It was in the city of Milan, Italy, in the year 1527, that the idea of a Forty Hours' devotion was originally conceived. The people were to venerate the exposed Blessed Sacrament four times a year-at Easter, Pentecost, the Feast of the Assumption, and Christmas. The purpose of the devotion was preservation from pes- tilence and war. The Milanese rituals are thought to have sprung from a custom in the early Church of a Forty Hours' devotion from Good Friday T4 '90 03 Oligky v 2'-it ii until Easter Sunday. The practice of prayerful watch at the tomb of Christ has never officially been intro- duced into the Latin Church. The Seminary Forty Hours was held from Octo- ber 26-28. Father Donald Bazinski, Cathedral Parish, Green Bay, preached a ser- mon on each night of the devotions. He concerned himself with the Sacrament and Sacrifice of the Mass and he enlarged upon our relations with Christ through the Holy Sacrifice. n

Weekly Confessors: Rev. Joseph A. Labno CSt. John's, Seymourj, Rev. Thaddeus Koszarek CSpiritual Director, CON FESSORS Every Friday afternoon at 4:30, two of our neighboring pastors journey to the seminary to hear confessions. Father Al- fred Hietpas from Freedom, Father Joseph Labno from Seymour, and Father Donald Schneider from lsaar, who sub- stitutes, deserve many thanks for their sacrifices. These under- standing priests unselfishly avail themselves to help and guide the students on the path of SHSD, and Rev. Alfred H. Hietpas CSt. Nicholas, Freedomj. Father Koszarek delivers a class conference. perfection. SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR Father Koszarek begins his day around 5:00 A.M. Being a former army man, he has made early retiring and early rising a way of life. After he has finished his Mass, Father makes himself available in the confessional for the convenience of the students. In fact, making himself accessible to the students is Father's specialty. The door to his room is always open, and troubled students or those just wanting to talk to someone have in him a person that they can depend on. Each class has a conference with Father each week. The topics of his conferences range from the con- templative life to spiritual motivations for getting fresh air. Father Koszarek is truly one who leads and en- courages by example. Whether reading, walking, or praying, Father is augmenting by action what he has exhorted in speech.

Retreat A retreat is a most important time for a seminarian. There are decisions and resolu- tions made, some of which alter the course of a lifetime. This year's annual retreat, held from January 6-9, was conducted by Rev. Conrad Lewis, O.S.B., professor of Sacred Scripture at St. Meinrad Seminary in Indiana. Father Lewis gave the students a fresh insight into the liturgy of the Church and inspired them with his zestful approach to the spiritual life. The spirit of the re- treat and the personality of Father Lewis will long be remembered.
