inc Leases Vine Leaves Published Annually By The SENIOR CLASS SACRED HEART CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL Vineland, New Jersey 1949 To the people OF THE PARISH whose untirinq efforts the past seventy-five years have given to us the finest and most outstanding parish SACRED HEART we the Jubilee Graduates of 1949 dedidate VINE LEAVES as our expression of admiration and deep gratitude. Under the excellent guidance of our beloved Bishop, Sacred Heart has added another glorious year to its book of memories. In his arduous labors for Catholic education in the Camden Diocese, he is a man of inspiring character and undaunted courage, proving himself through the years a capable leader at all times. inc Leases HIS EXCELLENCY THE MOST REVEREND BARTHOLOMEW JOSEPH EUSTACE, S.T.D. First Bishop of the Diocese of Camden VERY REVEREND MONSIGNOR WILLIAM J. IIICKEY, S.T.D., V.F. As we stand on the threshold.of life, it is well to pause a moment and consider those who have given their time and effort to prepare us for what lies ahead. Foremost among those to whom we owe our gratitude is Monsignor Hickey, who is now celebrating his twenty-fifth anniversary as a priest. Twelve years ago, when we started out young and helpless, he was there to guide us along the right path. May we never lose sight of the goal which he set before us. Throughout our sch x)l life, he has been a true friend and a constant source of inspiration. From the beginning, he seemed to take a special pride in us, for it was also his beginning in Vineland and we were the youngest of his flock. The people of Vineland are also indebted to Monsignor Hickey for his splendid work in the parish. Clearance of the debt, renovation of the church, and the l eautifying of the large cemetery, these undertakings are only a few of his many successes. At the present time, plans are well under way for the construction of a new convent for our beloved Sisters. As a reward for all these services the honorable title of Very Reverend Monsignor was bestowed upon Father Hickey on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1947, by His Holiness, Pope Pius XII. Come along with us while we look through the pages of our book of memories and try to recapture the many happy days spent together under the guidance of the Good Sisters of St. Joseph. We entered our Freshmen year with a great deal of enthusiasm and eagerness, and soon found ourselves a group of bewildered students surrounded bv a com- pletely different atmosphere. But in a short time we became acquainted with the “foreign customs” of High School Life. We made our debut in the social whirl by attending the beginning of the regular Saturday Night Dances organized by our former curate. Father Charles Zimmer. Time passed quickly and we found ourselves looking forward with antici- pation to the final social event of the year — Class Day. With the closing of summer, we were again back at our desks ready and willing for work. We, like most second year students, assumed the accepted “Sophomore Air”. Biology, a new and different subject, was added to our schedule. This provided us with many interesting and sometimes humorous experiences in the laboratory. We also mastered, as well as we could, the “angles’ and “tangents” of Geometry. A new feature added in the line of entertainment was the successful production of the first musical comedy, “Sweethearts” under the capable direc- tion of Mother M. Carmela, and Sister Anita Gertrude. With the completion of our final exams, we turn another page on our high school life. We were eager to return in September as Juniors for we realized that now we would be recognized as “upper classmen”. This year was marked with many important events. For the first time since we started school, our class was divided, some following their scientific nature in the General course, and others seeking a knowledge of business in the Commercial course. We were thrilled over the arrival of our class rings in February. A few months later, the musical comedy “You’re The Girl For Me” was recorded as another successful event. The highlight of the year was our Junior Prom, entitled Blossom Time”. The theme was carried throughout in the beautiful decorations. The large crowd that attended helped to make this affair a great success. Before we knew it the warm days of June were upon us and we left once more for the summer vacation. We entered our senior year with the realization that this was to be our final year together. The year also commemorates the seventy-fifth anniversary of the parish, and the twenty-fifth anniversary of Monsignor Hickey’s ordination. This history cannot be written without giving some recognition to the mighty mites of Sacred Heart, who have had a successful season in their basket- ball career. Both teams have gone to victory inspired bv the school spirit of the students. The musical comedy selected this year is Victor Herbert’s “Naughty Marietta”. It will be produced in February and we hope it will meet with great approval. We look forward with great anticipation to our final May Procession. As our Graduation draws near, we recall to mind the arrival of our beloved pastor during our first year in school. We are greatly honored that we were able to complete our twelve years of school under his guidance. As we go forward into the future we will strive to attain the high ideals set for us by the kind Sisters of St. Joseph. Gloria M. Gruccio Marie G. Quairoli Lcq.v’cq Dramatics Sacred Heart High School has presented three successful musical