SCHOOL 1 The theme of our 1962 VIKING is SPOTLIGHTS. The events of our year 61-'62 will stand out as SPOTLIGHTS through the coming years. The dances, football and basketball games, music events, and club meetings are bright spots that have brought to us many happy memories. These memories consti- tute a world of gay activities, competent teachers, and most of all, lasting friendships. The highlight of the Seniors' year was commencement. We hope they will be SPOTLIGHTS for others out of school life and in the future. The cooperation needed to keep a small group going is tre- mendous. The students must accept the responsibilities they receive when playing in such a group. But along with the work come many enjoyable experiences. These experiences are valuable to the individual in his or her later life. Since the first Student Government Day of last year was quite successful, the Student Council again decided to have such a day this year. On March 23, 1962 the student body selected a student school board, which chose the student administration and student teachers. On March 30, 1962, the selected students took over the administration and teach- ing for one day. Because of the hard work done by the student teachers in preparation for their day's teaching. Student Government Day again was very successful. ADMINISTRATION: Elaine Feldman, secretary; Roger Hardy, Principal; Myron Peterson, Sup- erintendent. Composed of representatives from the different grades, the council tries to form practical solutions to school problems that may arise during the school year. Again this was quite an active year as preparations for Home- coming, the selling of popcorn, planning and dec- orating for the semi-formal dance, student govern- ment day, and the inforcement of the dress code, which had been formed earlier by the council, took considerable time. Here are some of the council members who worked on the council's main project of popcorn selling. Ramstad With Dick Evanson in the leading role as Elwood P. Dowd, the 1962 Senior Class of Sacred Heart High School presented the Broadway production of Harvey1' April 13th, 1962 at 8:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Since the time this play was released to non-professionals, it has become one of the most popular plays ever offered to non-professionals. The story centers around Mrs. Simmon's attempt to commit her brother, Elwood, to a sani- tarium, and becoming mistaken for the one to be committed. With the help of Harvey, the in- visible white rabbit, the resulting conclusion made for an entertaining evening for all. SEATED: Harvey and Dick. When spring breaks tomorrow, we will be facing our future in the adult world. To this future, then, and the part that Sacred Heart High School has played in preparing us for it, we dedicate the 1962 VIKING. «% 46 X FACULTY Principal, Mr. Potter; Superintendent, Mr. Ellingson. Behind every successful and efficient school system lies an organization which gets few honors - the school board. They work in conjunction with the superintendent and principal to set up school poli- cies and educational programs for us. Assisting them was our very petite and affable secretary, Ruth Fischer, who was very helpful and willing to offer her services for anything we needed. They arrive at school bright and early each morning to begin preparing a well-balanced lunch for the students each noon. With cleaning and planning and preparing for the next day's meal, they remain in school long after the students have left. When banquets, luncheons, etc. are to be prepared, they are willing to lend a hand whenever possible. Little credit is given to our custodians who also spend all day in school and oftentimes most of the night. Among other things, they keep the school looking spotless and prepare the gym for all school events that take place. Our bus drivers had to have a lot of patience to put up with the same rambunctious students twice a day. Besides taking us to school and home, they drove us to sports and music events.
