That’s when we played with fancy crayons and chalK, That’s where we picked up swearing and big time talk. Then we began the second grade, Our pencils and marbles we started to trade. We moved over to the new building And thought we knew most everything. We got promoted to the third grade. They called it progress that we made. But back to the old building they sent us, And, believe us, we went without any fuss. Progressed to the fourth grade in 1939. We took up a dramatic shine. Tom Sawyer was our stage project, Twas the year Tom Sawyer was wrecked. Then we were pushed along the way. The first thing we knew--it was promotion day. But, had it not been for Mr. Boylan’s lift— I’m afraid our grade would still be the fifth. Into the sixth grade, we slipped by mistake, Ron Wiestling told about squirrels--doesn’t that take the cake. We cried about spelling words that we had missed. Then all at once—we wished we were old enough to enlist. Mrs. Patterson guided us through 1942 Twas the year of our whispering contest too. We began to notice the merit chart, But most of us showed off just to be smart. Moved to the library in eighth grade That’s a memory which will never fade A “Leap Year Party’’ was our big delight. Because the girls got to kiss the boys good-night. They called us freshmen in 1944 When we wised up and learned the score. Began our cheating and pulling the bluff. And all agreed that we were big-time stuff. In an assembly play, you see. We acted in “Make Room For Rodney’’. Remember what a day it was for us, There was so much commotion and so much fuss. We grew up in the eleventh grade. Allowances began to be paid. Some of us even ventured out to date, And our big aim was just to rate. Selling magazines, making money for our prom, Paying less attention to directions from Mom. It was the main attraction to be escorted by a man-But you couldn’t let your pappy see your feller hold our hand Or he would punish us severly in his special kind of way— He’d restrict us to the house for one whole Saturday. High and mighty seniors who would depart in '48, Intelligent, sophisticated, clever graduates. Who say we worked hard for 12 years or more — Who slaved and struggled in days of yore To copy from the paper nearest in sight So we could tell if “isn’t” or “ain’t” was right. Commencement days were drawing near, We sophisticated seniors had nothing to fear. We tried to play hookey and use a lot of bluff, Then times began to really get rough. Teachers worked us hardest in the few remaining days. They tried so hard to rid us of the moron haze. At last they had to give up all hope, We were a problem, with which they couldn’t cope. But as we think back over our school life, There wasn’t too much trouble and strife. If we had our school life to live over again, Our grades and behavior we would amend. We would be perfect--that’s what we say, But we think it would last about one day. Joan Perrine ir o t-C New York - 1958 CLASS PROPHECY Just arrived in New York City via the Toonerville Trolley to keep an appointment with the editor of the New York Times, Jessie Burns. She has her private secretary, Barbara Baker Luikart, and ace photographer, Delores Stanley, working on a survey of the Class of 1948, Saegertown-Woodcock School. The editor-in-chief. Miss Burns, and yours truly hail a Yellow Taxi driven by none other than Lester Abbott. Riding along Fifth Avenue with the radio blaring away, we hear Carl Hamilton singing a commercial— D U Z. Mr. Abbott drove us to Sak’s, Fifth Avenue, where we attended a spring fashion show. That’s right, Ruth Peterson modeling a strapless bathing suit, the latest from Paris. While talking with Ruth, she told us that Mary Floyd was to appear in a Broadway ballet, but wouldn’t go through a revolving door. She said she had no revolver. Spent a delightful afternoon and on to the Metropolitan Opera House. Yes, there’s Rachel Eaton and Bernice McGill trying to reach High C. Leaving the Opera, crossing the street, we meet Norma Owen making a cross country tour on her motorcycle. I found out that some of the Class of ’48, however, had not reached New York; so I travelled to Saegertown via Rapid Transit. Just got there in time to hear Marie Abbott giving an address on Perfect Homes’’ over WMGW, Meadville. Anne Stainbrook is married now —she really rules with an iron hand. The Red and White, under efficient management of Patty Smith Jensen, has enlarged and now includes a special testing department --Elise Dahl, food sampler. The new school building located beside the fire house, houses 600 children, is surrounded by large clean playgrounds, and contains a swimming pool and two gyms —one is special for Mr. Fuller. The comfortable swivel chair is occupied by Mr. Richard Battin, principal. The new agriculture teacher is Mr. Marvin Hall. The girls’ coach, Nyla Schlosser, brought the girls through the tournament. School nurse, J0an Perrine, is very busy keeping the cheerleaders and basketball teams taped up. Joann Mosier, the Home-Ec teacher, is selling tube steaks (that’s hot dogs to us) at the basketball games. A skating party is advertised for the school. The owner of Waterford Skating Rink, Beatrice V. Carr, assures a good time for all. Just heard that Carl Stallard left for Pittsburgh to be Manager of the Pirates. Good luck. Oh yes, Harold Bloom is keeping books for his father and now has a fifteen minute radio program called The Crooner’’, over WMGW. Ruthie Rohleder advertises her beauty shop over the same station. It’s a good thing that radio station started up in 1947. Also read in the Tribune that Pauline Lenhart is still meeting difficulty in her designing—trying to get rid of the new look. Elwyn Moses, research scientist for the Viscose, caused another explosion. Faye Jordan Stallard spends some time coaching Sandy Theuret in her cheerleading. Lorraine Bradway is typing for Baldwin Laboratories and Ronnie Wiestling just made his first move to be Saegertown’s next medical doctor—he passed his physical for med school. And so goes the future of the class of ’48. However, this was the first year that we have had a baseball team and we are looking ahead to much more success for our team in the coming years. Twelve of the fourteen games played were won. Both of the defeats, at the hands of Spartansburg, cost our team a chance to compete for the county championship. Loss of almost half of the squad by graduation may be keenly felt during next years campaign. However, all agree that our strong reserve material from this years squad will form a nucleus for another winning combination. Second Row: Vic Fuller, Richard Baldwin, Gary Marley, Thomas Hicker-nell, Harold Bloom, Junior Terrill. Managers: Edward Baker and Carl Stallard not in picture. The Boys’ Varsity Team, coached by Mr. Fuller, had a successful season. Starting with an impressive five-game winning streak, the team showed unusual spirit and fight down to the last game. Injuries, with resulting loss of two regulars mid-way through the campaign, crippled championship hopes. Ronald Weistling had the honor of being chosen as our representative for the Crawford County All-Star Team, and Dick Jensen was chosen on many ‘all-star opponents’ teams. Loss of two seniors by graduation will be felt, but strong reserves moving up from Junior High and Junior Varsity teams offer strong hopes for future seasons. s. W. H.
