DEDICATION A Dream Comes True — New Building Is Completed Dedication of the new gymnasium-audi- torium was held November 17, 1974, climaxing the almost two and a half years of planning and work. Guest spea- ker for the program was Sigurd J. Ode, assistant to the Commissioner in the Minnesota Department of Education, St. Paul. Pastor Allen Monson gave the invocation and benediction. Special music was provided by the high school band and Mrs. Charles Pegelow who sang Bless This House. The program for the new addition began in the summer of 1972. The bond elec- tion for $400,000 was carried in Decem- ber of that year. Some difficulty was encountered in April when the low bid was far over the amount of the bonds. But in June, when bids were again taken, the low bid was within the al- lowed amount. Architect was Kenneth H. Walijarvi. WSW Construction, Willmar, was the general contractor; Hoberg Brothers the mechanical and Barr's Electric, Ortonville, the electrical contractors. Shortage of various supplies caused many delays, but finally the dream came true. The new gymnasium was a reality. The first public use of the building was October 24 when the girls' basketball team defeated Renville. ABOVE LEFT: A view of the new addi- tion taken from the south. The old building in the picture is the cafeteria with the music department on second floor. Connecting the old building to the new is the commons area, then the gymnasium, and finally the stage. ABOVE RIGHT: R. Ashburn is shown working out on the popular weight ma- chine housed behind the stage. RIGHT: A capacity crowd enjoyed the Renville- Sacred Heart games on February 14. The local A team lost, but the B team won their game. 8

HOMECMING Vikings Blank Maynard Eagles 20-0 The SHHS Vikings thrilled the large crowd by winning their second homecoming game in a row as they blanked Maynard 20 to 0. That favorite week of the year Homecoming, saw few changes from the tra- ditions long established. This year the annual parade was discontinued, and Clash Day replaced Back to the Fifties Day. For the first time the dancers enjoyed live music. But there were the usual Blue and White Day, Button Day, the ex- citing pep fests, Halls of Ivy, another triumph on the football field—happy memories of another homecoming. The candidates for king and queen were K. Holien, H. Johnson, S. Swartz, B. Erickson, M. Flaata and D. Peterson, all active in school activities and popular with the stu- dent body. The students and faculty voted for king and queen on Mon- day of homecoming week, but the results of that vote were secret until the moment when Howard and Bonnie were crowned. The coronation ceremony was tra- ditional. Trumpeters S. Sunvold, R. Enestvedt and J. Lerohl played the processional and recessional. T. Mahlum was the page. Enter- tainment for the royal court in- cluded a saxophone solo by S. Haug, Autumn Leaves and Somewhere by the girls' ensem- ble and the very funny performance by the Whistlers LEFT: D. Peterson, M. Flaata, and Queen Bonnie enjoy the game. BE- LOW: M. Stai sweeps around left end for one of the biggest gains of the night. 7
