Dedication For his cooperation, conscientious interest, and willing assistance, we, the members of the Yearbook Staff, wish to dedicate our 1957-58 edition of the Alpha Omega to Mr. Robert Wattras. His sponsorship in various student activities and his interest in student welfare have gained the appreciation and respect of the entire student body. 3 Administration Sandy Shelenberger, Secretary TO THE EDITOR AND YEARBOOK STAFF: I wish to congratulate everyone who had anything to do with the publication of this fine yearbook. It exemplifies courage, skill, and hard work to turn out a book as fine as this. Todays age may be called many things by scientists and others. However, It is the Age of Responsibility with which every member of society had to contribute to the welfare of this nation. The youth of this nation have been criticized severely and In many cases, the criticism is unjust. Youth patterns his life after adults. We fall to realize that youth of this nation will have to overcome the mistakes and problems which adults pass on to the succeeding generation. With best wishes to everyone. C. J. They were undefeated in league play and, consequently, won the Crawford County Championship. On March 5, 1958, they will compete with the Erie County Champions at David Mead Fieldhouse, Meadville, Pa. The Panthers show great promises of going all the way to the state play-offs if they succeed in winning District Ten. The Panthers were defeated a total of four times by no-league teams. I t Saegertown's 1957 Marching Bank began practicing August 12, thus commencing its fourth year as a marching unit. Enlarged to elghty-one members, all were eager to resume where the successful 56 band had finished. The second Annual Preview Night was held September 5, in preparation for the future schedule. This program included all Saegertown football games, Thiel College Homecoming, Allegheny College Homecoming, outstanding parades in Jamestown, New York, and Erie, as well as the Clarl-ton Band Festival. It was at the Clariton Band Festival that our band had an opportunity to march with some of the Tri-State Area's greatest participants. These included Baldwin High in Pittsburgh and the nationally-famous Massillon unit from Ohio. On November 10 the entire marching band traveled to Cleveland to play for its second professional football game. A crowd of 54,000 attended this Browns-Steelers game and many others saw the performance on television. We extend our sincerest congratulations and appreciation to this fine unit and wish it continued success in 1958. • •• Newspaper Staff ROW ONE: Mrs. Michael, J. Kllngensmith, R. Langley, J. But in the eighth, we worked real hard; To do the best, we would; And Mr. Aberg was the man; Who taught us what he could. Into the ninth grade we all went; At last a dream come true! For we were now in high school; Big stuff were we to do. We grew-up in the tenth grade; At least, we thought we did; And some of us began to date; To Dads we're still the Kid. Our Junior year was almost best; Three plays were on thqt year; And all the boys were in the cast; Submerged and all its fears. Selling Christmas cards to make money for the prom; Paying less attention to directions from our Mom; It was the main attraction to be escorted by a man— But you couldn't let your pappy see your feller hold.your hand; High and mighty Seniors who would depart in 58 ; Intelligent, sophisticated, clever graduates. Who say we worked hard for twelve years or more— Who slaved and struggled in days of yore; To copy from the paper nearest in sight; To tell Mr. Gibbons if isn't or ain't was right! Commencement days were drawing near. We sophisticated Seniors had nothing to fear. We tried to play hooky and use a lot of bluff. Then times began to really get rough. Teachers worked us hardest in the few remaining days, They tried so hard to rid us of the moron haze. At last they had to give up hope. We were a problem, with which they couldn't cope. But as we think back over our school life, There wasn't too much trouble and strife. If we had our school life to live over again. Our grades and behavior we would amend. We would be perfect—that's what we say, But would it last throughout the day? ? ? c 72 Winnie Lee Hogan Bill P.: I once had a beard like yours and when I saw how terrible it looked, I got it cut off. Gordon W.: I used to have a face like yours, but when I saw how