QE Fifi u Miss E1.IzA1sE'1'H KII,MIiYIEIl East Mauch Chunk, Pa. The cherished and Well loved cap of the Sacred Heart Nurse, in its crisp starched simplicity, was designed by Miss Elizabeth Kilmeyer in 1916. This was the same year that the Sacred Heart Hospital School of Nursing was founded. Sister M. Servatia, M.S.C., R.N., the first superintendent of the hospital, was confronted with the problem of designing a cap which would be a symbol of service for the future nurses who would wear it. She requested Miss Kilmeyer, who was then a patient at the hospital, to design a cap for the prospective student nurses. Miss Kilmeyer fashioned many patterns, but finally chose the design now in vogue. Except for the changes in size, the Sacred Heart cap is still identical with the original. The size of the cap and the way it is Worn has been slightly modified through the years to conform with the hair styling. The cap is a symbol of helpfulness, of service to mankind, no matter what the style. It places on the wearer a deep responsibility toward her fellow-man. Small Wonder that the nurse Wears her cap regally, for it is indeed a crown,-this millinery of mercy. .r fxly f iw'
