Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1958 volume:

ith the tufminq of a faqe y a stnanJ is hut ink motion THE 1958 VINE LEAVES SACRED HEART HIGH SCHOOL VINELAND • NEW JERSEY Like to a rich medieval tapestry are the life-figures and the deft motif of the 1958 Vine Leaves. Obscured somewhat by upperclass activities during the earlier years at Sacred Heart, the present seniors come into their own in the presentation of their completed tapestry, the golden threads of which they gather for presentation to the Master-Weaver who planned the whole design.” Of min- gled yarns has been the texture of these four colorful years. Swifter than a weaver’s shuttle have they sped away, leaving their most realistic moments and coveted memories. The fragrance of accomplishment that permeates these final pages must never ob- scure the maze of tangled knots and discordant colors that make the under side” of this tapestry. Twisted strands and multi- tangled skeins there were to be sure, but the completion and perfection of the whole makes us forget those arduous hours of student labor when we pulled the threads and set in the weave, numbered the rows and tightened loose ends. Every action of our four years at Sacred Heart, whether academic or co-curricular, has contributed to the design on the upper side” of our tapestry. Now as we shut down the loom of our school life, we invite you, our priests, parents, teachers and student-weavers to share in the joy of the finished pattern. WE, THE GRADUATES of 1958, pay respectful homage to our Bishop, the Most Reverend Justin J. McCarthy. His inter- est in our Catholic education is best manifested in the inspir- ing message he conveys to each one of us on the opposite page. We thank His Excellency for completing Sacred Heart’s Master Plan by the addition of our new high school wing. of OUR flBtR $ tSTN BUSHED BISHOPS OFFICE COOMI ITRIIT CAMOIN 1 . NCW JERSEY Sacred Heart High School, Vineland, New Jersey. Xy dear Students: Inspired by the thought so beautifully expressed by Father ?abb in his poem, Life's Weaving , you have chosen an excellent thene for your 1956 Yearbook. At Sacred Heart High School you have learned that genuine love means conformity to the Will of God. You have learned what God wills you should believe and do. You have learned that God permits trials to purify, strengthen and enrich your character. You have realised better that God helps you by His grace and by inspiring others to guide and encourage you. Your priests, your parents and your teachers are most interested in your spiritual and mental development. I am sure you are sincerely grateful for what they have done and ale doing for you in the name of Cur Lord. May I mention particularly your capable and devoted pastor. Monsignor Hickey, whc has recently been singularly honored by Our Holy Father, Pope Pius XII. In accord with the thene you have selected for this year, I should like tc emphasize a fact which I ar sure you appreciate. In the life of every one of us God is the Principal Weaver; we are His subjects and co-workers. He desires to fashion for each one of us a pattern of life which will insure a measure of peace and happiness for us on earth as a preparation for a more glorious life with Him in heaven. It is my prayerful hoe that you ever continue to weave in earnest and let God the Master Weaver do the rest. God and you make the best partn« ship to guarantee a good life for you. He will never fail to do the major port; I am certain that you have learned to co-operate with Him, Your °est Friend. Faithfully yours in Christ, -f Bishop of Camden. WEAVE The Right Reverend Monsignor William J. Hickey, S.T.D., V.F. Pastor Dean of Cumberland County On November 15, 1957, Pope Pius XII conferred upon Monsignor Hickey the papal dignity of Domestic Prelate, with the title of Right Reverend Monsignor. The graduates of 1958 share in the honor of their beloved pastor at his investiture by the Most Reverend Bishop. For over twenty years Monsignor has fashioned the intricate tapestry of Sacred Heart Parish. His faith and hope and love Have been The warp and woof Of fabric gay That he has traced for Thee today.” Bishop invests Monsignor 4 Monsignor prepares for the investi- ture ceremony on December 22, 1957, in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Camden. PERRELLI PLACE THE TOOLS To the students who daily pass along our corridors, the Sisters of Saint Joseph, of Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, are a familiar sight. Thirty-seven years ago they began working in Vineland. For the last thirty-one years they have woven secondary education into their teaching pattern. Eleven Sisters, and three lay teachers, all specialists in their respective fields, daily direct the students in spiritual, academic and social growth: They make the rose threads fairer, The gold more bright and clear. Planning for a greater tomorrow! The evolution of a Catholic secondary school springs from a combination of vision, planning, effort, and faith of purpose. Joseph Musso, a Junior, explains the significance of the graph which he made to indicate daily progress in the play drive. Theme drawings throughout our yearbook are also the work of Joseph. Members of the second cast evince interest in Ballet Master Ernest Augustine's plans for their activities. Entire cast of The Fortune Teller assembles for the grand finale. f XT A I serious moment is glimpsed at a meeting of senior altar boys with their moderator, Reverend James Perrelli. A long last good-bye is waved to the ‘58 Class by Mr. Christopher Kissane, faithful custodian of Sacred Heart High School. Sophomores Margaret De Marco and Anita Tursini proudly verify the diplomas of their brothers. Not only is Mrs. Margaret Beu Sacred Heart's quali- fied nurse but she is also the weekly lecturer to the seniors on Principles of First Aid. Monsignor echoes the seniors’ thoughts—’tis come at last the blessed night! Miles of smiles are evidenced as the ’58 photos arrive for distribution. Seniors exchange last-minute pleasan- tries amidst graduation maneuvers. How are things up there?” asks Joyce Traverso of her senior neigh- bor, Richard Squires. CHRISTIAN LIFE J ie Jafiesfaij OF A O Mary, Heavenly Queen, from whose fabric of virginity was fashioned the humanity of Christ, grant that we, too, may weave Him into the tapestry of our lives. Sometimes He weaveth sorrow, Which seemeth strange to me; But I will trust His judgment, And work on faithfully; ’Tis He who fills the shuttle He knows just what is best; So I shall weave in earnest And leave with Him the rest. At last, when life is ended, With Him I shall abide, Then I may view the pattern Upon the upper side; Then I shall know the reason Why pain with joy entwined, Was woven in the fabric Of life that God designed.