terrible I looked, I grew a beard. Mr. Fleming: This assignment takes a responsible person. Ford S.: That's for me. Wherever I am and things go wrong they tell me I'm responsible. Mr. Bennett: Dick, can you tell me how iron was discovered? Dick S.: I heard my father say they smelt it. Roger D.: How do you like that dirty look she gave you? JudyW.: Who gave me? Roger D.: Mother nature. Judy K. (Playfully): Let me chew your gum. Ken Z. (More playfully): Which one, upper or lower? Mr. Bloom: What did Custer say at his last stand? John M.: Where the heck did all the Indians come from? Tom R.: Teacher, would you punish a boy for something he didn't do? Miss Racop: Why no, Tom. Tom R.: Well, I didn't do my homework. Mr. Bloom: Where was the Declaration of Independence signed? Dan K.: At the bottom. Darlene A.: What's the difference between a piece of toast and an elephant? Larry Bowersox: No difference because neither can ride a bicycle. One night at the movies I overheard this exchange between Tom S. and Sandra H. Can you see all right? Tom asked. Yes. Are you in a draft? No. Does that man in back of you have his feet on your chair? No. Mind trading places ? Joyce B.: Ed's so romantic. He always calls me Fair Lady. Diane F.: That's just force of habit. Ed's a bus driver. Jim D.: If you will marry me. I'll promise to make you the happiest woman in forty-eight states. Winnie H.: No thanks. None of that trailer life for me. Golf Teacher: Tee the ball. Pat H. (Beginner): Sure I see it, but why the baby talk? Delivery Boy: Here's the fish your mother ordered. It's C. O. D. Shirley M.: You don't have to spell it out for me—and anyway she ordered salmon. Esther M.: Bald-headed men always seem so cheerful. Joan F.: Why not, nothing ever gets in their hair. Mr. Lenohart: I think it's about time for us to have a man-to-man talk about the facts of life. Park: O.K., Dad, what do you want to know? Mr. Gibbons: Which month has twenty-eight days in it? Ron B. (Thinking a minute): They all have. Merle: What did you give your mule when he got sick? Fred F.: Turpentine. A few days later. Merle: I gave my mule turpentine like you said, Fred, but he died. Fred: Killed mine too. Janet S.: What's the difference between dancing and marching? Dan P.: I don't know. Janet S.: I didn't think you did, let's sit down. Mr. Acker: How did this fight start, you two? Bob: Well, Pop, it all started when Bill hit me back first. George wires home to his brother at home: Have failed five subjects. Prepare Father. Herk wires back: Father prepared. Prepare yourself. Mr. Watress; Aren't you gonna answer my questions. Jerry D.: I shook my head. Mr. Watress: Did you expect me to hear it rattle clear up here? Larry Brown: That dress brings out your eyes. Rosie L.: Yours too. Larry M.: Pardon me but you look like Helen Green. Virginia D.: So what, I look worse in pink. Sue B.: How can the letter B help a narrow road? Ruth B.: I know—make it broad. Mr. Bennett: What do porcupines have that no other animals have? Terry B.: Little porcupines. Bob Me.: Carl P.: Bob Me.: Are you tan from the sun? Yes. Well, I'm Bob from the earth. Donna J.: Bonnie H.: What does R.S.V.P. mean on this invitation? Rush in, shake hands, vanish promptly. Virginia L. Sandy Me. : The trouble with you is, you're always wishing for something you haven't got. : What else can I wish for? John W.: Fred W.: How can I ever repay you for your help in getting my car out of the ditch. By cash, check, or money order. Dave L.: Larry B.: Dave L.: I'm finished with that girl. She asked me if I could dance. What's so insulting about that? We were dancing when she asked me. Emily S.: What two letters of the alphabet can fly? Bob: I don't know. What? Emily S.: Bee and Jay. A motorist (Carol S.) filling in an accident report wrote: I was backing out of a parking space, and by the time I backed out far enough to see what was coming, it already had. Kay R.: Joetta S.: Kay R.: I saw my doctor today about lapse of memory. What did he do? Made me pay in advance. Dan T.: Sandy E.: A sharp nose indicates curiosity. And a flat one indicates too much. Janet M.: Bob P.: Isn't your new jacket rather loud. Yes, but I intend to wear a muffler with it. Mr. Gibbons: Chuck, explain the difference between sufficient and enough. Chuck P.: Well, if Mother helps me to a piece of cake, I get sufficient; but if I help myself I get enough. 74 .. .And AWAY We Go! !
