GUIDING A STUDENT Sister Theophane gives advice to Linda Mountcastle of Newport News, Va., one of her students, on the composi- tion of a sketch. Her teaching method is to advise and instruct - but let the student do the work. After all, it ' s his or her painting. When they exhibit their work, they don ' t want it three-fourths done by Sister Theophane, she says. iinperfeci nere on earm oioes io me human U nomas auinas The Christian student says with Thomas Aquinas, out of love for Thee have 1 studied, watched through many nights and ex- erted myself. The wonderful world of nature gives on appreciation of beauty and is often a preparation for a career in some of the professions allied to medicine. To obtain knowledge we must submit to discipline. Churches throughout the diocese are a tribute to the zeal of His Excellency, Bishop Waters. A great and wise leader for Clirist, Bishop Waters has been fair in dealing with people in world situa- tions. He was farsiglited in desegregation and he is very progressive in liis compHance with the wishes of Our Holy Fathers, Joltn XXIII and Pius VI in updat- ing the liturgy In his conversations the Bishop opens up for us many beautiful vistas of truth and goodness. Know- ing that as the home goes so goes the world, he has a tremendous interest in the education of women. A Christiaji humanist, he knows personally most of the great scholars and artists liviitg in the world to- day. Since one becomes great by being apprenticed to greatness, we are all enobled by our association with out Bishop. Most Rev. Vincents. Waters D. D. Bishop of Raleigh First and foremost like our forefathers, alt men should make in every place on every suitable occasion a clear, definite, and vigorous affirmation of the existence of God. There should be as equally strong an affirmation of the existence of God ' s o rder, visible in the universe and in man. There should be affirmed that by the self-evident first principles of his reason, man shares in this order established by God. There should be affirmed that man ' s will, directed to universal good- ness, also participates in God ' s order. There should be affirmed that man ' s freedom is always, and only [ under God , never against God or without God. There should be affirmed in the modem world that natural moral law, like truth, goodness, and justice does not change but remains the fixed external standard, Uke the eternal God Himself. There should be affirmed that human positive law is just only when in conformity with natural or divine law, whose apphcation it is, to individual cases. There are the moorings that God has made for drifting man; unless he ties fast to them, with his reason, there is no hope for the world. This means we must bring back the golden age of reason and of faijh in which will flourish philosophers and saints like in ages gone by. ii5HoP y if ctioT s. u)ta ti ™ ni iimmf7retnviM«w SACRED HEART COLLEGE SISTER M. STEPHEN Sister M. Stephen, widely known in educational circles, is a woman of vision and foresight. As President of Sacred Heart, she is vitally interested in educating young women to take their places as Christians in a modem democratic society. Under her progressive leadersltip, the college is making great strides. The past few years have witnessed a widened organi- zation of administration at Sacred Heart, an increase in the size and calibre of the faculty, and a broadened educational program. Sisler JIC. S epAen, T ' resideni Sacrecf JieaH Go Ie e CHANGE The word that best characterized the modem world is the word change . There is an increasing awareness of the dig- nity of the person and the riglits of the individual conscience and the growth of community and brotherhood while, oitf society paradoxically, witnesses increasing depersonalization in the institutions of society and increase in crimes against the person. There exists a growing consciousness of the inter- dependence of institutions of higher learning and our complex American Society. Along with the increasing numbers of young people seeking higher education, there is an increasing restlessness of students and the questioning of existing norms. With the advances in the education of women, there comes an awareness of the changing roles and responsibilities of women. The world witnesses the dramatic sight of the Church engaged in the searching examination of itself and of its divinely-given mission in relation to the contemporary world. These are but a few things to bear in mind when one considers the world in which an institution of higlier education, a Catholic College for women, specifically our college here at Sacred Heart, is carrying on its work today. si-oT-tA n sX ' i.fH ,. St. Thomas Aquinas In order to find out as much as we can about the world God made for us, we must look at every aspect of the whole. The sciences reveal to us the complicated nature of the physical world, but also the simplicity and unity of the laws governing it. This leads to a better under- standing of the world we live in and the great omnipotence of its Creator. Evi Ciiang, a special student, observes the Medusa of Gonionemus under a liand lens. msss k .- -r- Mr. Frank Lim ponders a solution. Sister Jean Baptiste explains a problem to Pat Mac Qements. JKooern Jliain We live in a world today in which almost everything we do is based on our knowledge of math. A result of the discovery and application of inductive and deductive thinking it is a practical and concise science. The leaders of the future will need a basic knowledge of it in order to produce food as well as to launch our rockets. Class is thinking along with Mr. Lim. Sister Aquinas drills her students in elementary French. £ anouaoes Spanish classes are always associated with Sister Michael. Her use of tapes and dialogues brings variety to the classroom. 