STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council is the student governing body of the school. All matters of general and specific interest pertaining to school activities and functions must be passed by this organization. Among the various projects undertaken by the Student Council were those of composing a plan for the qualifications, distribution, and general utilization of academic letters, of sponsoring dances and other activities in order to raise necessary funds, and of presenting the complaints and suggestions of students to the Council for discussion. The uniformity and co-operation of the Student Council has made it one of the most valuable institutions at Saegertown High School. FIRST ROW: (L. to R.) S. Melville, adv., Mr. May, R. Canon, S. JUNIOR AND SENIOR HONOR SOCIETIES The Torch of Learning if the symbol of the Honor Societies, and this is very appropriate for scholarship is one of the most important qualities. The objective of this organization is to honor those people who have excelled in leadership, scholarship, character, and service to the school. By failing in any one of these things a member can be dropped from the organization, but the support of the participants is seldom questioned. The advisors of the French Creek Valley Society, the local chapter of the National Society are Mr. Laban Smith and Mr. William Fleming. JR. HIGH HONOR SOCIETY ROW 1: J. Marburger, M. Kubachko, D. Hl-Y The object of the Hi-Y is, to quote the club's constitution, to create, maintain, and extend throughout the home, school, and community, high standards of Christian character. Being a service organization, it does much to stimulate the interest of the completely male membership in social problems, both local and national. The activities and functions of the club are under the direction of Mr. Shorts. TRI-HI-Y The Tri-Hi-Y is the girls chapter of the Hi-Y. In many ways these clubs are very similiar in that they support the same code and strive to reach the same goal. One of its projects is donating a basket of food to a needy family each year at Christmas. The Tri-Hi-Y, under the supervision of Mrs. Strickler, has done much to further the progress of the school and community. ROW I: S. Hinkson, J. Flick, D. Curran, V. Pres. C. Free, Pres. C. The main objective of this club is to make student direction, make-up, acting familiar to the students. By the production of plays these aspects of drama are made available to the members and student body. Mrs. Bedford is advisor and her talents and leadership were greatly needed. UNITED NATIONS DELEGATION The purpose of the model United Nations is to give the participating student an opportunity to observe the procedures and to understand the many accompanying problems. By attending the meetings, and aspects of public speaking, parliamentary procedure, and diplomatic strategy combined with the association with other students, were all rewarding to the 1961-62 delegates. Mr. Darcangelo has been in charge of the Saegertown group for the last three years. Like the preceding yearly meetings, a trip to Erie will be the main event. ROW I R. Davis B. Olsen Adv. FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA The F.T.A. is a device of the teaching profession. The Saegertown chapter has four basic purposes: to interest good students in becoming teachers; to explore the teaching field; to cultivate qualities of leadership, character and scholarship; and to render service to the school and community. The agenda for this year has consisted of several money raising projects, movies, a field trip to Slippery Rock State College, several social events for the club, and a trip to Harrisburg for two of the members. COMMERCIAL CLUB As one of the members stated, the main object of the Commercial Club is to raise sufficient funds in order to finance a field trip at the end of the year. By selling candy and programs at athletic and social functions, the girls try to raise the necessary money for their trip, while at the same time, benefiting the school in general by providing these services. The school newspaper The Panther Flash is also under the jurisdiction of the Commercial Club. The newspaper is edited, printed and distributed monthly. ROW I: S. Hinkson, C. Lawrence, R. Shea, J. LIBRARY CLUB The Library Club, under the direction of the school librarian, Mrs. Margaret Adams, provides a great service to the school. The organization has done much to create a greater interest in the library itself, and in the personal reading for the students. The members, other than working in the library, offering their services when time permits, sell books and pens and bind term papers. The money obtained is used for the purchase of more books, magazines, and other reading material which are of an educational interest. The officers, along with the other members who contribute time and effort, are continually improving the library facilities of the school. F. H. A. The main purposes and goals of the Future Homemakers of America Club are: to promote a growing appreciation of satisfaction of homemaking, to encourage democracy