comedies in the past three years. But the play that will live longest in our memories is our own “Naughty Marietta. With its setting in old New Orleans late in the eighteenth century, “Naughty Marietta” is famous for its elegant costumery, humorous dialogue and its tuneful lyrics. Marietta was portrayed by petite and vivacious Jane Napoli. In every per- formance, Jane’s beautiful singing captivated the hearts of all who heard her. Anthony Scarpa, as Captain Dick, was as dashing and commanding as the role demanded. The difficult role of the swash-buckling Etienne, was capably handled by Jean Scarani. When it comes to comedy, we can always depend on Vincent Parenti and Mary Favretto to give hilarious performances. Vincent’s daft portrayal of Silas was equally matched by Marys witty characterization of Lizette. William Sehl, better known as “Monsieur By and By,” added a humorous element to the role of the Lieutenant-Governor. Four peasant girls who added color and gaiety to the performance were: Barbara Ambrose, Nanette; Jane Henncssv, Fanchon; Marie Quairoli, Laurette; Patricia Wallace, Felice. Not to be forgotten are the members of the Junior Cast who contributed a great deal to the success of the play. Mary Jane Matrona and Edgar Peterson, who alternated with Jane and Anthony in the roles of Marietta and Captain Dick. Al Ricci, as Etienne, was Jean Scarani’s co-partner. Burt Martin played the one and only Sir Harry Blake. Patricia Campbell, a Freshman, showed a great deal of promise as a future comedienne, in her characterization of Lizette. Adah, the slave girl, was gracefully portrayed bv Barbara Abruscato. Anthony Asselta added humor to the role of Florenz, the Governor’s Secretary. The two Pirates were played by Vincent Rosati and Joseph Chinnici. It’s PERFORMANCE that counts! Proudly we hail all our talented per- formers who worked so hard with Sister Anita Gertrude to make this rendition of “Naughty Marietta” a splendid success. To all who co-operated with their time and generous efforts to give us so many hours of delightful entertainment, we extend our words of sincere appreciation, “Cod bless you, everyone.” Class Prophecy With the use of our vivid imagination, let us gaze into the not ten) distant future and behold what time shall bring to the class of ’49. A feeling of excitement is in the air as everyone is about to witness this historical occasion. Preparations have been under way for quite some time and, at last, the day has arrived. It is the official opening of the Vineland television station which shall extend to all parts of Eastern United States. Under the skillful guidance of our electrical engineer, Edward Ronchetti, the magnificent devices are ready to operate. Crowds of people are swarming into the ultra-modern building designed by Joseph Yore, architect. The program commences with a dedication by the Mayor, William Sehl. Next comes an address, by the most prominent and successful lawyer of our time, Patricia Wallace, which is received with a generous applause. Numerous comments are heard throughout the audience concerning the artistic arranging and rare beauty of the floral decorations of Mar)' Ann Vondra. Now comes what we have all been anticipating, the first television program from our own city, a variety show. Our Master of Ceremonies is Jean Scarani, a well-known radio announcer. He is assisted by Mary Favretto, now a rising comedienne on Broadway. The sponsor of the program is Joseph Piccione, who has found his fortune in selling used cars. The first performer introduced by Mary is Jane Hennessy, who will render a well-remembered favorite, “Sweethearts. ’ Jane is accompanied by Francis Vannella and his orchestra, which is fast becoming popular on the juke box. Next on the agenda is the model, Amelia Simonini, who is to feature clothes designed by Rita De Tora. These may be purchased at the exclusive shop run by Helen Biddinger and Gloria Rancati. A group of ballerinas, under the direction of Kathleen Hennessy, dancing teacher, delights everyone with their splendid rendition. Among them is Marie Zaniroli. Their costumes were designed by Barbara Ambrose, stylist for many recent Broadway hits. During the intermission which follows, Jean and Mary scan the audience for familiar faces. Among them they find Vincent Parenti, who has recently been honored with the title of Monsignor. Sitting with him is Bernard Corona, Ambassador to Italy, just arrived home from an important mission. Also attending this affair is Dolores Lopergola, now Dean of Hallahan, and Norma DeLorenzo, Math, teacher on the faculty in the same school. Quite a stir is heard when the Master of Ceremonies introduces Gloria Mercoli, Secretary to the President of the Standard Oil Company. During the process of the program, camera flashes have been noticed at the right of the stage. Mary informs us that it is none other than our own Tony Scarpa, here with his editor-in-chief, Joan Bergamo. With them is columnist, June Cheli. Jean calls on Dolores Menz, chief psychiatrist at Newcomb Hospital and Kathleen Ahlquist, lab. technician of the same staff, to say a few words concerning their work at that institution. Accompanying them is Margaret Bertonazzi, dietitian. Mrs. Francis Sparagna, remembered as Connie DiTomo, informs 11s that Rita Rossi was delayed due to a slight automobile accident. After a few selections from “Naughty Marietta” bv the orchestra, we turn back to the entertainment with a small skit written by Miriam Enoch, successful plavwright, under the direction of Gloria Gruccio. The