“
r JOSEPH Zhe 957 Vine leaves SACRED HEART HIGH SCHOOl VINELAND, NEW JERSEY Juvites you to A company considered to be assembled about a central point of interest, bound by a common tie, converging toward a coveted objective” . . . such is one of the many accepted definitions of a CIRCLE, and it is from this recognized meaning that the theme of the 1957 VINE LEAVES evolves. The area of the Sacred Heart circle includes the curricular and the co-curricular activities of some three hundred students, drawn from sixteen parishes, who bound by a common tie, come daily from great distances to this educational center. Here they avail themselves of the opportunities offered them to acquire not only a sound academic background but a solidly religious training as well. COME, JOIN OUR CIRCLE,” say these students, as they share with you their round of exciting experiences. oooooooooo Sacred Heart High School is a fully accredited institu- tion of learning entitled to grant the secondary school diploma of the State of New Jersey and the Diocese of Camden. Students may avail themselves of business sub- jects or college preparatory courses. Three foreign lan- guages, four years of Mathematics, three laboratory sci- ences are included in the majors offered. Minor subjects include Mechanical Drawing, Music, Library, Art, Physi- cal Education, and Health. Sports and Dramatics also appeal to many of the students. Religious and lay faculty members hold academic de- grees from the following colleges and universities: The Catholic University of America, National University of Ireland, University of Notre Dame, University of Penn- sylvania, Fordham University, Western Reserve Univer- sity, Villanova University, Seton Hall University, Uni- versity of Colorado, University of Maine, Temple Univer- sity, New York University, Chestnut Hill College, La Salle College, College of Notre Dame, Maryland, Maryland Institute. TO YOUR EXCELLENCY THE MOST REV. JUSTIN J. McCARTHY, S.T.D., LL.D. The students of Sacred Heart High School, Vineland, tender a most sincere welcome to the Diocese of Camden. As the lesser lambs of your new fold, we pledge our youthful fealty, while glad we bless the power that made thee shepherd in our land.” 4 Devoted religious directors form its core... THE VERY REV. MSGR. WILLIAM J. HICKEY, S.T.D., V.F. Pastor Dean of Cumberland County THE REV. CHARLES P. McGARRY Superintendent of Schools Diocese of Camden Understanding O Advisors It has been said of priests in general, and in particular of those priests engaged in the educa- tion of youth, that they are like candles set in the midst of darkness that through them true light might be diffused. And just as true light, with un- erring accuracy, penetrates the darkness, so have our priests assumed the great stewardship of God’s royal family of souls, in order to dispel the shadows of doubt and ignorance. They not only live the life and know the truth, but they love both in order to make both loved. Self-sacrifice is only one small arc in the circle of their lives. Complete dedication to the great cause of bringing souls to Christ completes the orbit. THE REV. JOHN J. Sisters, those whose lives are dedicated to Christ and whose work is dedicated to His children, find in a classroom more than a mere workshop or laboratory for the development of the intellect. Rather do they consider a classroom as a hallowed spot, peopled by students who are beloved of Christ and the prospective citizens of Heaven. Theirs is truly the work of an Apostle, faithfully echoing the Word within them and establishing true tenets in fertile and receptive minds. A divine plan is followed through in order to complete a divine work and prepare God’s child not only for life in this world but also for life in Heaven. That they may do uncomplainingly the endless big and little tasks of a teacher, that in serving His children they may better serve Him, is the daily prayer of our teaching Sisters. ’'Thought once awakened docs not sleep again,” said Carlyle, and thought that leads a soul safely and surely through this life to Heaven is frequently, if not always, the result of the awakening of a seed planted early in youth. If the circle of education includes an intelligent adulthood, let thought, awakened, complete the cycle and lead to the eternal realms of Heaven. prepares us as devout and intelligent adults in substance and insight through our curriculum of 12 o 13 FRESHMAN A Row 1: Peter Visconti, David Richmond, John Comisky, Gregory Chiarello, Robert Butler, and George Desotti.
