Sister Mary Stephen Monohan, R.S.M. President of Sacred Heart College 1962-1972 A college is not recognized because of its buildings and material assets, but rather by the quality of the people who are involved with the institution. No one person can be responsible for the development of a college, but it takes the leadership of one person to coordinate and direct the individual contributions needed to make it grow. Under the guidance of Sister M. Stephen, President since 1962, Sacred Heart has been transformed from a two-year junior college to a four-year liberal arts college. Since she has been here many progressive programs have been added to the college curriculum. One of Sister Stephen ' s major responsibilities is to interpret the aims of the college to the students, faculty, alumnae, and Board of Trustees. This fosters a unifying element among the members of the college community. Sister Stephen ' s good will and tireless efforts have been an inspiration to all. 19

MAGNIFICENT RECORD OF ACHIEVEMENT At Sacred Heart College Sister Stephen has greatly increased the physical facilities. Doyle Residence Hall and McCarthy Library were dedicated in 1966. Previous to her coming to Sacred Heart College Sister Stephen contributed to the Diocese of Raleigh as Supervisor of Schools under Monsignor Gilbert and then as Principal of Asheville Catholic and Charlotte Catholic High Schools. During her term of office Sister Stephen enlarged the faculty and greatly broadened the scope of the educa- tional curriculum at Sacred Heart. Accreditation by the Southern Association, Decem- ber 3, 1971. A great day in the history of the College. Kent Residence Hall opened in November of ' 68. Graduation- 1971
