Bier i To the Yearbook Staff and Pupils: The school year of 1958-59 finds the world full of scientific advances so complicated and society full of uncertainties about the future. However, we should not lose sight that man has made progress through the ages and will continue to make progress as long as he believes and continues to believe in God. Because of all scientific advancement, the school has become the leading institution to help mankind over his hurdles. Education today may be classified as Education for survival: in a world full of economic, political, and scientific changes. Pupils of today must of necessity be given the opportunities to learn in an ever changing world. Society has to up grade man and his education in order to meet the challenges of todays living and tomorrows happiness. 4 Carl J. Maurana Principal Secretary: Georgia Wetsell Principal: Carl J. These are the students, also, who make the school known to the public in athletic events and scholastic achievements. These are the more adult of the student body and are the ones who set the example for the underclassmen to follow. Never in the history of football at Saegertown have three coaches had more reason to smile! The toothsome grins in the picture above reflect the satisfaction of having worked with the boys who composed the winning combination of the Class B football league in Crawford County this year. And the picture to the right bears the trophy that is testimony of our undefeated team. Coveted by all the other league teams, it shall rest in it's honored spot among the other trophies in our showcase which were won by teams of years gone by. Though it becomes a part of the display already there, it will always stand out among the rest as representing the first undefeated football team that has ever played at Saegertown High School. D. Mention 40 s4C£-St z 4 Just as the Panthers from Saegertown dominated the County football league, so too did the Saegertown teams players dominate the annual County all-star poll. Chosen for 1st team honors were as follows: Bill Canon, Quarterback, Mike Keefer, end, Wayne Jobe, back, Jeff Bergholtz, guard, and Ron Schlosser, tackle. In addition to these players, three were chosen for second team honors. Shown on the opposite page are: Don Stewart, end, Chuck Mays, center, and Jim Brown, back. The only player gaining honorable mention votes this year was another Panther back, Dick Zirkle. 41 The first undefeated team in the history of the school . . . that’s the glory of the 1958-59 Panther football squad, guided by the very able coach Merle Darcangelo and his two assistants, Melvin Bennett, line coach, and Richard Baker, jayvee coach. The Panthers led off with a hard fought battle with Mercer which ended in a 7-7 deadlock. This game later proved to be the one to mar a perfect season for the big, black cats. Youngsville loomed ahead the following week and the Panthers, led by quarterback Bill Canon, broke into the winning column by defeating them 20-13. These two games completed the pre-league warm-up games, and sparked with the taste of victory over Youngsville, the Panthers rolled into the league games by defeating Townville 33-12 at the latters camp. It was a field day for Canon, Jobe, Brown, and Zirkle as they all tallied for the Panther team. The bench was 42 cleared at this game as some of the newer members of the squad tasted their first varsity league play. With one league victory under their belts, the Cats moved into the Randolph Rockets proving grounds and proved to be their undoing. Sparked here by the impressive blocking of Mike Keefer and the tackling of Dick Zirkle, the panther crew trimmed the Rockets by a score of 34-0. With these games safely tucked away, the Panthers returned to their own cage and prepared to entertain what was to be the highlight game of the 58-59 season, the homecoming game witn tne Conneaut Valley Indians. It took the Panthers just two quarters to get under motion to defeat the upset-minded Indians. After an unsuccessful first half, the team finally started clicking, and the halfback running of Dick Zirkle and the quarterbacking of Bill Canon started to cause the un-horsing of many of 43 the Indians. Bill Canon and Jim Brown moved up the field to score on short gainers late in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Instrumental in setting up these plays was the flashy, hip-swinging running of Wayne Jobe, who was held to no scoring in this game. After the turf contest was ended, the score stood at 14-0, in favor of the Panthers. With the height of the season over, one spunky squad stood between the Saegertown Cats and County League Class B championship . . . the Blue Devils from Cambridge Springs. The concern over winning this game was squelched quickly after the opening kick-off as Bill Canon raced 72 yards for the first tally to put the Panthers .nto a lead that was never lost or threatened. While the Blue Devils were completely outclassed, a couple of heartbreaking runs by Panther squadmen, Don Stewart and Jim Brown, were called back from what would have been touchdowns. The final score at the game's end stood at 39-9, and left the Panthers undisputed Champions of Crawford County. Our last game was a non-league game with Conneaut Valley, but it served as an anti-climax to a successful season. The Cats once again took to the road and met the Indians in their wigwam. They proceeded then to scalp them to the tune of 24-0. This was not accomplished, however, before the Panther squad had three touchdowns called back for infractions of rules. It might be remembered by some that this makes a total of twelve touchdowns that have been called back on this gridiron in the past three years, a hard-luck field if there ever was one. In spite of these call-backs, the Panthers have emerged the victors. While all the laurels seem to go to the backfield players on teams such as this one, it must be remembered that without such linemen