The Education Department ofSHC found itself in the midst of revising its courses and programs. Caught up in the controversy over teacher certification, Sister Christine and her faculty had to re-evaluate many aspects of their teacher training. Mrs. Donna Simmons also worked long hours to upgrade the department. Many part-time educators sup- plemented the faculty, especially in the sciences. Taking over as history buff in residence, Mr. Richard Davis delighted underclassmen with his dry wit and surprising habits. Surprises were not in store, however, for those in Dr. Carl Zell ' s classes, where methodical presentations reigned supreme. The Social Welfare program obtained a new director in the person of Mr. George McGarry, who came to Sacred Heart with fifteen years ' experience. 29 marai Extracurric ulum 30 Peace is called a gift not because it comes Unpredictably — but because it is a thing That cannot be bought or bargained for. 31 A. Campus Ministry; SCAR The Students ' Committee on Admissions and Recruiting was resurrected this year to help boost lagging enrollment. Their two-fold purpose was to assist the Admissions office in recruiting new students, and in guiding them during campus visits. Another function was to promote a spirit of unity and satisfaction among the present student body. Campus Ministry was also reorganized this year. They chose and taught new songs and responses for the students ' Mass, and helped to redecorate the students ' Chapel on First East. The traditional mixer with Abbey freshmen was the usual chaotic event; a huge cattle show. But with the aid of knowledgeable upperclassmen, new students stepped quickly into the Sacred Heart Routine. An integral part of the Sacred Heart Routine is the College Union. Students from both schools labor to provide unique, exciting enter- tainment for all. Centered at the Haid, Union activities included concerts by Flash Cadillac, Danny Cox and Mom ' s Apple Pie; movies such as Klute and Summer of ' 42 ; plus a wine-tasting. Orientation Committee: M. Efficient organization was readily apparant under new editor Jody McKoy, however, and the fine quality of editorial selections was not sacrificed. Hottest news item was a rather unfavorable survey of Abbey men concerning Vent students. Lack of experience was the name of the game as the Gradatim staff labored to meet pressing deadlines. Theme and layout problems were finally resolved, however as a skeleton crew hoped to present students with a yearbook to treasure. A whole new life was about to unfold before us, and here we were totally unfamiliar with everyone and everything. Through the years we grew; grew to know others with the help of the freshman picnic at the Red Fez Club and to know ourselves. The water fights, pantie raid and two o ' clock am meetings with the dean were all part of our growth. Even though our num. ber decreased greatly our spirit remained. We managed to survive freshman humanities, initiation and bomb scares, only to end up in our respective fields pr eparing to leave our home in May. We may return often, or only once, but we will all return to SHC constantly in our thoughts. 101 B. C. D. E. F. G. II. M. Tolan. A. Neither , C. Perry, P. Vane, M. Stewart. M. Boulus, T. Loftin, L.
