EX LIBRIS EDITOR Carol McMichael ASSISTANT EDITOR Susie Bradshaw BUSINESS MANAGER Joseph Fortuna ART EDITOR James Smith ADVISOR Hilda Toulson ALMA MATER Hid from sight within a valley, Dear old Saegertown; Loud we raise our youthful voices. School of great renown. In her halls and rooms we chatted, Gay new friends we've found; Praise to thee, our Alma Mater, Dear old Saegertown. 2 CARL J. MAURANA DEDICATION To Mr. Carl J. Maurana, our history and P.O.D. teacher, guidance counselor and friend, we, the class of 1956, dedicate our school annual the ALPHA OMEGA. A note of appreciation and thanks comes from each one of us for his continued efforts and guidance. TO THE SENIORS I wish to express my sincere and humble thanks to all the members of your class for this honor you have bestowed upon me. I shall cherish it for years to come. Your class can be proud of the achievements it has attained. You, as a group, have made Saegertown Area High School one of the outstanding schools in Crawford County. The lessons you have learned here may have seemed a burden to you at times; however, you will have many memories of your school, classmates and friends you have made here. Because you are about to graduate, do not forget the lessons you have learned. To get along in this modern world we need people who are unafraid of work, who are educated and well informed and who have a love for people and country. My sincerest thanks to everyone. It has been a pleasure to be associated with all of you. Good luck and best of success to all. Sincerely yours, • Carl J. Maurana IN APPRECIATION I wish I could thank, individually, each person who helped to make this yearbook a success. It was through their combined efforts that the publication of our yearbook was possible. I would like to give special thanks to the members of the staff. All of them have carried out their duties and have helped solve the problems that we have encountered along the way. Especially helpful were Jim Smith and his Art Staff which included Ernest Huson, who designed the cover. Since the final success depends upon our financial position, we must not forget to thank Mr. Moore who gave much valuable time and effort. To Joseph Fortuna, business manager, and all the students who have aided in selling subscriptions or helping to secure patrons, thank you. We are especially indebted to Mrs. Toulson, our faculty advisor, for her countless ideas and assistance, for the encouragement and guidance she has given to each of us. I would also like to thank the other members of the faculty for their co-operation and contributions. It is through the best efforts of the staff, with the wonderful co-operation of many more, that we are able to present the ALPHA OMEGA, 1956. Most of them are pleasant ones; we shall choose the best to remember as the highlights of our school years. The following are a few of the events which have made up a definite period of our lives. A group of excited boys and girls entered into the new routine of seventh grade in 1950 in the old building. We quickly changed ways and settled into two homerooms with Mr. Haley and Mr. Black as our horneroom teachers. We elected Glenn Stewart president; Richard Smith and Carol McMichael were our Student Council representatives. As eighth graders we again elected Glenn Stewart president and assembled into two homerooms with Mr. Ghering and Mr. Mau-rana as our advisors. Jim George and Joe Fortuna were our representatives to Student Council that year. After enjoying a long summer vacation we entered our new high school as freshmen in 1952. Miss Racop and Mr. Michaels were our homeroom sponsors. We elected Glenn Stewart as president from Miss Racop’s room and Kay Smith as president from Mr. Michaels’ room. Carol McMichael and Jim Smith were elected to Student Council. Many of us recieved our exercise during this year as we attended classes in both the new and old buildings. We were all saddened by the news when, during the summer of 1953, one of our favorite classmates, Gerald Beatty, was killed by a very tragic accident. Mr. Ottand Mr. Haluch were our advisors in tenth grade and we elected Jim George to guide us as president. One of our classmates was honored by the distinction of being elected football queen. Shirley Holois received this honor. Dale Hunter and David Klingensmith were our Student Council representatives and we had one member on the Junior Varsity cheering squad, Kay Hoover. Finally in 1954 we entered a year we had looked forward to--our junior year. Miss Racop and Mr. Ott were our faculty advisors and we elected Carol