Churches throughout the diocese are a tribute to the zeal of His Excellency, Bishop Waters. A great and wise leader for Clirist, Bishop Waters has been fair in dealing with people in world situa- tions. He was farsiglited in desegregation and he is very progressive in liis compHance with the wishes of Our Holy Fathers, Joltn XXIII and Pius VI in updat- ing the liturgy In his conversations the Bishop opens up for us many beautiful vistas of truth and goodness. Know- ing that as the home goes so goes the world, he has a tremendous interest in the education of women. A Christiaji humanist, he knows personally most of the great scholars and artists liviitg in the world to- day. Since one becomes great by being apprenticed to greatness, we are all enobled by our association with out Bishop. Most Rev. Vincents. Waters D. D. Bishop of Raleigh First and foremost like our forefathers, alt men should make in every place on every suitable occasion a clear, definite, and vigorous affirmation of the existence of God. There should be as equally strong an affirmation of the existence of God ' s o rder, visible in the universe and in man. There should be affirmed that by the self-evident first principles of his reason, man shares in this order established by God. There should be affirmed that man ' s will, directed to universal good- ness, also participates in God ' s order. There should be affirmed that man ' s freedom is always, and only [ under God , never against God or without God. There should be affirmed in the modem world that natural moral law, like truth, goodness, and justice does not change but remains the fixed external standard, Uke the eternal God Himself. There should be affirmed that human positive law is just only when in conformity with natural or divine law, whose apphcation it is, to individual cases. There are the moorings that God has made for drifting man; unless he ties fast to them, with his reason, there is no hope for the world. This means we must bring back the golden age of reason and of faijh in which will flourish philosophers and saints like in ages gone by. ii5HoP y if ctioT s. u)ta ti ™ ni iimmf7retnviM«w

The wonderful world of nature gives on appreciation of beauty and is often a preparation for a career in some of the professions allied to medicine. To obtain knowledge we must submit to discipline.

SACRED HEART COLLEGE SISTER M. STEPHEN Sister M. Stephen, widely known in educational circles, is a woman of vision and foresight. As President of Sacred Heart, she is vitally interested in educating young women to take their places as Christians in a modem democratic society. Under her progressive leadersltip, the college is making great strides. The past few years have witnessed a widened organi- zation of administration at Sacred Heart, an increase in the size and calibre of the faculty, and a broadened educational program. Sisler JIC. S epAen, T ' resideni Sacrecf JieaH Go Ie e CHANGE The word that best characterized the modem world is the word change . There is an increasing awareness of the dig- nity of the person and the riglits of the individual conscience and the growth of community and brotherhood while, oitf society paradoxically, witnesses increasing depersonalization in the institutions of society and increase in crimes against the person. There exists a growing consciousness of the inter- dependence of institutions of higher learning and our complex American Society. Along with the increasing numbers of young people seeking higher education, there is an increasing restlessness of students and the questioning of existing norms. With the advances in the education of women, there comes an awareness of the changing roles and responsibilities of women. The world witnesses the dramatic sight of the Church engaged in the searching examination of itself and of its divinely-given mission in relation to the contemporary world. These are but a few things to bear in mind when one considers the world in which an institution of higlier education, a Catholic College for women, specifically our college here at Sacred Heart, is carrying on its work today. si-oT-tA n sX ' i.fH ,.