in home and community life, and to provide wholesome individual and group recreation. Funds for the club's activities are raised by selling food and refreshments at football and basketball games. These and other services constitute their numerous activities. Mrs. Lois Allen, advisor of the F.H.A., has done much to promote interest in homemaking and to help in acquiring money for the club. The F.H.A. keeps active at state level by sending demonstrators to the State Farm Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Also our state officer, Kathy Adams, and other girls will attend a State F.H.A. Convention at Penn State in the spring. ROW 1: J. Cutshall, D. Black, P. Householder, L. Hayes, Mrs. Lois Allen, G. Gerritsen, S. Leszek, K. Adams, B. Householder. ROW 2: L. Beatty, E. Snyder, L. VARSITY S CLUB: This organization is composed of boys who have earned a varsity letter in one or more sports. It exists mainly for the purchase of awards and jackets for the present members, but it has other objectives which are of more benefit to the future club, such as, buying a movie camara and projector, and trying to begin a film library of Saegertown sports. In order to raise sufficient funds, the club sponsers the annual school fair and donkey basketball game. Advisors of the Varsity S are numerous because they consist of the coaches of every sport, being Mr. Darcangelo, Mr. Baker, Mr. Bedford, Mr. Sheakley, Mr. Keba, Mr. Hillis, and Mr. Pieffly. PROJECTION CLUB: The Projection Club is one of complete service and necessity to the school and school functions. The main reason for its existence is to teach students how to operate the audio-visual equipment which is frequently utilized in classes, clubs and social activities. Mr. May is the advisor and members seem to be acutely interested. Mac Bugbee is president, Ron Phelan V. P., and Dick Mulligan Secy-Treas. Below, ROW 1: D. Van Winkle, R. Canon, J. Their performances at Christmas and Spring Concert and at school assemblies were ones deserving commendable praise. ADVANCED SCIENCE: The reason for the organization ot an advanced science club was to try to expose the students to different fields of science such as biology and physics. By doing this, the members gain a definite perspective of their own interest in these fields and their seriousness with planning a career. In other words, the Advanced Science Club is an introduction to that vast area which lies beyond high school. The club sponsored several activities for their own intellectual benefit, the most important being a science speaker from another school and numerous projects and experiments pertaining to the discussions at hand. All of the functions were under the leadership of Mr. Hillis and Mr. Schultz, the Advanced Science Club advisors. ROW I: B. Brown, Adv. Mr. Hillis, G. Slater, R. Canon, R. Williams, E. Marceca, G. The marching band has participated in numerous parades and has won several first prizes. Entertainment at the half-time of a football game at Akron University was one of the highlights of the fall season, and, of course, their many performances at the Saegertown football games afforded much practice and enjoyment for all the band members. The concert band presented its annual Christmas Concert and Spring Concert to a considerable crowd of students and townspeople. Many favorable comments were the result of these excellent performances. Spring Training” is next on the music agenda, and everyone will be drilling furiously for the proceeding parades and performances. Saegertown indeed has a band of which to be proud. 34 Band Director: Mr. R. Pohl E-FLAT HORNS PICCOLO K. Myers, D. Twiford, M. Rabell, B. Hopper. This year, those band members who were chosen to attend District Band in Erie, Pennsylvania, were: Alan Amy, Kathy Terry, Ellen Manning, Milta Rabell, and Judy Smith. First on the program was a parade of the band and club-sponsored floats displaying the theme 'Holidays', the blue ribbon entry being the Yearbook staff's. Our lovely queen, Sandra Ridgeway, who was presented at a school assembly the previous day, reigned with her court over the parade, game, and dance. She was crowned at halftime by the football team's co-captains. Along with a bonfire, the combination of these highlights made the 1961 homecoming a memorable one. 38 Livestock Queen Chosen by the Future Homemakers of America, the 1961 Livestock Queen of the Saegertown area was Louise Hayes. She participated in the district contest in Erie and occupied second place. The school congratulates her for her representation. Horseshoe Queen Honey Bee Queen Becky Miller (right). Horseshoe Queen, and Vici Gray (above). Honey Bee Queen, complete the royal court for 1961-'62. These attractive girls represented Saegertown in a commendable way. 39 ATHLETICS i' BASEBALL fd The 1961 Panthers added another trophy to their ever increasing collection. Even though the championship was shared with Linesville, Saeger-town has been the team to beat for five consecutive years. Coached by Mr. Robert Hillis, the well-rounded squad, both offensively and defensively, displayed good