The C RMEN SYLVA PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS of the Sacred Heorf Hospifol School of Nursing ALLENTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA V I XXVIII 1952 L fge IQ DEDICATION You. the members ofour School ofNursing Faculty, whether engaged in teaching in the classroom or in the various clinical areas, oblivious of self, have devoted your time and your talents to further the ideals of the Nursing Profession and ofthe Sacred Heart Hospital School of Nursing. You have guided us to acquire that true philosophy of life which is grounded on faith in God and belief in the eternal truths. Under your capable guidance we have attained the knowledge, skills and ideals of nursing so that we are now prepared to contribute our share to the care of the ill, the prevention of disease, and the promotion of health and community welfare. You have enabled us to develop our spiritual, moral, intellectual, cultural, and physical powers. You have unconsciously built in the memory of your students an imperishable monument to your own labors in the form of a lasting remembrance. With sentiments of deepest appreciation we dedicate this annual edition of Carmen Sylva to all of you, loyal members of our faculty, as an expression of our sincere gratitude and affection. Qc-fs: nvfn' n',,n' n ' gag sn u Graduate Nurses Q of i952 i When Doctor Luke, the beloved physician of Saint Paul, was traveling in Spain, Saint Peter was comforting the poor Christians of Rome. The Christians were falsely accused of i poisoning the wells of the eternal city and when the brutal Nero wished to satisfy his personal pride in re-build- , ing Rome, he set fire to the old city F . and naturally accused the few Christ- ians of incendiarism. One historian described the psychology of the bitter persecution of pagan Rome against I the Christians in these words: If the Tiber rises above its banks, ifthe Nile does not overflow, if the skies are not clear, if the earth quakes, if famine or pestilence come, up goes the cry -A The Christians to the lions! l Because of his important position as commander-in-chief ofthe Christians, the people in their ardent desire to save the life of Saint Peter persuaded him to leave the city of Rome. Re- luctantly following the advice of his people, Saint Peter retreated from Rome under the shades of night, he passed through the city's gates un- noticed and was following the Appian Way toward the Cglmpgigna, when RIGHT REVEREND MONSIGNOR LEO GREGORY FINK, LLD VF suddenly 3 bright .light appeared, DIRECTOR or SACRED HEART HOSPITAL The old military highway became I7UffUCf07'-' Medical Ethics the Via Crucisf, A bright light similar to the one which blinded Saint Paul on the Damascene Road, now blinded Saint Peter and he fell to the ground as Jesus, the Divine Leader and Saviour of all mankind stood beside him. The servant recognized the Master! Quo Vauis, DOMINE EM Whither goest thou, Lord ? was the pitiful question. jesus turned His eyes towards the new Calvary of Romeg the brilliancy of His glory departed, the clouded moment of stern duty cast its shadow over the entire world, the broad Roman Road became the narrow Way of the Cross. Peter, I am going to Rome to be crucified again , was the Saviour's firm reply, and burying his face in the dust of the road, the Commander-in-Chief wept bitterly, and His words were non other than the oath-bound seal of his martyrdom. Lord, Jesus, My God, I am going back to Rome . Entering the eternal city, his countersign was the Sign of the Cross and he was immediately arrested and thrown into the darkness of the Mamertine prison and later crucified. Graduate Nurses of 1952! You dare not retreat from the dangers of our atomic age! No matter how severe the persecution against you and your God-given principles may be, remain firm and determined to do what is right, rather than to betray Christ! If perchance, your friends persuade you to abandon your Code of Ethics - your cross - do not try to run away from it. You will never find happiness in breaking the Ten Commandments - the Mosaic Code - and you will never be an Ethical Nurse if you follow the suggestions of so-called friends by deserting Christ. Your life's story will be another Quo Vadis and you will only find peace and security in the ethical principles which were taught to you by your Alma Mater- the Sacred Heart Hospital School of Nursing! May God bless you abuntlantly with good health and length of years for the consummation of your most sanguine hope to live and die for God and Humanity! W BEF' A Success Slory Graduation l95l A whirlwind of events provided a replete sched- ule for our big sisters at graduation time. One of the highlights was the Alumnae Recep- tion held at the Hotel Traylor, May 17, 1951. However, the most impressive feature was the Baccalaureate Mass celebrated in the Church ofthe Sacred Heart of-lesus by Right Reverend Monsignor Leo G. Fink on May 20, 1951. That afternoon exercises commenced with Il processional of the entire student body to Rockne Hall. Norman M. MacNeill, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa., delivered the main address, and Frederic Dreyer, M.D., Presi- dent ofthe Executive Medical Board presented the awards to the honor students. Colleen Dore and Lorraine Henry were the first and second honor students respectivelyg Helen Yura, R.N., class of195O, was a recipient ofa scholar- ship to continue her education at the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. The introduction to their success story was complete, but the story itself was just begun. Now this pertains to us also, and we must remember that each individual is the author ofthe subsequent chapters of her life's history. 5-. 2 W V? Wg' 1 v ,P v ' N' g:g .a-ff - - ,C .-A-sag r,-1 .
