?• Ready to pluck the fruit and to taste the pleasure of four years of spiritual and academic planting, the class of 1959 pauses to reaffirm its place in the Mystical Body of Christ. Just as the young vine clings firmly to its organism before branching out on its own, so we TABLE OF CONTENTS now reach out to spread our luxuriant growth upon an ever-shrinking world. Enlightened by the root of Faith, we have chosen for the theme of our record- book the words of the Seed-Sower, I am the Vine; you are the branches.” In an age when the ideas, hopes and dreams of our nation, are literally, as well as figuratively, airborne,” we se- niors desire to reflect on the still higher ideals that are inspired by familiarity with heavenly verities. Knowing that man has always sought in some manner to identify himself with the Divine, the Sacred Heart graduate epitomizes the realizable truth of that dream—his place in the Mystical Body of Christ. Our mystical membership has developed and perfected our natural faculties by co- ordinating them with the Supernatural. Our Catholic education has embraced the whole aggregate of human life, spiritual and physical, moral and intellectual, individual, domestic and social, with the goal of elevating it according to the teaching of Christ. Following the Divine Exemplar, we wish to pass on to others Ijnclertlt 42 aASeS acuity 3 6 Seniors f- aefe 14 s lctiuitied f- acje 54 f- atronS f- acje 89 what we have received, with our personal contribution added, for in the Mystical Body no one receives for himself alone, but always to share with fellow members, likewise branches of the Vine which is Christ. No idle metaphor is our theme, for we of Vineland live in the Land of the vine, whose purple fruit and gold— And crimson wealth are gifts of sum- mer’s sun ...” Here in an earlier epoch, settlers were attracted by the large vineyards, whose grape-bearing areas developed the fa- mous Welch grape juice. From the rich foliage and profuse verdure discovered in 1861, there emerges today the pros- perous city of Vineland, stretching over sixty-eight square miles, making it the largest city in point of area in New Jer- sey with a population of approximately 40,000 people. We who are privileged to emerge from Sacred Heart High School in the year of our Lord 1959, express deep and heartfelt appreciation to those members of the Mystical Body whose many sacri- fices have made our graduation a lovely reality. 5 The Moil Reverend justin j. McCarthy S.T.D., LL.D. Bishop of Camden Responsible in great measure for the teem- ing harvest of notable accomplishments is our beloved Pastor. Ever adding to the spirit and growth of all that is Sacred Heart, he constantly vitalizes the seed and promotes the expansion of every pro- ject. Nor can we ever forget his manifold encouragement to us to remain fruitful branches of the Blessed Vine. The Right Reverend Monsignor WILLIAM J. HICKEY S.T.D., V.F. Pastor Dean of Cumberland County June, 1959 Dear Graduates: A few months ago Our Holy Father, Pope John XXIII, announced a forth- coming Oecumenical Council and placed as its dominant aim Unity under Christ. Centuries ago another John, the beloved Apostle, in quoting the Saviour s words, I am the Vine, and you are the branches,” sounded the same clarion call of which the Holy Father’s words are an echo. In our knowledge of Christ’s teaching and the understanding of our obliga- tions to God, we see these words in their deepest significance. Presently, on the eve of graduation and in the years that lie ahead, they carry for you a continuing meaning in your devotion to God, His Church and your school. The first two stem from your birth and your Baptism, marking you as children of God and heirs of Heaven—your firm foundation; the last, not the physical buildings but your Alma Mater, whence you received the spiritual training and moral guidance that mark the superstructure, well begun, that the future will complete. Over the years you have looked forward hopefully to the completion of your high school education. We join you in this achievement and especially in your hope for the future. May you ever be strong, vigorous and healthy branches, clinging to the Vine, and may you yield fruit a hundredfold for your happiness here and your eternal joy in the Vineyard of the Lord. me v incyara ui me luiu. The Reverend CHARLES P. MeGARRY Superintendent of School Diocese of Camden The Reverend JOHN J. CLARK Assistant Superintendent of Schools Diocese of Camden The Reverend Charles P. McGarry honored the dedication ceremonies by a brief but inspiring message on the subject of Catholic educa- tion in general and of Sacred Heart's contribution in particular. Father's reference to Monsignor’s forethought and leadership in the local educational set-up called forth appreciative applause. 