OUR DIRECTOR, REV. LEO GREGORY FINK Mm Sacred Heart German Syl0e.. ,EI Q Batting worn Dear Graduates: Three years ago you stood at the portals of this, your beloved Alma Mater, to which you are now bidding farewell. What was your aspiration, your heart's desire, your goal then? To be a NURSE-this thought was foremost in your rnind on awakening, and still lingered with you going to rest, this was the goal you had set yourself. A high aim this, and a noble one, indeed. And now you can say, Stilled at last is my heart's longing, the goal is reached, I am a GRADUATE NURSE. Yes, dear graduates, what have long been happy thoughts and pleasant dreams to the Class of '28, what you have long visualized as in the vague future, today flnds its fulfillment. By your unrelenting efforts of the past years you have reached the climax of your training career. You are now standing on the threshold, about to be GRADUATED as NURSES, prepared to go forth giving your generous, whole-hearted, magnanimous service For God and Country. Pro Deo et Patriaf'-Let us, at this turning point in your life-time, wisely pause to consider the meaning of this, your class motto, which shall henceforth be your beaconlight when you launch out into the deep of the unknown Future. Reverse your maxim, and it reads thus: For Country and for God , not that so it will imply anything different, but simply because it will help you to understand better that your service is only a means to an end, that by helping your suffering neighbor you come nearer to your God, that the glory of your Creator and God should be your only motive, no matter what you do. As a nurse you will serve your Country, Great, truly great, is the range your kindly deeds may take. It is as wide as the world of suffering, deep as the heart of sorrow, extensive as the wants of creation, and bound- less as the kingdom of need. For the love of Him Who has said, As long as you did it to one of these, My least brethren, you diclir to Me, you will stand unflinchingly by the side of your afflicted brother, you will soothe the achings of human pain, you will do lovingly the kind deed, hand a glass of water to one in need, on a fevered brow lay a tender hand. You 8 4555 Sacred Heart German Sylilecq IFJ will have a heart full of pity, love and kindness. From your lips will fall a word of comfort to the desponding, a word of encouragement to the faint-hearted, of sympathy to the bereaved, of consolation to the dying. A spirit of philanthropy, of altruism, spurs many on to the doing of similar deeds. But you, dear graduates, have a worthier, nobler incentive before you: For God. You have the example of Him Who went about doing good ever forgetful of self, always mindful of others. Therefore, as a nurse you will walk with God, Along the path that Our Master trodf' He, your Model, will be the well-spring of your love, and your charity will How from a good heart, looking beyond the skies for approval and reward. Your love will be a disinterested one, for Charity seeketh not its own. Striving to imitate your divine Model, you will glide about, an angel of mercy, visiting the sick, soothing the pillow of the dying, dropping a tear with the mourner, and burying the dead-all this, and inhnitely more- For God. Charity begins at home. The Hrst and richest fruits of your benevolence-fruits, both spiritual and material-will come back to you, the donor. If you follow your high ideal, which is the greatest, your lot here on earth can be no other but one of happiness, of contentment, lose sight of your motive, and uneasiness and dissatisfaction will be the result. All this does not by any means exclude your material reward, no, rather, you have a manifold right to it. During the three years' training you have voluntarily relinquished many a pleasure, you have preferred hard work and study, and many a sacrifice to comfort and amusement. More- over, you must have a means of subsistence and livelihood, for without these you cannot go about helping others. Yet, what a difference there is between her who has chosen to be a nurse because this, as a rule, proves to be a profitable employment, and her who is incited by more worthy motives. The latter will gladly serve, even for little gain, whereas the former will always calculate on pecuniary income, on a return of gratitude. The unselfish nurse may reap but little fruit from her labors, materially considered, yet she will always be satisfied, yes, even cheerful, the self- seeker, not finding the expected remuneration, will grow gloomy, cheerless, 9 MT Sacred Heart Gzxrmen Syl0a.. and will be dissatisfied, her kindly deeds, if such they can be called, will he meted out only in proportion to the material prosperity and well-being of him who asks for them. The suffering and afflicted are quick to sense a situation of this kind. They will turn with confidence to the one, for they know that in her heart they occupy a large place, and will not be sent away unassisteclg only with fear and trembling, and when help is nowhere else to be found, will they petition a little service from the other. Go forth, then, dear graduates, on your sweet mission of charity. May the principles you have here imbihed ever guide you, and may your generous heart grow ever larger in its magnanimity, as has done that of a Father Damien, the Apostle of the Lepersf' Like the good St. Elizabeth of Hungary, that heroine of true Christian charity, commence your work of love, and spend your life in doing good to your neighbor, with a charity that has a heart and hand open to allg