as Don Stewart, Mike Keefer, (ends), John Marceca, Ron Schlosser, (tackles), Earle McCarthy, Jeff Bergholtz, (guards), and our key man, Center Chuck Mays, such success would not be possible. Then, too, the boys on the bench, Dane Hogan, Ron Sheakley, Irv Edwards, Ken Robertson, and all the remaining boys who made up the Jr. Varsity squad added to the combination that made the Saegertown Panthers for 1958-59 the best yet in the county. Coach, Merle Darcangelo’s 1958-1959 edition of the Panther cagers found still a few lettermen around. Returning from last years championship team were County All Star choices Bill Canon, (first team) and Wayne Jobe, (second team). Ineligible for play this year was another senior, Don Stewart who also was a first team county all star from last year. In addition, returning as a letterman was Jim Brown, play-maker, and Dan Curry. Mr. Darcangelo notes that while the main contingent of his team is back, the much-needed advantage of height is lost in Don Stewart and Herk Schmitt. He feels that this is going to prove to be a big hurdle to overcome in the league games this season. While the league is yet to be played, a speculative look can be taken at the non-league games that the Panthers have played this season. The defending champs opened their schedule at Cochranton in a thriller that found the Cats coming from behind to beat a taller Cardinal quintet by a score of 53 to 46. Most of the Panther scoring was one from the outside, finding Canon, Jobe, and Brown all hitting the cords with their favorite shots. The second team to fall to the Panthers was Fairview, a woefully weak combination that was no match for the Cats from Saegertown. The final score on this one was 68-36. In two subsequent games, Saegertown fell to the losing column and did so at the hands of the powerful Girard Yellowjackets. In the first contest, on the Panther hardwood, a touch and go thriller kept the crowd roaring until the very last minute of the game when the taller Girard team finally managed to edge the Panthers out by one point, ending a hard fought game with a score of 62-61. The second game at Girard ended with a score of 52-53, the Yellowjackets again the the winning column. But the black cats are hard to keep down, and coach Darcangelo's quintet chose another tough team from Lawrence Park to tangle with. Another hard fought battle found the Panthers freezing the ball in the last minute of the game with an edge of two points to protect. The game ended with a score of 48-46, and a victory for Saegertown. The taste of victory is sweet, and so the next team to challenge the Panthers was the Mercer Mustangs, still licking their wounds from an unsuccessful attempt to beat Saegertown in the football season. Running up an early lead, the Cats won the game by a (cont'd on page 68) : Mr. Merle Darcanglo ROW 1: Mr. Baker, J. McDonough, D. Hogan, K. Robertson, E. McCarthy, J. Melville. ROW 2: D. Marstellar, W. Curtis, B. Robertson, J. Keefer, R. Sheakley, M. Zirkle An eager group of basketball players are to be found in Coach Richard Baker's junior varsity team. Still developing their tactics and form, these Panther Cubs will form the nucleus of the varsity club next year. Even so, some will see cage action with the varsity this year. Flexing their muscles in their own games, the Cubs have gotten off to a good start in non-league play. In preliminary games with the same schools as the varsity plays, the Cubs have won and lost 2 at press time. Off to a bad start, the junior cagemen lost to Cochranton 35-31. It can be said that the game was lost at the foul line as the Cubs hit on only 30°Jo of their free throws. Bouncing back, however, the Cubs took them 69-44 on a snowy night at Fairview, and again at home by 68-36. The bench was cleared both games, as the reserve crew moved in to aid in defeating them. A powerful aggregation formed the Girard Jayvee Quintet, but they proved to be less powerful than the Panther Cubs, as they beat the Yellow Jackets both at home and away by 5 and 6 points respectively. One of the best games played by the jayvees to date was against Lawrence Park. In a closely matched game, the Cubs passed well, shot well and looked in good form. As a result, the victory was theirs to the tune of 27-24. The second defeat for the young Panthers came at the hands of the Mercer Jr. Mustangs. The Cubs again played well, but could not stop the determined Mercer team who handed the Cubs the second defeat. However, after licking their wounds, the Panthers then moved in on the Edinboro Juniors, hosting them on the Panther Court and beating them by a large score. Again the bench was cleared as the reserve Juniors aided in the Victory. The Cubs then moved into league-play, hosting the Blue Devils from Cambridge Springs. Completely outclassing them, the Cubs tallied 36 points to the Cambridge Juniors 17. In the second league tilt, the reserve squad outplayed a scrappy Conneaut Lake team to win the second straight league game by a score of 21-41. Thus, the Panther Cubs have gotten off to a good start in what looks to be a very interesting series of contests. Coach: Mr. Richard Baker Basketball in the Jr. H. Some of us have been in the band since Mr. Billingsley first came to Saeger-town. We are the last of the first. We have watched the band grow from 12 members to its present total of 86. As we leave, we think of its development and are both thankful for our good luck, the enjoyable experiences we have gone through, and Mr. Billingsley, and sad because we shall never again go through such experiences. We started our marching band in the spring of 1958 with the old members. We marched in 3 competitions; Northeast, Kearsarge, and Cambridge Springs. These in as many months, and we won first prize of $100 at each. Then, the year began in earnest. The new members had to be trained. Preview night was Sept. 5, 1958. One number in this show was done with colored lights. From then on we