8 I The Reverend JEROME M. PRISCO The Reverend WILLIAM J. REYNOLDS The Reverend JAMES M. PERRELLI Sign mine, Sign mine, Sign mine,” clamor these eager teniors a few minutes after receiving their yearbooks. MARGARET BEU, R.N., B.S. Home Nursing, First Aid Instruction SISTER AGNES ISABEL Principal CfOMCj-d in Path Days of sowing on the part of our Principal, Sister Agnes Isabel, now give way to happy reaping on the part of Sacred Heart students. No untoward winds of Time’s wearing years can turn to cockle the seeds nurtured by Sister, who daily exhorts us to bring forth the fruit that remains.” Caught by the lensman as they traveled in realms of gold” are Sister Agnes Isabel and a group of her English IV students. They are Anisia Cehelsky, Mary Ann Di Mattco, and Edmund Csefalvay. Off to a victory, or at least to a good game,” say Sitter dare Letitia and Sister Miriam to Mr. James Hatch, Coach, as they meet him en route to join the boys. Mother Irma Immaculate bids good- bye to Sister Clare Gervase and Sis- ter Catherine Joseph as they prepare to leave for the Middle States Con- vention at Atlantic City. 12 Mr. Christopher Kiuanr, smiling maintenance man, greets every Sister with a cheery Good morning that just starts the day off right. Here he opens the door for Sister Edward Benedict and Sister Margaret Teresa as they arrive to begin another day. Mrs. Esther Evans, girls’coach, is almost sure of a vic- tory with such strong support as she knows the team will receive from Sister Consolata Maria and Sitter Joseph Annetta. Besides teaching a class in home nursing to the senior girls, Mrs. Margaret Beu, R.N., B.S., school nurse, han- dles many details relative to the health of the students. Here she checks the health records with Sixer Grace Catharine and Sister Joseph Emmanuel. 13 SENIO Mystical members in Christ’s vineyard, these seniors have dug their roots deep during four years of academic prepara- tion. Well might they say with the poet, The leaves are many under my feet.” Leaves of effort and anxiety now give way to the flowers of purposeful achieve- ment. As sturdy branches of the Vine, they now disperse in a waiting world to bring forth Christ-fruit. 9ou them. y 16 Anisia Irene Cehelsky Immaculata College Scholarship Winner Edmund Eugene Csefalvay Sandra Ann Cupini Chestnut Hill College Scholarship Winner orerd ERNEST JOSEPH AUGUSTINE 1204 Eui Pine Street Millville, New Jersey SAINT MARY MAGDALEN Ernie” . . . cakes good pictures??? . . . always ready for a joke . . . proud owner of a '53 green Mercury convertible . . . hopes someday to become the president of Twentieth Century Fox Studios . . . always giving compliments??? . . . Prolonged forethought, detailed planning, careful execution, and a sea- soned faith brought to completeness the extensive construction program begun by Monsignor just a few years ago. With genuine pride does the Vineland community look upon the newest acquisition at Sacred Heart. An immense gymnasium- auditorium with all possible conveniences is well used by the youth of South Jersey. The spacious stage, enriched by every desirable appointment, has finely controlled microphonic devices. The science laboratories and lecture areas, to- gether with the special rooms for business education, are a joy to teachers and students. They who daily reap the fruits of the recent expansion program are heartily grateful to the Masters of their Vineyard in the persons of their beloved Bishop and their devoted Pastor. . Responding to the beautiful ritual of their Ring Day ceremony, these juniors will long remember February 2, 1959. 59 Senior Joseph Musso confers with Mr. Daniel Solari, yearbook consultant, in matters of artistic layout for the 1959 VINE LEAVES.
