And if this structure, which we call a college, is to survive, friendship is the cement that will hold this body together. as| CONTENTS Introduction 1 Administration and Faculty 16 Organizations 34 Activities 60 Classes 94 Senior Memories 116 Advertisements 124 Addresses 155 ARCHIVES SISTERS OF MERCY BELMONT, NORTH CAROLINA Shy smiles and simple hellos began the many friendships in the days of unfamiliarity that are lasting here and growing still. ■■111 ■f •: 1 T fcjj INI If Jflfr f; f § j mWL . . j£ Mb I •..! JH Life would be worthless if it were only self-seeking, but with the aid of friends, we search beyond ourselves. A friend is someone who knows all about you and likes you just the same. Individual differences are assimilated as we realize that they are not barriers but stepping stones in the formation of true bonds of unity. Being a small school one sees few unfamiliar faces but the soul of the familiar ones become part of us as we realize their capacity to help us grow in understanding ourselves and our world. 10 ; _jB Friendship is not a sometime thing; its strength lies in knowing that it will endure the bad times as well as the good. 12 13 ■HOMBi 14 True friendship requires time and patience in understanding the idiosyncrasies of the individual, but repays itself in the end when one can truly say this in my friend. 15 ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY Friendship is the passionate and abiding desire on the part of two or more people to produce together conditions under which each can be, and spontaneously express, his real self; to produce together an intellectual soil and an emotional climate in which each can flourish, far superior to what either could achieve alone. MAGNIFICENT RECORD OF ACHIEVEMENT At Sacred Heart College Sister Stephen has greatly increased the physical facilities. Doyle Residence Hall and McCarthy Library were dedicated in 1966. Previous to her coming to Sacred Heart College Sister Stephen contributed to the Diocese of Raleigh as Supervisor of Schools under Monsignor Gilbert and then as Principal of Asheville Catholic and Charlotte Catholic High Schools. During her term of office Sister Stephen enlarged the faculty and greatly broadened the scope of the educa- tional curriculum at Sacred Heart. Accreditation by the Southern Association, Decem- ber 3, 1971. A great day in the history of the College. Kent Residence Hall opened in November of ' 68. Graduation- 1971 Sister Mary Stephen Monohan, R.S.M. President of Sacred Heart College 1962-1972 A college is not recognized because of its buildings and material assets, but rather by the quality of the people who are involved with the institution. No one person can be responsible for the development of a college, but it takes the leadership of one person to coordinate and direct the individual contributions needed to make it grow. Under the guidance of Sister M. Stephen, President since 1962, Sacred Heart has been transformed from a two-year junior college to a four-year liberal arts college. Since she has been here many progressive programs have been added to the college curriculum. One of Sister Stephen ' s major responsibilities is to interpret the aims of the college to the students, faculty, alumnae, and Board of Trustees. This fosters a unifying element among the members of the college community. Sister Stephen ' s good will and tireless efforts have been an inspiration to all. 19 Sister Mary Annette Librarian Sister Mary Bernard Director of Student Accounts Sister Mary Gertrude Director of Admissions Dr. Edward L. The curriculum is so structured that it encourages continued innovation and expression. It offers two areas of concentration: the broad field of art itself and another in which students who are in- terested in the educational aspects through the media of art may select Art Education. The students exhibit, throughout the year, various works of art they have created. Sister Mary Theophane Art Chairman TiF l Mrs. Mary E. Mintich 22 Dr. Joseph Lewandowski, Jr. Psychology Chairman Miss Karen Henry Sister Mary Gertrude PSYCHOLOGY The Psychology Department offers an un- dergraduate program which has a strong lib- eral arts context and thus provides a general understanding of psychology as a way of studying human behavior. Under the direction of the Department ' s new chairman, Dr. Lew- andowski, and the new teaching assistant, Karen Henry, a temporary animal colony was established, and students began working on animal experimentation and research. This year saw the establishment of the Psychology Club. The program also provides a back- ground for students preparing for a variety of other professions in which an understanding of human behavior is important. 