McMichael as president from Mr. Ott's room and Glenn Stewart from MissRacop’s room. Kay Smith and Margaret Kvashay were elected to serve on the football queen’s court. Several members of our class were members of the championship basketball team, with Lee Hunter, a sports figure to be remembered for many years, as high scorer. Eight members of our class entered politics and ran for Student Council with Carol McMichael, Bruce Fallon, Kay Smith, and Joe Fortnna being victorious. Jim George and Roberta Kindervater were our Student Council representatives. Marjorie Rowland was a member of the Junior Varsity cheer- leaders. Several members of our class were members of the concert band that took a wonderful trip to York for state contests. Howard Moore, of our group, was chosen as a member of District Chorus. We sponsored the prom and banquet with STARDUST as the theme under the wonderful guidance of Miss Racop. Carol McMichael and Glenn Stewart were junior escorts for commencement and baccalaureate with Margaret Kvashay, Kay Smith, Shirley Holois, Bruce Fallon, David Klingensmith and Jim George as usherettes and ushers. In 1955 we entered the building as Seniors. As we were soon to find out, it was to be a busy year. At last we were together in one homeroom. The library was our homeroom and Mr. Gibbons and Mrs. Stickler were our advisors. Carol McMichael was elected president. Roberta Kindervater and Kay Smith were members of the football queen's court. Our representatives to State Student Council at Beaver Falls were Carol McMichael, Kay Smith and Joe Fortuna. Again several of our group were members of the band. The marching band participated in several events including Pitt Field Day. Three girls won honors in Home Ec. and F.H.A. Margaret Kvashay won the county apple dessert contest, Mildred Bussard was our livestock queen, and Mollie Leonheart baked the best cherry pie. In December, under the direction of Mr. Gibbons, we sponsored our first class play, ACT YOUR AGE, which was a success. Again we have a representative on the Junior Varsity cheering squad, Doris Besanson. Six members of our class were members of District Band, several winning first and second chairs. Among these Betty Lou Schrubb received the added honor being selected for State Band. Five members of our class were chosen to attend District Chorus. The senior Commercial girls published the school newspaper, THE PANTHER FLASH, under Mrs. Butler's direction. One big annual project, that concerned every senior, was the making of the school annual, THE ALPHA OMEGA. Carol McMichael was one of six county girls to receive the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizenship Award. Joe Fortuna and Jim George attended Pennsylvania Model Legislature. Joe was elected a senator and Jim a representative. Harry McCarthy, our team’s high scorer, was elected most valuable Class B player at Oil City Derrick Invitational Basketball Tournament. There will be added events as we are preparing for commencement but these are a few of the memories we will take with us. Inanticipation of the future we separate into the world sharing these memories. 24 Mrs. Metz, Mrs. Pond, Mrs. Hannold, Mrs. Vaughn, Mrs. Nageotte, Mrs. Flick. JUNIORS SOPHOMORES FRESHMEN D. FOOTBALL The Saegertown football squad, coached by Mr. Maurana and Mr. Darcangelo , posted the finest record in the school's history. It captured the Crawford County Class B championship. Their record of seven won and one lost included victories over Conneaut Valley, Cambridge Springs, and Townville. We had a loss to Youngsville. The best team effort was a come-from-behind victory over Conneaut Valley; the outstanding individual was Lee Hunter who scored five touchdowns in the Cambridge contest. Tobe graduated are: L. Hunter , Stewart, D. Hunter, Jordan, Peters, George, McCarthy, Scott, Edsall, and Baste. However with the return of Miller, Shreve, Sweet, and Doolittle , Mr. Maurana will have the nucleus for a strong line. These were judged by a disinter ested group and Ted Morrow, an eleventh grade student, had his design awarded first place. The flag is being constructed by the Art and Home Economics Departments . SPECIAL RECOGNITION Toni Lee Caskey was given an a-ward of recognition by the Saeger-town Area Lions Club for her heroic act of applying tourniquets to Mr. Don D' Valle whose legs were crushed in a highway accident. Doctors credited her with saving his life. Miss Ann Valentine can be proud of the use her first aid course was put to. We are all happy for Toni. Toni Lee Caskey D. Hunter, L. Hunter M. Leonhart, S.