like her you will experience a peace and a joy that are not of the earth, for The quality of mercy . . . . . . is twice hlestg It hlesseth him that gives and him that takes. Our good wishes, clear graduates, accompany you, and our prayers assist you, wherever you are, spending yourselves Pro Deo et Patrian- QQ 77 For God and Country. We cannot pass over the occasion without publicly acknowledging our appreciation to the aforesaid class of young ladies whose entire course of training was ardently devoted to the fulfillment of their humanitarian service for God and Country. We sincerely hope that the earnest work and live interest which the student nurses of Class 1928 always showed towards their Alma Mater will he a worthy criterion of their future professional careers and co- operation in the development and maintenance of the Sacred Heart Hospital. Let the Insignial Cross of your profession ever keep you mindful of your personal duty towards God, and may the American Flag ever inspire you to lovingly serve your Country. What shall it be that may be of interest and profit, or possibly both? Many subjects naturally crowd for discussion, all pertinent to nurses, and especially to those about completing their course of training. Yet each have so many by-paths that a choice between them becomes no easy matter. However, gradual elimination narrows our thought to such as seem especially worthy of elaboration. Your standardized course of training is nearly completed, and with a sigh of relief everyone of you look forward to freedom from the restraints imposed during the three years of your training. Each one longs for the time when no longer will be felt the many annoyances thrown about you, together with the inflexible power of a seemingly unnecessary discipline. Perhaps the repetition of these by your superiors from year to year has calloused you to their real significance. Yet yours is not a new experience nor one recognized- only by yourselves. For it is common to all of us to smart under the many restrictions incident to training. This applies to every work trade or profession, and not to your own alone. Before you can hardly realize the same, you will be suddenly pre- cipitated from the collective discipline of the training school, to find yourselves afloat in the sea of your chosen profession. You think you will be free to do as you pleaseg actuated now only in greater or lesser degree by an acquired self-discipline-that so much needed and all- important lesson of life. Has the seed fallen on fertile soil during your training and developed into a self-imposed potential influence? -Many factors and combinations of such will enter into your success or failure, but the degree of self-discipline you have acquired will ever remain not the least of these. Fundamental and guiding principles have been impressed upon you, and collectively you have been led along standardized paths. But now comes the parting of the ways, with each one separately compelled to find her own place in the nursing world. Henceforth you will be an isolated individual nurse, no longer part of a class in the training school. Con- fidence in yourself is essential, yet not the self-satisfied confidence born of false self-assurance. The world very promptly discriminates between the 18 umr Sacred I-Ieatriv cB61 IlX9IXSyl05N' Q., v confidence inspired by true training and knowledge, and that of an arrogate superiority undeservedly assumed. Proper self-confidence and good nursing can be maintained only by the continuation of your studies begun in the training school. Ripened by the understanding of fundamentals and subsequent nursing experience, you will find it possible to grasp more quickly, and more fully to appreciate, the thought and value of any post-graduate studies you may now choose to undertake. And nothing stands out more clearly than this need of continued study after graduation, if a nurse would keep abreast with the development and changes in her profession. Do not dispose of your text-books, but keep them for reference, refreshing your mind with their contained theory and the experience of others, applying these to your daily practice. No books of reference can compare in value to those with which you were acquainted while at school. And all will find how subjects that were hazy before will now unfold, by reason of the ripening effect of your own actual experience. A new and clearer meaning presents itself, and an added interest is aroused to what seemed cold, uninteresting and without real understanding when studied previously. Read, and read not only the science of nursing, but stimulate thought by general reading. Storing up a reserve for meeting and enlivening the humdrum in your daily work. Time denied you for general reading while at school, by reason of apportioned duties, will now present itself. Embrace every such opportunity and even though not so inclined, call into play your acquired power of self-discipline and compel yourself to do so. Appreciation of others' thoughts from your reading, will do much to develop your own. Keep up in current events. Sharpen your wits and make yourself not only technically more efficient, but also a more com- panionable nurse. Learn which are the best nursing journals. Subscribe for them, and then read these, so that you may be up in the contemporary thought of your profession. Changes, though gradual, are oftentimes evident first in the current journals, and unless regularly kept up with, ideas of real progress may pass you by without your knowledge of them or their relative importance. Not only should you read your journals, but read generally and incessantlyg good newspapers, magazines-not neglecting to enjoy the 19 6?