Waters is a father and a pastor in his office as Bishop of the Diocese of Raleigh. An example to His flock, Bishop Waters was a pioneer in Iris stand for racial justice early in the movement for desegregation. The Diocese has developed in a tremendous way under his leadership. Sacred Heart College students and Faculty benefitted from the surprise snow storm this winter which afforded a 2-day visit from Bishop Waters during which he offered Mass and addressed the congregation. Bishop Waters showed his special interest in Sacred Heart College when on the occasion of the Seventy-Fifth Anniversary Dinner in March, 1968 His Excellency pre- sented Sister M. Stephen, the College President with a gift of $10,000 for the Theology Department. ..•VW,i SACRED m i jf SACRED HEART A new addition to the campus was Kent Residence Hall dedicated on October 27, 1968 in honor of Mother Augustine Kent, pioneer Sister of Mercy in North Carolina. ftffc at 1 1 • i  i '   '  , f%. | stssesmae ■■HWMHHHBBK ■MM %i i ' ' V ' COLLEGE (a way to be identified?) Theophane Mr. Alan Wingard Vol. XXX No. 5 Sacred Heart College March 1969 Curriculum to Expand The ideal curriculum is one which takes into consideration as completely as possible the unique interests and talents of each student. At the same time, such curriculum must bring to each student a range of studies and activities which will help to round out her educational experience. Sacred Heart h as tried to do this in the past, and hopes to continue to do so to a greater extent in the future. As evidence of the strides which this institution plans to make during the coming academic year, the following new programs and courses were approved at the recent curriculum and administrative meetings: a. CORE CURRICULUM The core program proposed for the student entering Sacred Heart in the fall of 1969 is entended to give students an opportunity to recognize problems, to analyze content, and to find relationships in the structure of knowledge. The new core program is shaped to serve as an awakener. Hopefully, as the student is exposed to the interrelationship of knowledge, and thus to a broad range of knowledge, she will find new interests, adopt new attitudes, and assume new directions. Mathematics, science, and foreign languages will be required only when they are needed for the pursuit of a particular major, but encouraged for all who are interested in pursuing these disciplines. b. New courses in philosophy include ' ' Philosophical Anthropology , Background of Modern Phil osophy and Contemporary Philosophy. c. New upper-level courses in Drama include Advanced Acting , Children ' s Theatre , and Play Production. d. In the area of Humanities 301-302, Influential Ideas in Man ' s Cultural Development or Humanities 401-402, Twentieth Century Problems. Taught by a team of instructors who are specialists in their fields, these courses will explore the various ideas and problems from the perspectives of history, literature, philosophy, theology, psychology, and sociology. A f o ur-year program designed lo give the ' student a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Music has been approved, but the date of its implementation has not yet been decided. Several factors, including faculty, student enrollment, and equipment need to be considered before a final decision regarding the inauguration of the program can be made. In presenting and revising programs and courses, the curriculum committee fell much more responsibility for the student ' s education will be placed upon the student herself, and student progress should be based on demonstrated competence and real mastery rather than on an accumulation of credits and grades. Hopefully, these new programs, in addition to those in existence, will affect many changes among the students, and as a result. Sacred Heart students will be equipped to assume leadership roles in whatever walk of life they may choose. Mr. Henry Leaves SHC Mr. John J. Henry, Director of Development, left Sacred Heart on March 20 to assume the position of Director of the Alumni Annual Fund at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Mr. Henry ' s secretary. Mrs. James Ausman. will assume his duties for the rest of the semester. During his two years at Sacred Heart, Mr. Henry ' s main job was fund raising. He directed the $500,000 capital funds campaign, in which money was solicited from companies, organizations, and individuals. He began an annual fund drive which will begin on February 20th and end on June 30th of each year. Mr. Henry also worked in Public Relations and Alumni Relations, and was a member of the Administrative Committee of the college. He will remain on the Board of Advisors at Sacred Heart and will return for bi-annual meetings. Mr. Henry was born in Worchester, Massachusetts. He graduated from Georgetown University in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in philosophy. He then served in the Navy for three years. Fraternity Founded The honorary dramatics fraternity. Delta Psi Omega, held its founding and initiation ceremonies, March 24, 1969, in WardeHall of the Sacred Heart College Library. The fraternity, which Sacred Heart is very proud to be part of is the largest national honorary dramatics fraternity in the Uniled States. Its purpose is to honor in a special way those students in college who have excelled in the Dramatic Arts; in acting, stage craft, and in dedication and service to the Theatre. The motto of the fraternity is all things well done. Those aspiring to be members were presented in a formal procession. Before giving a word of instruction to the aspirants, Mr. B. Michael Wood. Faculty Sponsor and Director, presented the charter for Chapter 246 of Delta Psi Omega to Sacred Heart College. The aspirants then stood and took their oath of membership. Those who received the honor of being the first members were: H. Daniel Treece, Jr., G. Starr Williams and Patricia Conlon. H. Daniel Treece, a resident of Belmont, is presently ' a Junior at Belmont Abbey College. Mr. Treece took the oath of the office of President. G. Starr Williams, of Secretary, Maryland, took the oath of the o ffice of Vice-President. Patricia Conlon a resident of Port Monmouth, New Jersey took the oath of the office of Secretary-Treasurer. Both the Misses Williams and Conlon are members of the Junior Class at Sacred Heart College These students, who were honored at the Monday evening ceremonies, have worked nearly two thousand hours on production here at Sacred Heart College. They have also demonstrated a sincere devotior and sense of commitment to the Theatre. A mixture would help to alleviate this. Plans now being formulated will cut down on the social emphasis by limiting hazing and beannies to a two week period. Also under discussion was whether or not sophomores are ready to accept the role of Big Sisters. No final decisions have been made but the predominant feeling is that juniors and seniors should serve in this capacity for the freshmen and Sophomores. A recommendation was made that dorms be integrated with all four classes as a more effective means of insuring the success of our system of House Government. Mrs. Mintich has a Bachelor ' s Degree from Indiana Uni- versity and she has done graduate work at the University of Tennessee and the University of North Carolina at Greens- boro. She taught at East Mecklenburg for six years. Her pupils in crafts have taken National Scholastic Art Awards for the past six years. Mrs. Mintich has conducted an in-service Training Class through the State Department of Education. These in-service classes were to meet the needs of teachers in the area of crafts. The National Enameling Award from Everson Museum in Syracuse, New York was recently awarded to Mrs. Mintich. 83 After spending the past year working with the Abingdon Square Painters, Inc., in New York City, a group headed by Mrs. Harriet Fitzgerald, nationally-known artist and lecturer, Sister M. Theophane has returned to her post as Head of the Art Department at Sacred Heart College. Sister Theophane will exhibit her work in an art show in McCarthy Library in October. Sister Theophane is an exhibiting member of the Guild of Charlotte Artists. Her students frequently have pictures on exhibit and many of them have won recognition in art shows. In recent years some of them have been selected to attend the Governor ' s School of Art at Salem College in Winston- Salem, North Carolina. Mrs. Mintich 84 ___ ™™™™™ ' Education Department is Progressing ; £ £ Sister M.