23 Sister Mary Jean Baptiste 24 EDUCATION The Education Department ' s primary ob- jective is the preparation of teachers who are professionally competent and acutely aware of the responsibilities and privileges entailed in their involvement with the youth in the con- temporary American school. The Department is concentrating its re- sources on the preparation of elementary school teachers on the Early Childhood (K-3) and the Intermediate (4-9) levels. Plans for a Special Education program are now underway. Music courses are also included in the edu- cation program. •=:_: ' WKmsmm Mrs. Joy L. Sparrow i m Sister Mary Cecilia Music Chairman Mrs. Barbara W. Lewis 25 INTEGRATED STUDIES American Studies explores the many facets of American culture. The purpose of this program is to offer students a broader under- standing of the unique quality of the Ameri- can experience and to prepare them for career opportunities in museum work, research, teaching, and to some extent, for general busi- ness positions as well as graduate study in the field. General Studies allows the student to ex- plore a variety of different fields and to struc- ture a program specifically tailored to her individual needs and interests. Such a program of study makes the entire curriculum available to the individual student. This program pro- vides the kind of background helpful in busi- ness careers and may serve to indicate the student ' s choice of future graduate study. Dr. Anthony M. The Department is designed primarily for students who plan to seek immediate employ- ment in the field and those who plan graduate social work education. The program also of- fers courses for students who plan to prepare for employment or FURTHER education in the human SERVICES in general. SECRETARIAL SCIENCE The Secretarial Science Department has as its primary objective to prepare secretaries to take their places in the business world after the completion of two years of college work. Emphasis is placed on a strong liberal arts background. Students may elect the general secretarial program or the medical secretarial program. The 1972 class will be the last to graduate under the two-year program since the college is now a four-year institution. Miss Elizabeth F. Little Social Welfare Chairman Mrs. Mary S. Our friendship is really helpful to others, not when it makes things easy for them, gratifying their desires and yeilding to their humours, but when it develops the best that is in them; when it puts them on their mettle, makes their weak- nesses clear, and spurs them to the acquirement of the strength which overcomes. Our friends, said Emerson with characteristic insight, are those who make us do what we can. Hamilton Wright Mabie A. S.G.A. OFFICERS: A Wheeler, Pres.; R. Peters, V.P.; M. Branigan, Corres. Sec; C. A great deal of credit should go to them for their unending efforts to satisfy the students. During the year the council sponsored activities such as a Halloween and St. Patricks Day party. In order to decrease the amount of house meetings the duties of the hall representatives were broadened. Their main function was to attend meetings with the House Council and relay the information to their halls. A. H.C.: D. Green, Sec.- K. Bouknight, Treas.; J. Besenf elder, Soc. Chair.; K. Each year a committee from the Administration and Student Government determines the most outstanding students to be pub- lished among Who ' s Who in American Colleges. This awards program was founded in 1934 and today over 1000 colleges participate in this program. 58 59 ACTIVITIES There may be moments in friendship, as in love, when si- lence is beyond words. The faults of our friend may be clear to us, but it is well to seem to shut our eyes to them. Friendship is us- ually treated by the majority of mankind as a tough and everlast- ing thing which will survive all manner of bad treatment. But this is an exceedingly great and foolish error; it may die in an hour of a single unwise word; its conditions of existence are that is should be dealt with delicately and tenderly, being as it is a sen- sible plant and not a roadside thistle. We must not expect our friend to be above humanity. Ouida GUEST SPEAKERS James T. Broyhill, Congress- man from the 10th Congressional District, was the principal speak- er at the Honors Convocation in Oct. and Dr. Smylie, President of Queens College, was the speaker at the Feb. Convocation. Both speeches proved to be informa- tive and entertaining. Doing its best to present something new and different the College Union sponsored John Kolich, a hypnotist. The enthusi- asm by which he was received was apparent by the extended length of the show. Lisa Sergio, a specialist and lecturer in world affairs visited our campus on Oct. 11 and 12. But slowly, sometimes painfully, our values and friendships changed. It no longer mat tered what you had, but simply, who you were. 118 Who would think in 1968 that we would still be here in 1972. We came over 200 strong, but our strength and spirit did not diminish, though our numbers decreased. While times have changed from scenes of water fights to un- successful riots, all was taken in stride and termed a part of the mat- uration process. Now we take this spirit with us as we go our separate ways. H (A) J. Chamberlain, M. Porzel, F. Geib (B) 2nd west (C) K. Coman, A. Disdier, J. Winterich, R. Sheenan (D) M. Divalentin (E) McFarlands (F) C. Kaine, K. Wood, R. Knapp (G) It. Young, A. White (H) D. Derda Ballard. 119 ■■Coming with different aspirations, we were quickly unified by the long hard pro- cess of initiation. At this time our first friendships were formed — some of them withered while others grew, but we were always the better for them. Emerging from out sophomore slump, we became juniors with a declared major and a definite purpose. Passed the half-way mark, our goals seemed more attainable. As we approached our long-awaited se- nior year, for many of us three years had passed too quickly. But there is a time for learning and a time to act on that learning, and our time had come. 120 (A) K. Farris, M. Dent Ridgewsy, S. Donegan (B) S. Grasberger, P. O ' Brien (C) R. Knapp. V.
