No idle metaphor is our theme, for we of Vineland live in the Land of the vine, whose purple fruit and gold— And crimson wealth are gifts of sum- mer’s sun ...” Here in an earlier epoch, settlers were attracted by the large vineyards, whose grape-bearing areas developed the fa- mous Welch grape juice. From the rich foliage and profuse verdure discovered in 1861, there emerges today the pros- perous city of Vineland, stretching over sixty-eight square miles, making it the largest city in point of area in New Jer- sey with a population of approximately 40,000 people. We who are privileged to emerge from Sacred Heart High School in the year of our Lord 1959, express deep and heartfelt appreciation to those members of the Mystical Body whose many sacri- fices have made our graduation a lovely reality. 5

Ready to pluck the fruit and to taste the pleasure of four years of spiritual and academic planting, the class of 1959 pauses to reaffirm its place in the Mystical Body of Christ. Just as the young vine clings firmly to its organism before branching out on its own, so we TABLE OF CONTENTS now reach out to spread our luxuriant growth upon an ever-shrinking world. Enlightened by the root of Faith, we have chosen for the theme of our record- book the words of the Seed-Sower, I am the Vine; you are the branches.” In an age when the ideas, hopes and dreams of our nation, are literally, as well as figuratively, airborne,” we se- niors desire to reflect on the still higher ideals that are inspired by familiarity with heavenly verities. Knowing that man has always sought in some manner to identify himself with the Divine, the Sacred Heart graduate epitomizes the realizable truth of that dream—his place in the Mystical Body of Christ. Our mystical membership has developed and perfected our natural faculties by co- ordinating them with the Supernatural. Our Catholic education has embraced the whole aggregate of human life, spiritual and physical, moral and intellectual, individual, domestic and social, with the goal of elevating it according to the teaching of Christ.
