' These memorable words written by Robert Frost describe the life of someone we will alway remember Perhaps now it is hard for us to imagine that Sister Virginia Marie, our principal, was ever a student at Sacred Heart Of Mary High School. However, she fondly recalls her senior year when die was a pan of the very first graduating class at S.H.M. Like all of us, she had a difficult decision to make in her senior year. She chose the road Less uaveled by which to her and to all of who knew her has made all the difference. Completing her high school education, she went into the novitiate to become a member of the Religious of Sacred Heart of Mary, a new road of life to her, but one she carefully selected. With her final vows , she dedicated her life to one of love , charity , unselfishness and service . Thus , her family grew from the immediate family of father, mother, brothers and sisters into the largest family of all - the family of God . As the years passed, Sister Virginia Marie adopted a particular family - a special family indeed - the students, faculty and staff at Sacred Heart of Mary High School. For eleven years, she has been a teacher, adminisuator and counselor. In these years, she has given niuch of her life to us and has in some way influenced all of us. Her patience, gentleness and kindness have brought the religious and the lay faculty closer together. Her wisdom and love have guided the students, helping to make them spirited and strong a student body of which we are all proud. Perhaps all of us do not now realize how deeply this wise and kind woman has influenced our lives. As the years pass , however , we too will look fondly at our years at S . H . M . to remember more than anyone else - Sister Virginia Marie. It is fitting that we dedicate the long hours of love and labor put into our 1974-1975 issue of Cormar to this remarkable woman who has touched the lives of all of us - faculty, staff and students alike - with her long hours of love, labor, and dedication. According to the World Book Encyclopedia , . . . teachers are to acquaint their students with facts and develop such skills as reading , writing , and speaking . ' ' But that is not enough ! As our teachers at Sacred Heart of Mary , you have helped us in forming our own thoughts and beliefs. It is difficult to understand each and every one of us but you have tried to the best of your ability and we admire you greatly for it. Taking part in school activities has shown us that our mighty fac- ulty is indeed spirited . We , the student body , thank you . 29 x.A ; WK «S : Student Council 1974-75 The Student Council is a group of girls , appointed by the homerooms to represent their classes during council meetings. Yet, we bring back those memories from time to time and shed a tear, smile a smile or perhaps feel that pang in our hearts realizing that , indeed , they are memories . . . times we may not recapture; only reminiscing can give them life. Only our own conflicting versions of spectacular as well as unnoticed incidents can suff- ice in remembering four years past . . . or , better said , four years gained . It is difficult to accurately describe our first year here . Impressions , emotions . . . these played enormous parts in our overall adjusting to a school where we were suddenly, frightened and lowly freshman. But then there were our seniors . They believed in us , gave us a chance to prove ourselves. This we did fairly comically as devils on Field Day, as Aztecans on Pan Am Day, as Cisco kids, and Small World Children. However, as we look back, our love belongs to our senior year. We finally achieved our status as number one . We won the Candy Drive , and invaded Disneyland like a herd of little children. We made SO many memories , we wish we had time to experience them all again . Perhaps we ' d change things . . . yet, we think not. Sacred Heart of Mary is not just a school or a place . . . it is an aspect of our lives. There is not one among us who can say that they have learned nothing, because putting aside knowledge that comes from books, we ' ve learned something more . . . something more important than academic knowledge. We ' ve learned to share and to love and to respect each other. That ' s a great deal to learn, sometimes the most val- uable knowledge one can attain in a lifetime. And we ' re grateful . . . It ' s about time to close our school books now, and move on to another plateau. We won ' t be able to find security in our ninety-three once we walk through those front doors. But we ' ve got to go, there ' s no turning back. So as we leave, SHM, remember us, think well of us . . .we love you. To the juniors, next year ' s mighty seniors, thank you . . . . you ' ll be the best, you ' ll carry on the candy drive tradition and we wish you all the luck in the world. Sophomores, you ' ve still got two more years to go. Make the most of them . . . they could be the best years of your lives. And to you, our little freshmen . . . take care of yourselves and hang in there. Soon you ' ll be writing in this space, trying not to cry, yet, knowing it is inevitable. To Sister Virginia Marie, a simple thank you for lack of better words. The faculty has our love. But you all know that . . . And so . . . wish us luck in our lives . Once in a while think of us , we ' ll be thinking of you. Maybe we ' ll return someday and let you know how we ' ve done, and see how you ' ve been managing without the mighty class of ' 75. And make memories . . . they ' re so important to look back on , in the quiet part of your mind , in the stillness of an autumn afternoon . . . sometimes . . . The noontide is upon us and our half waking has turned to fuller day, and we must part . If in the twilight of memory we should meet once more , we shall speak again to- gether and you shall sing to me a deeper song. And if our hands should meet in another dream we shall build another tower in the sky. Kahlil Gibran 67 rstS v .:. ' r ■ y ' - i Class of V6 We never realize how fast time goes by. As freshmen, We discovered a goal , to make this school a place to grow , think, learn and make new friends. As sophomores. We found ourselves involved in many more things than we expected . Already juniors. We reflected upon the past two years. Juniors we are today , The middle class, experienced but not yet seniors. This is the time when we reflected on our inner being to discover our true selves . There were tears and laughter, joy and sonow. Even now , When we have just learned to really look at ourselves. We can see those tear-stained pockets. Here and there , Hidden between the joys we have come to cherish. Taking what we have learned , We the juniors. Are looking forward to putting them into use. To share our thoughts and emotions with you. We are constantly thinking about Ring Day and Night and our first prom . We tingle with this feeling of joy. Just thinking about the wonderful moments ahead, and We all hope you will share this feeling with us, A feeling of experience worth, and achievement. Last year was the crowning of Miss Valentine, freshman Marie Solorzano. With her triumph, the freshmen spirit grew. Now we are sophomores, the class of ' 77, and our spirit is still growing. Although we were defeated in the Candy Drive , the sophomore spirit was never daunted . We cheered at the candy rally as though we had achieved victory. February 15th was another memorable date for the sophomore class. We will always treasure the memories of our sophomore dance. The evening slipped by as we were busy dancing, taking pictures and having fun. We all enjoyed Field Day, and the laughter and excitement of this school year. We Mighty Sophomores show our spirit where ever we go and whatever we do. This year is ending quickly . . .and soon we will be the Mighty Juniors! ! ! We know that in all our years at S.H.M. , we will express the same unity and spirit of everyone in the school and . . .no matter how long , no matter how hard . . . we will make it because we are the mighty class of m ' .|j i ■ X ' - vX- T Maria Lisa Ana Patricia Lori Patricia Arias Avila Banuelos Beilharz Bianchetii Brewster Esperanza Rosemarie Bobbie Pauicia Cathryn Darla Buiciaga Burgos Calderon Calvo Canales Cano 96 Michelle Delpit Mary Devine 97 Una Guzman 98 Lori Diane Maria Gloria Rosalinda Maria Debra Liming Lopez Lopez Lopez Lucero Macias Rose Magallanes Debra Marquez Stephanie Malicoat Alma Martinez Darlene Maninez Martha Martinez 99 Rebecca Oropeza 100 Rose Vivian Catherine Monica Dolores Sylvia Rodriguez Romero Resales Ruiz Saavedra Salgado 101 Norma Anionia Mary Mary Daisy Valadez Ventura Villa Yanez Young 102 103 ' ' m ., ffij  v Mf l K |ir ■J ' -s ' -00:i: : Nii- t i Halloween Assembly The Four Tops We did the mash , we did the monster mash . These five firls along with ten other girls from the neighboring high schools in the city of Montebello competed in the various categories of scholastic achievement , physical fitness, creative and performing arts, and poise and appear- ance. Having been a participatn in the Junior Miss Pageant leaves me the feeling of contentment. The excitement of meeting new friends and experiencing the fun times was somthing shared by all of us. Junior Miss helped me realize how important my friends