This, however, should not be. Many hours of practice go into every performance. Several times a year these musicians play for the stu- dent body. They entertain ., us for all the home games of the basketball team. The big event of the year for the band is the minstrel. Along with developing individual skills, members of the band learn that work- ing as a unit is the only way to produce satisfying results.

Hoffmann, W. Larmeg R. Vande Loo. Second row: J. Ayers, W. Vander Heyden, J. Haanen, 58 J. Lonsdale, R. Klister. We are all proud of our schola and chorus. Year after year we consistently have a first-rate schola and choir. It takes a capable director like Father Resheske to make this possible. Singing only for liturgical functions, the scho1a's main re- sponsibility is giving God His due glory by chanting at all High Masses. Numbering over fifty mem- bers, the choir performs many times a year. Their big events include Holy Week services, May Day activities, and the ordination ceremonies. The many hours of practice spent each week by the schola and chorus members result in well-done performances.

Athletics has a very important role in the seminarian's three-point program of prayer, study, and recreation. For seminarians, one can say: participate in sports according to your abilities to ease the mind and strengthen the body. The seminarian releases his excess energy in a rugged football game or a peppy basketball game. The student encounters numerous obstacles in competition and attempts to overcome them. lf he fails, his pride is hurt, and he naturally begins to coordinate and strengthen his move- ments until he is able to Win. Sports also demand self-control and toler- ance. One quickly learns that without rules there would be complete chaos. The man who improves himself in sports also improves in prayer and study. He sees a goal, strives for it against terrific opposition, corrects mistakes, and derives satisfaction from success. l i 41?
