In many ways the year 1973-74 was an historic era, marking the end of our first decade - our founding period - and the beginning of our second decade - our maturing years. This was particularly evident in the spirit and enthusiasm of the students this past year. I have found Sacred Heart students most adept at combining good fun and joy, with a serious concern for learning and the pressing social problems of our day. Though engaged in scholarly pursuits, Sacred Heart students never leave the real world - the world of living and of loving. It has been a most satisfying year for all of us who are members of the Sacred Heart Community - a year which I personally shall remember with fondness. It has been a year in which I learned much from our students, and from my associates on the facutly and in the administration. For this I am most grateful, grateful especially to our graduating seniors who set the tone for all of us. f'f7 Q ,V ,I - , 'J I . ,fUN X. -:J Robert A. In times of need, in times of hope, in times of planning for the future, he's always there. To these students comments we add, Not only has this institution greatly benefited from this man, but also those who have met him, be it once. The sorority offers both social and personal fulfillment to the women at Sacred Heart. Beta Delta Phi has participated in cancer drives, Thanksgiv- ing Food Drives, the Appalachia Drive, visiting Cardinal McCluskey Orphanage in New York, visiting Van Doren Con- valescent Home, and working with children at the Bridgeport Recreation Program. This sorority is unique in its kind for it is the only sorority on campus that has the Associate Sisterhood Program. This program is a form of initiation where the associate sister in- volves herself in social projects rather than a rigid pledging period. The purpose of Gamma Phi Delta is to work within the Sacred Heart community and out- side communities in hopes of helping these areas and each in- dividual in the sorority. The group began under the leadership of AnnaMarie DeMattei and twenty founding sisters. Within the past three years with the help of many devoted and hard working sisters the sorority has grown to thirty-three active sisters and thirteen alumni. Within the past years Gamma Phi Delta has worked with such organizations as the United Way, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Tuberculosis, Leukemia, the Barbara Ann Fund. In promoting school unity Gamma Phi Delta has cooperated with other school organizations in joint efforts including bake sales for the Cancer Fund, Appalachia Drive and the Kelly Fund. Working with school functions is also another open road for the sorority. This includes orientation programs, the year- book staff and others. The ideals of Gamma Phi Delta are high but its ambitions are even higher. The sorority would like to extend its best wishes to all graduation seniors. VL ,L zr. Throughout the past seven years, the brothers have attempted to exemplify true fraternal traditions and have strived for the betterment of both Sacred Heart University and the community. Today, 18 active brothers are involved in making this orga- nization. The purpose ofthe Brotherhood is to promote not only the educational interests of the student body, but also, the cul- tural, academic, and social interests in accordance with the ideals of the university. In the future, the brothers will continue to help develop Christian judged principles and unite with the university and other organizations into a state of good friend- ship. 1 DeBiase 5,, if ,... Olflcers of Sigma Psi Delta I I I I I I I I I I I I I i I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I Sigma Tau Omega was founded in 1968 by a group of con- cernedjuniors and seniors who wished to see more social action initiated to the Sacred Heart community. Their first commitment to social action was the Biafran Drive in which they raised 52,500 Working our way up, we undertook the responsibility of running a three-day carnival to benefit the Noviciate of Notre Dame in Fairfield. We began a food, clothing and toy drive which was to benefit the people of Appalachia. Since this project was such a huge success, the fraternity decided to sponsor the drive every year. Sigma Tau Omega has been the first organization to win skit night for four consecutive years. Firelouse 1974 Skit Night Winner Patty .aff-.,,. ,. . Q -...