sportsmanship and a determination to win. The team consisted of Ron Sheakley and Leonard Randolph as catchers, Marvin Zirkle, Chris Michaels, Duane Schlosser, Clarence Thomas, and Joel Melville as infielders, and Bob Canon, Chuck Gilmore, Joe Keefer, Ken Gerretson, Jim MeMillan, Dick Mulligan, and Rodney Briggs covering the outfield territory. The pitching staff was composed of Bob Wright, Ken Gerretsen, Chuck Gilmore, Jim Garfield, and Joel Melville, who deserves special recognition for his versatility and adeptness in this field. One of the highlights of the year was a no-hitter pitched by Joel against Cambridge. Looking ahead to the 1962 season, five lettermen will be returning. The nucleus of the pitching staff will be Bob Wright, Chuck Gilmore, and Ken Gerretsen. Everyone concerned hopes the future contests will be as successful as the past ones. Although losses were incurred, the team challenged each rival with renewed determination, and many players obtained the satisfaction of conducting themselves greatly to their advantage. Outstanding moments of both individual and team effort were evident, but most important was the season-tested Saegertown sportsmanship and school spirit. Because of this determination and improvement, the squad, coaches, and spectators will be looking forward expectantly to the 1962 football season. 45 Bob Canon BASKETBALL Joe Mulligan Chuck Rowland Coach Robert Sheakley Dick Huson Duane Schlosscr Jim Heald 46 VARSITY BASKETBALL: ROW 1: R. BASKETBALL Even though at press time the league competition had just begun, it was easy to perceive that the battle for the championship would be a thrillingly close one. The Saegertown basketball squad possessed a considerable amount of material and potential, the proper assemblence and utilization of these qualities being the final ingredient for the composition of a victorious team. A few of the individual assets were the smooth, long shots of Chuck Rowland and Bob Canon, the driving lay-ups of Jim Heald and Bob Jones, and the praise-worthy defensive plays of Bob Wright, Duane Schlosser and Dick Huson. At the same time, team work was just as important as one good player. The coaches, 47 Jr. High: ROW 1: A. Edwards, L. Cutshall, D. Miller, H. Parsons, R. Weed, L. Drake. ROW 2: J. Young, S. Melville, R. Hough, R. McCartney, M. Randolph, C. Hornstein, M. Heald, C. Mathews, Mr. Robert Smith. Mr. Sheakley and Mr. Keba, realizing this necessity, strove to take advantage of individual assets as well as the organization of a well-rounded team. With this in mind, a successful season was the teams and mentors' goal and the cheerleaders' and spectators' hope for 1961 1962. 48 TOP ROW: C. Matthews, Mr. William Pieffley, Coach, J. Simon, G. McFadden, G. Fernberg, R. Nichols. FRONT ROW: R. Mulligan, D. Trace, M. Bugbee, D. Zimmer, G. Shumaker, P. Reichel, G. Kantz, J. Mulligan, L. Clark. Although this is only Saegertown's second year of the sport of wrestling, their record is a fairly commendable one. The 1961 62 season shows three wins and seven losses, but in most of the matches, the score has been very close, a few points composing the difference. Mr. Pieffley has been the coach since the sport was introduced to the school and he feels that as time progresses, Saegertown will be proud of its wrestling squad. The comparitively new sport has acquired great popularity among the students and wrestlers. The seniors on the squad are Mac Bugbee and Robert Canon. Most of these boys will earn awards in this field for the 1961 62 season. 49 Sandy Ridgeway 50 The 1961 -'62 cheerleaders deserve to be commended for their excellent display of these qualities and the performance of their duties. The Varsity Cheerleaders were awarded a trophy for the best squad out of four competitors at the Mercer Christmas Tournament. Much of the approval can well be extended to the coach Mrs. Carr, who, through time and effort has helped shape a fine cheerleading squad. Jr. Varsity Cheerleaders Judy Hans, Kathy Doyle, Rhonda Marstellar, Mary McMunn, Shirley Hinkson, Kathy Adams CHEERLEADERS The purpose of each of the three squads of cheerleaders, Jr. High, Junior Varsity, and Varsity, is to promote enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and school spirit among the student body. Supporting the basketball and football teams is a very important factor in their success. The impression a cheerleader conveys reflects upon the entire school; they are school representatives at home and away. 51 JUNIOR HIGH CHEERLEADERS C. Davies, C. Smock, D. Perry, P. Simon, M. Basketball, tumbling, and volleyball are only a few of the sports available to junior and senior high school girls. The exciting games and activities are excellent motivation for that teamwork and co-operation necessary in all aspects of life. Beside the regular Monday night meetings, the association challenges other G. A. A. teams from neighboring schools. Mrs. Kenneth Carr contributes much time and effort by arranging games and matches, officiating, and supplying the deserving participants with awards and letters at the end of the year. GYM TEAM: J.
