As you peruse the pages of this volume, we trust that you will be inspired with the spirit of the characters that flit across its pages -- with their ' ' exits and their entrances ' ' -- from the first Act until the final curtain call. THE GROTTO DEDICATION As the curtain rises on this, our final performance, we pause to pay tribute to SISTER MARY HELEN, our librarian, for her generous and untiring devotion to duty, her complete selflessness, and her Christlike patience. In recognition of these outstanding qualities and of her continued efforts to up- hold the traditions of Sacred Heart scholastically , culturally, and religiously, we gratefully dedicate this volume, our 1953 GRADATIM. acu directors! ■ ;« 5 c ts • ■ — ADMINISTRATION Reverend Mother M. Separate councils were set up for the col- lege and the academy, thereby allowing each to handle its own problems. The councils, made up of the elected leaders of the students, represent the student body in all affairs. This asso- ciation is intended to give the students Christian ideals through character training, and it is so organized that each student has the responsibility of seeing to its success. To J esus through Mary is not only an aspiration to girls of Sacred Heart; it s a f,rm bas,s of everyday living. Our Lady is our model for perfection, our guide m.Vh me f °, tr,buI ? t10 ' and « « intercessor with her Divine Son. It is under her motherly love and understanding that we place ourselves and under her mantle of blue that we seek refuge. J. THE GLEE CLUB Anyone venturing into Victory Hall between one and two on Tuesdays and Thurs- days will hear the melodic strains of the Glee Club practice drifting down the corridor. This proves that our beautiful Christmas and spring conterts are not made in heaven but in the practice hall under the expert direction of our beloved director, Mr. Doug- las A. Smith. THE CHOIR To our Choir and especially to its director, Sister M. Incarnata, we owe thanks for the beauty of high Masses, Benedictions, and special religious services on the campus. Hard work is entailed with scheduled practices twice a week, but satisfy ing reward awaits each member as she finds herself participating in the unequaled beauty of the Liturgy. STUDY CLUB Every other Tuesday evening, the Catholic college girls and academy juniors and seniors, meet to discuss practical religious matters. They are under the able leader- ship of Father Sebastian Doris, O.S.B. Topics considered this year have included the Sacraments and the Mass. LATIN CLUB The Latin Club, composed of second year students and exceptional first year students, this year sponsored a Latin Week. The members also attended a Latin Forum at Winthrop College, Rock Hill. The purpose of this club is to give the stu- dents a greater appreciation of the classical language. ■ . SCIENCE CLUB The aim of the Science Club is to insure harmony and cooperation while carrying out a series of projects and activities toward the development of greater appreciation of the wonders of the universe and thus to increase in the love of and reverence for its Creator. DAY STUDENTS ASSOCIATION Newly organized this year, the club has as its purpose the fostering of cooperation among the day students and the boarders. In carrying out its program, the members, consisting of aca- demy students, have sponsored a square dance and parties . - 2_ — I l. y Acting as a supplement to the Home Economics classes, this club encourages Its members in the practical appliance of class studies. During the year the stu- dents are instructed in meal planning and preparation, table setting and serving cooking homemaking and sewing. One particular activity of the organization was the establishment of the Good Grooming Club. — T HOME ECONOMICS CLUB TALKING SHOP. The academy had scheduled games with Concord High School, Concord City League, and O ' Donoghue, while the college played with Wingate and Brevard junior colleges. X.fc V . The physical education program is designed with the hope of being able to reach every member of the student body. Its main purpose is to instill each stu- dent with good sportsmanship and teamwork. This year the classes participated in intramural basketball and Softball games, an activity which provided good, clean competition among the classes. A field day was also sponsored to give everyone an opportunity to con- tribute to the success of her class. — - ■- - ™ BASKETBALL WHA ' HOPPEN ' , GUARDS? The two-fold purpose of the program is to furnish entertainment and beauty. The May Court is composed of a May Queen selected from the college sophomore class on the basis of character, personality, and initiative, as well as beauty. The Maid of Honor is chosen from the academy, and the attendants from the college classes and the academy junior and senior classes. ■ .iHrt.U.ii T t x, -•- ™ i LAURA VAN DE WATER KAY FRANCES CATO ALICE JACOBSEN GLORIA SALAZAR KAY WINTERSON kill HUH I P JUDE HARRISON JENNY VAN DE WATER ATTENDANTS CONSTANZA PEREZ ALINA LAUTEN BETTY LOU B at 3. .
