Responsible in great measure for the teem- ing harvest of notable accomplishments is our beloved Pastor. Ever adding to the spirit and growth of all that is Sacred Heart, he constantly vitalizes the seed and promotes the expansion of every pro- ject. Nor can we ever forget his manifold encouragement to us to remain fruitful branches of the Blessed Vine. The Right Reverend Monsignor WILLIAM J. HICKEY S.T.D., V.F. Pastor Dean of Cumberland County June, 1959 Dear Graduates: A few months ago Our Holy Father, Pope John XXIII, announced a forth- coming Oecumenical Council and placed as its dominant aim Unity under Christ. Centuries ago another John, the beloved Apostle, in quoting the Saviour s words, I am the Vine, and you are the branches,” sounded the same clarion call of which the Holy Father’s words are an echo. In our knowledge of Christ’s teaching and the understanding of our obliga- tions to God, we see these words in their deepest significance. Presently, on the eve of graduation and in the years that lie ahead, they carry for you a continuing meaning in your devotion to God, His Church and your school. The first two stem from your birth and your Baptism, marking you as children of God and heirs of Heaven—your firm foundation; the last, not the physical buildings but your Alma Mater, whence you received the spiritual training and moral guidance that mark the superstructure, well begun, that the future will complete. Over the years you have looked forward hopefully to the completion of your high school education. We join you in this achievement and especially in your hope for the future. May you ever be strong, vigorous and healthy branches, clinging to the Vine, and may you yield fruit a hundredfold for your happiness here and your eternal joy in the Vineyard of the Lord. me v incyara ui me luiu.