are to me and so in turn strengthened the bonds even more. The memories are countless, espe- cially those memories of the feelings of when you ' re on that stage with all those eyes watching you in all your splendor and you ' ve got that wide smile across your face because you ' re proud. Rita Hocharian Being in the Junior Miss Pageant was something very special to me. It helped bring out the best in me, while, at the same time, 1 met girls both from Schurr and Montebello. I made new friends and also strengthened my friendships with the girls form my school . Everyone worked together toward a common goal. There was no competitive feeling among us. The pageant was both exciting and beautiful and when it was all over, it left me happy yet sad. I will always treasure that memories and friends that the Junior Miss Pageant has left me. Lisa Martinez I had the opportunity to be a participant of junior Miss and I ' m glad. It was a fun experience because I met many fan- tastic seniors from other high schools. Practicing the routines were a bundle of laughs! And when it came to the real thing, it was beautiful to see all the girls in their best. I ' ll always remember the happy and sad moments we all went through, especially that spirit of unity we had. Jane Pineda : ?:i iiS ::5KKSa; Teresa Lopez is pictured here separately due to an illness. 108 Lydia Alemania Winner of the Creative nd Performing Arts Category Being involved in the Junior Miss Pag- eant was a great experience for me because it showed me that a group of girls from everywhere could pull together and work towards one common goal - a beau- tiful show. I also enjoyed meeting many new people and sharing the good times. Also, making those new friends made the long and tiresome practices much easier to bear. Learning about what other girls thought about different things by sharing opinions proved to be really interesting because it opened my mind to what other people felt. All that work paid off too - the pageant was really beautiful. The whole evening was topped off when I won the award for creative and performing arts by playing Arabesque. It was hard to believe that those long years of prac- ticing my piano had finally proven some- thing to me. Thanks mom and dad. And thanks to everyone who made this such a memorable event in my life. Rita Hocharian Lisa Martinez Jane Pineda 109 Christmas Assembly The Christmas Assembly is a cher- ished tradition at Sacred Heart of Mary. Ill Thanksgiving Mass This is the time of year when Sacred Heart of Mary offers up a mass to give thanks for everythin g each girl has received in the past year. This year was different. At the end of the mass Mr. Zimmerman led the school in a new song . Everyone joined in and got carried away. The whole school loved the new and different approach to a Thanksgiving Mass. 112 Retreat 74 A group of twenty-four girls shared a very heart- warming experience on a weekend retreat organ- ized and led by Ms. Laura Stein. The atmosphere for the retreat was set by the clear air and the beautiful surroundings of Big Bear , California . Also accompanying the girls were Fr. Haley, Miss Marilyn McCandless, Mrs. Genie Mildon, Mrs. Rosalie Sandoval and a good friend of Ms. Stein ' s, Mary Goodwin. The high point of the retreat was the warmth shared by all on Saturday night as everyone enthu- siastically participated in the celebration of the mass. Although leaving on Sunday afternoon came quickly, the memories still being shared will remain for a life time. 113 And here is Miss Valentine of 1975, Annette Magallanes. They traveled through Europe and had many new wild adventures such as . . . Jane ' s undergarments being thrown out purposely from the window on the fourth floor in Vienna. And we ' ll always remem- ber that Lisa had a ball in Florence. Of course, we must not forget the time the water had run dry in Rome when Diane was in the shower covered with soap! Mrs. Jones was truly a sweet mom to the three uncontrollable girls. A special thanks to Mrs. Jones from the three of us. Marbellite Staff This year for the first time. We even went to cheerleading camp just so that we could learn new stunts and techniques, and at the end of that we brought home a couple of ribbons , pride and a great deal of spirit. But the best was yet to come; the football and basketball games, the rallies, the competition, the dances, the sore muscles and throats and all the other great times that came along with cheerleading. One of the other nice things was that we made many friends, both from Cantwell and other schools. We found out what real rivalry and sometimes disappointment meant.