played at the high school football games and, in addition, shows at Clariton Band Festival, Clarion College, Ligonier, Allegheny College, Thiel College, a Hallowe'en parade in Saegertown, and two shows in Erie. Our last show was at the First Annual Gem City All-Star Bowl Game in Erie, Pa., on November 27th. BELOW: Our District Band representatives, five of 180 students who gathered at Conneaut Valley H. Francis Higgins (Alto Sax), Richard Phelan (Coronet), Joseph Keefer (Bass), Donald Gerhart (Baritone), Joan Judd (Flute) The most wonderful experience we went through this last year was that of our trip to Harrisburg which started April 25th and ended for some at about 2:00 A.M. and at 1:00 p.m. of the 28th for others. We won an excellent1 rating at the State concert band contest at Harrisburg and stayed overnight at Gettysburg on the way back. At Gettysburg, we saw the memorials and battlefield and enjoyed ourselves fully. On the way back, one of the busses broke down and the boys stayed behind until it was repaired. We held a Christmas concert this year in conjunction with our newly formed Chorus. This, too, as our other endeavors, was a large success. John Van Bockern, a clarinet player from Linesville, Pa., who studied in New York, will solo with the band in our Concert to be held this spring. This will be quite an experiment for the band. Thus, we seniors are leaving great possibilities to those to follow. We sincerely hope the band will fulfill its enormous possibilities and become even greater. We think it will. There are thirty-eight members who are scheduled for all but three periods of the week. Members check books out and in and shelve books as well as help to keep the library in order. Members meet once a week at activity period to learn more about libraries. The purposes of the F.T.A. are varied. A few are: to interest good students in becoming teachers, to explore the teaching field, to develop the beginnings of professional attitudes, to provide an opportunity to work with children and to render service to the school and the community. The Saegertown Chapter of this organization is comparatively new, but in a few years we have done many things. We have visited colleges and attended classes and we have been able to send students to the Saegertown Elementary School to help teachers or to take the place of an absent teacher. We have had several guest lecturers from Allegheny College and have taken field trips to the college for the purpose of advanced study in geology, etc. We are planning a field trip to Pittsburgh to tour some of the places of scientific interest. Our science club will take part in the Crawford County Science Fair to be held in April, 1959. The Saegertown High School Chorus, consisting of 46 members, is under the direction of Mr. Robert Smith. This year the chorus participated in the Christmas Concert, on December 23rd. They were accompanied on the piano by Richard Orr, a senior. The chorus concert was presented after the Saegertown High School Band, under the direction of Mr. James Billingsley, had presented their concert. This spring the chorus will take part in the Spring Festival. The last performance of the year will be at the Baccalaureate Services. ROW 1, L. to R.: Mr. Hillis, Instructor, D. Daniels, M. These students attended the annual art conference held there in October. This is an annual event for this class. Drivers Training Teacher: Mr. Michael A new and long-awaited course at our school this year is the Driver's Training Course under the direction of Mr. Michael. The school has acquired a 1958 Chevrolet, pictured here, from the Wyatt Chevrolet Agency in Meadville. This automobile is a standard shift, two tone sedan, and is leased to the school for the 9 month school term. At that time it is returned to the dealer for resale. The study of driving is begun with bookwork. The book is SPORTSMANLIKE DRIVING. This part of the course is taken one period a week. Good driving mles, sportsmanship, and the car make-up is taught. After all of this is taught, it must be put into practice. When a student is sixteen and gets his learner's permit, he is taken out in the 1958 Chevrolet to do his roadwork. In this way the student is corrected when he makes mistakes so they won't become habits. The student usually drives two periods a week. A few things taught are parallel and angle parking, correct stopping and starting, and good control of the car at all times. Generally, he just puts his book knowledge to work. When the studying and practicing of driving is put together, you have a well-trained and capable driver. score of 50-46. Instrumental in gaining the necessary points was the 14-46, and a victory for Saegertown. Two more victorious clashes were marked up for the small but scrappy and fast Panthers before league play began. A return engagement at Fairview on a snowy, stormy night, resulted in a 69-44 triumph for the Cats. Entertaining Edinboro, who filled in a vacant spot left by Sparta leaving the league, the host team proved to be downright unfriendly as it walloped the Red Raiders 39-68. These games provided the necessary know-how for the 58-59 Panther team to enter into league competition. In the opener with Cambridge Springs, the Panthers went immediately to the losing column by losing in an upset to the Blue Devils, 48-49. Coming back strong in the second game with Conneaut Lake. The Panthers broke into the winning column by defeating the Indians 42-57. Thus, at presstime, the Panthers crouch to spring at the next foe in a league that still is anybody's for the winning. Though lacking in height, the Darcangelomen have the spirit and get-up-and-go that make this years Panther team the team to be feared and beaten in the Crawford County Class B League. When September arrives And activities start, Much fills our days, We can't tell them apart; We cherish them all, But our memory's not clear, So in order to keep them, We've stored them in here.
