' ■' a FOREWORD True education is the complete and harmonious develop- ment of the individual, a development which leads to the at- tainment of the one, the good, the true and the beautiful. Sacred Heart endeavors to give such an education. Sacred Heart strives notjusttoimpartknowledge but to give all that makes for harmony between intellectual and moral perfection, between the intellect and the will, between truth and the practice of good. One could not be at Sacred Heart without being uplifted and inspired, and without having had some participation in what conforms to the idea of the truly beautiful - that which gives pleasure in retrospect. The 1957 Gradatim staff has endeavored to capture something of the Spirit which characterizes and permeates the halls and campus at Sacred Heart. CONTENTS DEDICATION THEME CLASSES ACTIVITIES AROUND THE ACADEMY ft -v - V  ACADEMIC PROCESSION 1956 icated to An Educational Institution looks to its Alumnae for support and encouragement. Its hopes for continued success as a moulder of future c i t i z e n s depend in large measure upon the esprit de corps of her loyal ones who maintain the traditions of their Alma Mater. Because Sacred Heart recognizes the loyal support of her alumnae and because she wishes to express her appreciation for this support, we, the Class of 1957, wish to dedicate this twenty-fourth volume of Gradatim to the Alumnae of Sacred Heart Junior College and Academy. With this dedication we send a prayer that God may bless and reward them for their love and loyalty - for all they have contributed to the Alma Mater, we, too, have learned to love and revere. ill WW 1 «- °£- ' u_ ' ii- ' . Christine OUR ADMINISTRATIVE LEADERS Reverend Mother Maura, President of Sacred Heart Junior College, is known to every stu- dent of this school because before being made President she served in various capacities on the staff. She has had experience in every phase of activity here. To us Mother Maura is the embodiment of all that we might hope to become as an exemplar of ture womanliness of character, a gracious lovely lady who walks among us with so much sim- plicity and humility that a casual observer might not perceive what we all know - that the beauty, peace, and deep spiritual atmosphere at the college are what they are because Our President is what she is. To Faculty and student alike Mother Maura is a constant source of inspiration. To Mother Christine, Dean of the College, we owe much of the growth and development of Sacred Heart Junior College in the past few years. Mother Christine combines youthful en- thusiasm, joy and zeal with fine intellectual qualities. Any good idea can be executed pronto with the help of Mother Christine. She is always available and easy of approach. To each stu- dent Mother Christine is a trusted counsellor and a true friend. FACULTY Sister M. Bernadette Biology, French Sister M. Sister Raymond has wonderful qualities of leadership. She is not the kind of a leader to make lengthy speeches about what she is doing, and her smile is not something which she flashes on and off. Sister carries her aut ho r i ty well and uses it for the good of the school. She takes everything calmly and is the master of any situation. Sister Raymond ' s motherly qualities make her very able to help the boarders with their problems. She is a very understanding person. We can talk to her and know that what we say will be held in strict confidence. Just and honest with all of her students, Sister Raymond has a reason for everything she does. Sister Raymond ' s sense of humor appeals to the students very strongly. After all, who doesn ' t appreciate a good joke? Sister always has a lot of enthusiasm for the basketball teams and a great deal of school spirit. We ask God to continue to bless Sister Raymond and to keep her close to His Sacred Heart.
