall. We, like all Freshmen, were due to be initiated on entering high school: consequently, in a meeting held with the Sophomores, we were given definite orders, The boys were commanded to Wear girls' shorts and bandana waists. The girls had to wear their skirts upside down, their blouses backward, and their hair in five braids. We were compelled to bow to all Sophomores, we were not allowed to drink at a fountain when a Sophomore was standing near: and we had to enter the school building by the northeast door. We had loads of fun Cmaybe some embarrassmentj but we are looking forward to the day when we give the orders! We feel that we did well in choosing our class officers: Polly Northcutt, president: Benny Greenhaw, vice-president: Florence Foote, secretary: Marvin Allred, treasurer: and Madeline Talley, representative. We selected Miss Handley and Miss Krebs as our class sponsors. The second semester Mrs. Fees took Miss Krebs' place as one of our sponsors. Hoping to get revenge, we accepted the Sophomore challenge to a tug-of- war. We didn't succeed in pulling them into the canal but we gave them tough competition: if we didn't, the rope did. Our first real fun was on our picnic to Crandall's Ranch. Everyone brought his own lunch and had a swell time. Our chaperons were Miss Krebs and Mr. Tate. We chose Madeline Talley to represent the Freshman Class in the competi- tion for Ocotillo Queen. Later in the year we enjoyed ourselves at the Friday afternoon dances given for our benefit. We went on a picnic again in the spring when the beautiful weather made us long for a good time. Well, We certainly had one. Our Freshman year has been very exciting and we wish to thank Miss Hand- ley, Miss Krebs, and Mrs. Fees for helping us in our class activities. The Ocotillo Page thirty-six IW! Co-captain FOOTBALL Four years ago a new coach took over at Safford High. Many looked askance at him, wondering what he could do. Was this the man to put the Bulldogs on top, or was he just another coach who would be turned off after one year? These questions have been fully answered by the record hung up by Coach Bill Gieszl in his four years at Safford. During this time Coach Gieszl's teams have won 19 games, tied 3, and lost 10. They have won the Eastern Conference championship twice and tied for it once. Does not a record like this speak for itself of the coaching abilities of this man? But, no matter how great a coach is, he will not be a success Without able field generals. The 1938 team selected two men to captain them throughout the following year. These co-captains were Roy Jacobson and Arthur Carrell. To them was given the all-important task of calling all the plays for their team. How well they filled their positions is also shown by the record. Another important member of the team who is not given much credit for his work is the manager. Seldom does his name appear before the public but his role in keeping the team in shape is just as important as any of the others. For the last two years the boys have come to depend on and to love Arthur Sonny West who took over Danny Baker's job. Page thirty-'nine-The Ocotillo Top row-John Meredith. Une of the major events which may or may not have inspired the players this year was the changing of the school colors. Regardless of which it may have been. this item will go down as one of the most significant events in the school's history. Rising above all early season predictions, the Bulldogs started the year off right by going through a tough sevenagame grid schedule with 6 wins and l defeat to win the Eastern Conference football crown. Thr Ovoiillo-Page forty eight V MUSIC A great many have taken interest in the music department this year, which under the leadership of Mr. Furr has been a great success. The thirteen differ- ent organizations entered in the annual music contest were the following: The mixed glee which had the largest number with seventy-two on the roll. This is also an acapella choir. The group had one big feed and party, following a Christmas caroling excursion. Next in line, according to number, is a sixty-five member girls' glee club. Their dresses for the contest were of blue and white checked gingham. Officers for the year were: Margie Taylor, president, and Merna Layton, vice-president. The boys' glee had twenty-eight on the roll with Spencer Morris, president, and Bill Rhoads, vice-president. It sounds like there are a lot more than twenty- eight, and their music is grand. The two choruses offered entertainment in assemblies and in P.-T. A. pro- grams. Their music was always enjoyed greatly. The mixed quartet included Spencer Morris, Brandt Curtis, Lucille Nash and Merna Layton. Spencer Morris, Brandt Curtis, Max Bell and Ted Harris made up the boys' quartet which sang for many of the club parties, assemblies, banquets, churches, over the radio and for other organizations. The girls' trio, Merna Layton, Betty Baker. and Leva Gene Stewart, enter- tained in various places as well as the boys. The group you have seen wearing those swanky looking blue uniforms is the Safford High School Band. There were fifty-two in the Band. Some of the more advanced students from the Junior High were invited to join them, adding a greater variety of instruments. They entertained at the football games, bas- ketball games. J. C. Rodeo, over the radio, dedication of new post office, dedi- cation of Baker Stadium: marched in the parade for the stars of the'world premiere of Geronimo, and parades on special occasions. Max Bell was the captain with Fred Bingham as first lieutenant: Marjorie Fuller was second lieu- tenant and Bill Rhoads sergeant-at-arms. Leading the band were the three majorettes, Merna Layton, Vera Nell Jacobson and Joyce Baker. Safford High's orchestra had thirty members. Philip Mitchell was concert master. They played in two sessions of the P.-T. A. convention where the national P.-T. A. president was in attendance. The Brass quartet consisted of Bill Rhoads, Leo Robbins, David Bellman, and Max Bell. Those in the string quartet were Philip Mitchell, Ted Harris, Ethel Griffin and Helen Wackerbarth. In the trumpet trio was Bill Rhoads, Leo Robbins and Clarence Rage. Philip Mitchell, Helen Wackerbarth, and Marjorie made up the string trio. The clarinet trio included Beth Pace, Florence Mitchell and Helen Morris. Marjorie Fuller accompanied the glee clubs at the piano.