- Sacred Heart Garmelx Sylilecf, .Q 4 , Www culture of the world's best literature. History, travel, and fiction, all store up and stimulate thought that benefit generally as well as equip the nu.rse's mind for her own and to her patient's advantage. You will have to meet all kinds of people. Welcome that nurse whose well-trained mind and general culture equals her special training in nursing. Join your nursing societies-local, state, and national. Take part in their activities. Do not be a free lance or become what this eventually oftentimes leads to-an outlaw in your profession. Be regular in your thought and actions, and if discouraged by the apparent irregularity of others at times, throw your strength to the maintenance in your organiza- tions with a regularity of real worth. Visit hospitals-the home of the trained nurse-coming back frequently to your own Alma Mater. But do not fail to visit others. Get over your wall. Walk the floors and visit the clinics whenever and wherever possible. Become well rounded thereby, and without any sacri- fice of loyalty to your own school, see that there is a world beyond your own. For you will learn sooner or later that this is so regardless as to whether you recognize the same or not. Do not let others dazzle you by their apparent superiority, but with a true sense of proportion maintain your position and learn from their work. i When you have an inclination and preference for some special branch of nursing, prepare yourself for it first by obtaining general nursing experience. It will serve you in good stead and lay a solid foundation for any special line of work that may be undertaken subsequently. Gradually direct your study and reading in the direction of your specialty, but only after you are sure that you have a special aptitude for this chosen line. Instead of drifting with the current, therefore, outline and lay plans for your present and future professional life. Even though you may be compelled to adjust and change these by unforeseen conditions. Do not permit yourself to be satisfied with present accomplishments without a proper ambition for advancement, or you will soon find your life a monotone, unstimulated and uninliuenced by the spice of progress in your profession. Qlllass ilaistutp In the year of nineteen twenty-five The training of our class was begun. Miss McDern1ott was the first to enlist For fear seniority she might miss. She did not, however, come alone- It's hard to leave your folks and home- Therefore, Miss Tate, cheerful and gay, Decided to come with her and stay. Thus McDermott and Tate our class begun, But soon they were joined hy another one, For Miss Borowslci, quiet and sedate, Entered smiling and up-to-date. Then came Miss Quigley, so neat and prim, Where fun existed she was sure to join in. Then came Schantz, from Allentown, We never saw her with a frown. The next member added to our class was Glose, Wlmo always fainted when Doctors were close. A Soon to follow was Hahner, Pottsville's pride, With Beatrice always at her side. Now with Cupid's how came Hart, We know some day she will hit the dart. Then from town did hail Miss Kipp, Soon married, and from our class did skip. Then came Englehardt, from across the street, Always witty and cheery to meet. 35 Aim Sacred Henri? Next to join was Pillar, a mighty fine skate, Very graceful and a worthy classmate, Without a girl chum she never could do, Therefore, Miss Gazdick followed her, too. Gaz is impulsive and prompt to act, And makes each glorious thought a fact. Then came Stefanko, Jeanesville's pride, Who never would consider a Ford for a ride. Next, fair Miss Sokol meets our eyes, She does the Chrysler patronize. Here is Grala, so bright and jolly, For her to he serious would he a folly. From Oakdale came Yesko, God bless her heart, In mischief and fun she will always take part. The latest fashions McGorry does know, And that is the reason we all love her so. Then came Collins, with a kind heart- We never saw Collins and McGorry apart. Now came McGilloway, so jolly and gay, Who always insisted upon having her own way. QKIHSS will We, the Senior Class of 1928 of the Sacred Heart College of Nursing, in twenty-four individual and distinct parts, being about to pass out of the sphere of training, in full possession of crammed minds, well- trained memories, and almost superhuman understanding, do make and publish this, our last will and testament, hereby rendering void all former wills or promises made by us at any time heretofore, or careless speaking one to the other as the thoughtless wish of an idle hour. And first we do direct, as the last injunction of the departing, that our passing shall be conducted by our friends and well-wishers, our Superintendent and her all-wise faculty who have been our guardians for so long, with all the pomp, dignity and gravity that our worth, our merit and our positions as Seniors of grave and reverend mien must certainly have deserved. We know that our departure will be attended by secret delight on the part of the Intermediates, because they will thus ascend to our proud and worthy eminence as Seniors, and by our Superintendent, Supervisors, Instructors and other authorities, preparing our way for a peaceful future, with complete surcease from all worry and every anxiety. We dispose of our estate as follows: ' Item 1. We do give to our honored Superintendent, Sr. Severina, our