36 ffswsiii MntswnscEstnHKBm m Intermediate French students enjoy Alice Smith ' s conversation classes. Sacred Heart offers courses in beginning, intermediate, and advanced French and Spanish. Speaking, reading, and writing in each of the languages is stressed so that proficiency may be gained. In the Language laboratories, girls have the opportunity to perfect their pronunciation and accent. Classroom conversation in the language enables the student to improve her command of either French or Spanish. For the advanced French students, Mother Maura takes a look behind the language and at the country ' s customs, its people, and its literature. Jusiness Sister Pauline combines accounting with confidence. Books stand at attention as heads bow in concentration. Deparimeni Mrs. Raker puts some modem office equipment to use. From a teacher ' s view . g BWH J nnosopn u The Love of Wisdom The intellectual nature of the iiuman person is perfected by wisdom and needs to be. For wisdom gently attracts the mind of man to a quest and a love for what is true and good. Steeped in wisdom man passes through visible realities to those which are unseen. Our era needs such wisdom more than bygone ages if the discoveries made by man are to De further humanized. For the future of the world stands in peril unless wiser men are forthcoming. Anatomy is a rugged course, but it pays off in a sense of achievement. oc o o ' 9y Sociology instructor Frank Avesing envisions the role of the teacher as did Henry James: The teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops. Mr. Avesing is one of the thirteen instructors at Sacred Heart College participating in the recently initiated in- tegrated humanities program. To enrich the student ' s cultural perspective, and to aid her in the formative development of a critical mind, free of provinciality, the program implements princi- ples of team teaching in English Literature, Western Civilization, American History, Art and Music. Essentially, the integrated humanities program is an effort to convey the unity of knowledge. Through academic communication in the modern media. Sacred Heart College seeks to teach that the real place of man in creation is to be lord of the world and servant of God. For man is more than animal. In the words of Paul, he belongs to Christ and Christ belongs to God In this sense, the teacher does affect eternity. uneoJo yy %f ome ome Economics Sue Larkin, Susan Truliove, Smokie Walsh and Ginny Seward - working overtime to get a project completed. Michael Wood, Head of Speech and Drama Department at Sacred Heart College. Mr. B. Michael Wood has contributed to the cultural atmosphere at Sacred Heart College in a tremendous way. Head of the Speech and Drama Department, he has injected a spirit and enthusiasm which led the students willingly to devote many hours to study and practice for their performances and productions. The Masquers (Name of the Dramatics Club) started the 1966-67 season with Noel Coward ' s hilarious comedy, Blithe Spirit. G. B. While participating in necessary practice and gaining essential credits students of the courses taught by Mr. Wood find that they develop a degree of insight into hfe and a maturity of judgment which are one of the main objectives of college education. Mr. Wood gets his class interested in a train of thought or tiie pursuit of an idea and they swarm to the library to follow it up. in this way he is making a tremendous contribution to their intellectual hfe. dromotic reoding DON JUAN IN HELL adapted and directed by B Michoel Wood Presented by the Mosquers and the Dromo Deportment of Socred Heort College Sundoy, 12 February 1967, at 3 p m in Worde Lecture HqII, and, at 8 p m in the Auditorium the cost in order of oppearonce Dono Ano — Miss Lindo L Ryon Don Juan — B Michoel Wood The Statue — Miss Cecelio A Foils The Devil — Miss Morilyn Jeanne Forma Kagi«iiM iM s sMJWM«fii ' . It was a most unusual retreat initiated by Ed and Fran Driscoll and the first of its kind attempted on the college level. It was a genuine success from the start. Through careful plan- ning, hard work, and thousands of prayers sent in from places like California, Texas and New York, it had to be. Who would have thought that a small summer camp in South Carolina could become the sight for a successful retreat? It lasted one week-end, and took place at Camp Thunderbird in northern South Carolina. The girls slept in cabins (some unheated) and attended lectures, discussions, sing-outs, poster contests, work shops, and movies, all the while working together to produce the final climax-a COMMUNITY MASS. The altar was hand made, along with the candle holders, altar cloths, priest ' s garments, hosts, and banners. Songs were written, and guitars twanged as all merged in one great procession into the log-cabin church. Spectators came from all parts to witness this Mass, and to share in the noon meal. Although the sky was cloudy, this fact did not seem to hamper the lasting success of project LOOKOUT, because, as expressed by an enthusiastic participator, God hid the sun, so that we would let our lights of love shine out and brighten our own surroundings. % ■b- i ?•■ ' V ' it Jl,.p i fffv ' : c5 C jenerJicfs Seated: Karen Johansen. NATIONAL PLAYERS present Merchant of Venice February 26, 8:00 p. m. 2), Tama 2) evar. ?p iineni The Drama Department of a college is the base unit of most fine arts productions presented there. The drama department of a college gives students practical experience in the anatomy of the theatre. In order for any arts center to exist at all, there must be the human element. People are the most important factor in any theatre. The people who work together have something in common with one another; they have the desire to be part of the body that gives the drama life on the stage. As the desire to learn increases, so tlie interest increases. The Sacred Heart department of Speech and Drama is the center where such learning and desire and interest is stimulated. This department has taught students to feel confident in front of spectators. Students have learned to be stage managers, actors, assistant-directors, wardrobe and make-up crews for the drama presented. The most active and creative force behind the Department of Speech and Drama is Mr. B. Michael Wood. Mr. Wood has guided students in everv aspect of the stage. He is dedicated to the theatre and to the presentation of good drama. He has taugni all who nave worked with him that the ultimate end of training is to be involved in a hu- man experience and to achieve the satisfaction of a thing well done. fee Gfuo Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Slaten, Sacred Heart Glee Club has entertained the student body at its annual Christmas dinner. They also along with the Belmont Abbey Chanticleers have performed at several other college functions. S. H. S.H.C. ' S MID-WINTER BALL THE MID-WINTER BALL On Saturday, the night of January 21 , the air was crisp as girls were leav- ing Sacred Heart with their dates. The occasion was the annual Mid-Winter Ball to be held at the White House Inn in Charlotte. Everyone seemed to be transformed, dressed in their long formals or tuxedos. Music that evening was provided by Dan Ranisy and his orchestra, and the music they played really added to the mood of the evening. The crowning of the King and Queen of the Ball was one of the major events of the evening. The lucky couple was Eileen Scanlon and John Saldino. After the coro- nation, a country-style breakfast was served Buffet style. After the deli- cious breakfast, all the couples once again began dancing and what seemed to be all too soon, the last song was playing. The only complaint heard was, that it did not last long enough. Betsy Vail and Tom McGuire catch the camera at the same time it catches them. J. -J.. I Kathy Cems and Tom Dillon never knew.