illustrations in Miss Enoch’s works have been done by Priscilla Strauss. The characters in this plav will be portrayed by Jane Napoli, Angie Muccio, and Robert Gerardi, radio actresses and actor. The next act is ventriloquist, Marie Quairoli, with her friend, Toto. which has brought her much fame in radio and promises to do so in television. Much to our sadness and regret we bring to an end this eventful occasion. Our honorable Mayor closes the program with a few remarks expressing the wish that we will meet again in the not too distant future. Not to be forgotten are the people who had a lot to do with the success of this event, Phvllis Rossetto and Joan Michael, film directresses, who lent their services; Rose McGowan and Loretta Cesta, advertising agents, and Gloria Pantilione, make-up artist. in e Leases 1949 Sacred Heart Boys7 Basketball Team In the middle of October, the first call came for basketball practice. Having lost three starting varsity players last year. Coach Norman LeBoeuf had the job of practically building a new team. But the spirit was there and the candidates were willing to work hard. Mr. LeBoeuf developed a team of fairly good height which had plenty of fight and a large array of shots. The team has done a pretty good job so far, considering the opposition. The score is even, five games were won and five were lost. But as the season goes on, we hope to find a larger number in the winning column than in the losing. With the end of the basketball season this year, we lose four seniors. It is with much sorrow in our hearts that we see them depart. Joe Yore, a forward and captain of the team, was a valuable asset who could be depended upon to stay in there fighting with all his strength and might until the final whistle blew. Eddie Ronchetti, a forward, was a fast, hard, fighting, and dependable player whom you could always count upon to do a good share of the work. Bill Sehl, a tall lanky center, could always be found in the “under the basket fight for the ball. We ll miss his hook shots next year. Bemie Corona, guard, a bov who loves basketball and is always ready and willing to play and give all his effort to help the team. To Mr. LeBoeuf, we wish to express our sincere thanks for the patient, tireless hours of tedious work spent in coaching the players. We are sure that the team feels tin same way. Next year, there will be a battle for positions on the starting lineup, for there are several good prospects: A1 Ricci, Joe Guida, Al Jannet, John Tarvin, Dave Lacombe, Dorn Sachetti, Burt Martin, Tonv Asselta, and Ernie DiPalma. Good luck to all of you. w 1949 Sacred Heart Girls’ Basketball Team Under the capable supervision of our Athletic Director, Reverend Charles D. Reiser, not pictured above, (confidentially, we feel the padre is camera shy), the girls’ team began practice for the ’48-’49 season. Our competent managers, Kathleen DeFilippis, Verna DeRossi and Patricia Mulligan arranged a schedule, calling for 15 games. These girls have certainly worked very diligently for the welfare of the team. Coach Margaret Downey, drilled her enthusiastic charges for the opening game, which took place, December 30 against the Alumnae. Kathleen Hennessy, otherwise known to her teammates as “Rat”, was unanimously elected Captain of the team. She has been playing varsity for four years and what a guard! The opposition usually felt it had come in contact wan fly paper and could not get loose. Unfortunately, “Rat was lost in a few games through the personal foul route, but in or out of the game, she was always an inspiration to her comrades, with that “do or die spirit”! Janie Hennessy, “Rat’s” cousin, has done wonders for the team by sinking the ball through the nets from all over the court. When she gets her eye on the basket, watch out girls!! The “little lass from Millville, Dolores Menz, proved to the opponents that she had to be reckoned with this year. Our other starting forward, Betty NlcNaney, was a gift from Catonsville, Maryland. Betty has added to our scoring punch this year and we hope she will be with us again next season. Joyce Cobianchi, our Junior guard, has also played since her Freshman year. You could always depend on Joyce to be in when a tie ball was called. Joan Campbell, our babv of the team and a Sophomore, will most likely follow in Captain “Rat’s” footsteps. Dolores “Lappy” Lopergolo, has been our most reliable player. She is always on hand and pretty hard to stop when she gets in high gear. Gloria Rancati just broke into the varsity this year and after the wav she has been playing, we are wondering why she didn't come out for basketball sooner. And - - - last but not least, may we salute our faithful subs, Mary Lou Hennessy, Katherine McIntosh, Elinor Trucano, Mary Jane Matrona and Margy Greene. They were always present, ready to fight for dear Sacred Heart, if needed. Leases 1949 Sacred Heart Girls’ Softball Team Last year, softball was introduced as a new sport for girls at Sacred Heart High School. Our team only played four practice games, but it was just enough to put them in the swing of the game. We are working on a schedule for this coming season and will plav such schools as Haddonficld, Collingswood, Bridgeton and several others. The players held over from last year are the following: Helen Biddinger, left fielder Dolores Lopergolo, 2nd baseman Gloria Rancati, 3rd baseman Mary Jane Matrona, shortstop Katherine McIntosh, center fielder Despite the many obstacles in our road to success, we are all united in fighting for dear old Sacred Heart.
