Text from Pages 1 - 188 of the 1974 volume:

The Ivy that Clings to the Wall HERE on the far side of time We hurriedly ran from the safety of the schoolyards we 're near the end of the line. in search of a better more beautiful world. Our days have grown withered and small One day we turned in the road to Hnd like the ivy that clings to the wall. our new worlds were all in our minds. OFF on the long road to home Some other season perhaps we 're meant to go it alone, pretty girls sat on our laps. still there are times we recall But seasons can change after all the ivy that clings to the wall. like the ivy that clings to the wall. - ROD NICKUEN Saddle River Country Day 7974 Page 2 'Q DOUGLAS S. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly, and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggessive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser perons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble, it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is, many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about loveg for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars, you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. Desiderata Page 61 Page 62 ii' as 1 ,, 4 in .. ,,::. ,. wr? lr MQ QNQ . e 'Q ss f ,,.,,,. I will'st declare upon myself the most befitting title of Eccentric Actress. Be it known that I wilI'st be housed in yonder wilds. Ah! Tis life to do what one can not. Thus, let it be made clear to thou that a most honourable professor of the sacred sciences is to me as-the rays of the glimmering sun that doth shine through the deathly fall of rain. The success in one lies birth to the things he hath experienced in the grandeurof life. Hence, the New jersey Shakspeare Festival and the University of New Hampshire Summer Repertory Theatre and its persons thereof give way to mine strengthening of character. Lastly, never will l forgeteth the times which I hath had in these halls of supreme knowledge: the pulication or such, the small man with'st the large heart, and the misery of failure in the tasks of a chemist. The memories have therefore become imbedded in me, and are as much of me as mine own soul itself. . The hand that holds the doorknob PROFESSOR LAUREL R. LE Roi 1oNEs There falls the words of fools about my ears To hasten by the years the journey that l make Through myself The travelers that pass by me as l mend my ways, All reaching out to say their path can Hnd the way To the truth. Answers everywhere, promising solution to my fears, Leading through halls with no doors in the walls, And leave me in the darkness. But to close my ears to all will bar the way for those Who've travelled through. The silence of a candle burning in my room Speaks softly of a peaceful balance to be found just beyond. The road within without a right or wrong With lanes for only one where solely one must see, And will know. Stillness that resounds, singing sounds of hope to light my way, Drawing me near to a path that is clear To free myself from darkness. And the voice within the candle whispers of a timeless peace That lies beyond. Varsity Sports in a Nutshell Varsity Football The football year was highlighted by the running exploits of Willie Correllg the passing excellence of Paul Kerr, and the defensive maneuvers of Mitch Kassel. The Rebels started off the year with a resounding 44-28 victory against Daycroft. This set the pattern for the year of beating the weaker teams of the league big. The Rebel team met expectations of being a good football team unfortunately there was Larry Moody and Wayne Howard of Robinson and Cedar Knolls respectively to end their dreams of a Tri-State League Championship. The winner of the M.V.P. lMost Valuable Playerj was Willie Correll who set a Rebel Record with scoring 142 points in one season. Mitch Kassel won the Geoffrey Benner Earle Memorial Trophy as the most improved player. Though the Rebels did not win the championship every player can be proud of the job they had done. S.R. Spearheaded by jeff Ruskin, the Rebels learned to play team basketball. With Captain Andy Dwork and his 19.8 scoring average, Ray Porter's floor generalship, Scott The Turk's Sheldon, john Wicknertz's 14.8 rebounding average the Rebels managed a 13-9 record. The Rebels have a fine promise for the future losing only three men, Andy Dwork, Nick The Mad Bomber Barbarotto, and Roger Stoskopf, while Brad Stone is ready to come on and take a starting role. With Saddle River's youth and its 9-5 Tri-State League record, they look to take the Championship next year. S.R. Opp. 62 . . . . . . Listen to what is wise, and try to understand it. Yes, beg for knowledgeg plead for insight. It is the Lord who gives wisdom. Knowledge and understanding come from him. PRO VERBS 4 THE BENEFIT OF WISDOM Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do. Whatever else you get, get insight. Love wisdom and she will make you great. Embrace her, and she will bring you honor - Always remember what you have learned. Your education is your life - guard it well. ECCLESIASTES 72 The sayings of wise men are like the sharp sticks that shepherds use to guide sheep. They have been given by God, the one shepherd of us all. Son, there is something else to watch out for. There is no end to the writings of books and too much study will wear you out. Mr. and Mrs. Paul S. Kerr, lr.