sincere respect, our deepest reverence and our unbounded admiration for her ability to manage this great institution. And we do herewith return to Sister Severina the remains of the hospital, trusting that we have not damaged it materially, or by reputation, beyond repair, reparation or restitution. Item 2. We give to our beloved Superintendent of Nurses, Sister Bertha, our heart-felt affection, our most earnest gratitude for all her care of us in our training days, our assurance that we know she has clone the utmost in her power for us, both professionally and socially. Item 3. To our noble faculty we bequeath all the amazing knowl- edge and startling information that we have furnished them from time to time in our various examinations and classes. Item 4. We leave behind us for our faithful Supervisors, an uninter- rupted succession of peaceful nights and days. No more shall they lie 49 fm V Sacred Heart G3e.rme1xSylOa. awake, losing precious hours of sleep, worrying over their patients whom they left to our tender mercies. And now we come to those of our heirs who are dearest of all to our hearts-our classmates, whom we leave behind, from whom parting costs the severest wrench. To our Preparatory Students, better known to us affectionately as Probationers, or merely Probes, we leave dazzling dreams of bibs, with all that symbol implies. We leave to them a rugged path to travel, yet strewn on each side with bright flowers of happiness and achievement, and shining stars of success and victory. It is the path we have travelled, and to our memories it is a path o'erlaid with satisfaction in spite of all its rough places and its ups and downs. We leave to them the sands of time, upon which to make larger and deeper footprints than we have made. And we do further leave to our Probationers our pleasure that we have had them to work under us, and our unbounded confidence that they will surpass our highest hopes for them. To our Juniors: We are sorry that we can leave only two years' toil and pleasure, but we do joyfully bestow upon them two full years of Future, with possibilities and opportunities exactly like those we have willed to our Probes. Unto our Sister Class, now known as Intermediates, we bequeath our position, our dignity and our title as Senior Class of Sacred Heart College of Nursing. We leave them the high standards and noble traditions of this school and pray that they may uphold and preserve them in such way as to continue the high and holy reputation which many classes of their predecessors have sacrificed to maintain untarnished. We leave them eager expectations, delightful anticipations and happy waiting days for their own graduation. Besides these large and conspicuous gifts, we do declare the sub joined list of smaller items to be the personal property of the Class of 1929 alone, and do direct that they be distributed as follows: Miss.McDermott wills her gait to Miss Lapchaclc. Miss Tate wills her cartwheel to Miss Otto. Miss Borowski wills her fearlessness while on Night Duty to Miss Rooney. Miss Quigley wills her saxophone to Miss Sefing. Miss Schantz wills her Charleston to Miss Roos. Miss Glose wills her bluff to Miss Bierschmidt. May they endeavor to 611 them as advantageously, as promptly, and as faithfully as we have done. Any old uniforms, ragged bibs, cuffs, aprons and caps that we may inadvertently leave behind us in the excitement and haste of gathering up our cherished treasures for the last time, we direct that they be disposed of by our Superintendent of Nurses. Now we have stripped ourselves of honor and material riches for those whom we love, and we are ready to depart from you with nothing more than we can talce in our heads and upon our backs. We do hereby appoint the Superintendent of Nurses as sole Executrix of this, our last will. CLASS OF '28. 51 45-iw Sacred Heart G3a.rmQ1xSyl0a..IIf :I I 1 Ju ! We have looked forward to this day with pleasure, exultation and sorrow. Hope and fear fill our hearts. It is an utter impossibility to remain cold and apathetic towards the thoughts which our graduation evokes in us. For the past three years this Training School has been a harbor of safety for us. Thus far we have been guided, piloted and tutored by kind and solicitous friends-our good Sisters and esteemed Doctors. We are about to leave the harbor and shall stand alone facing the world, answering its calls and undertaking grave responsibilities. Who will deny that storms will be encountered--storms that probably will make the waves and billows surge high above our frail vessels? Battles on the high seas of life must be fought, and it is obvious that victories can be won only by faithful adher- ence to duty and to the precepts laid down for us by our Alma Mater. During our training there has been placed before us admirable lessons in the sacrihce of self-lessons which illustrate our school motto- For God and Country. Our instructors have tried to make it clear to us that this must be, and shall ever remain, our motive. The time has now come when we are about to put these instructions and advices into effect. As we leave the safe harbor, we must pilot our own ship aright on the high seas of our profession. It is very important that we keep our masthead light shining and our tow rope strong, but above all, we must not neglect the important lights of love and kindness. To do all we can, as well as we can, with the highest and purest motive, is the true spirit of a nurse and a living embodiment of: For God and Country. 61 f Sacred Heart German SylOef.
