And miss our friends whom we all know, It is with sad hearts that we leave And many a school day we shall grieve. Farewell, Oh sisters, good and true, As a friend we’ll always think of you, May God’s good blessings on you shine, As for us, these days we’ll pine. SJo the ( lass of 'lj.2 When at last our school days are over And our books have been cast aside And our class mates have disbanded And have wandered far and wide We shall often think of our classroom Of the carefree days spent there We shall often recall with pleasure The scene of our work and prayer. Then let us resolve to be faithful To the friends of our childhood days, To be loyal to our Alma Mater, And to remember our class always. —Alice M. Fannin Officers: James Wilson, Alice Perri, Roseann Ploppert, George Risi (Sociality For the third consecutive year our Sodality of the Immaculate Con- ception was inaugurated into the school, with the following as officers: Roseann Ploppert, Prefect; James Wilson, First Assistant Prefect; George Risi, Second Assistant Prefect; Secretary, Alice Perri. The office was recited each Tuesday at 10:15 before the Blessed Sacrament and this year for the first time we had the honor of having Father Duffy give us a talk with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament following. Our motto, “To Jesus, through Mary’’ should remind us of the per- fect Sodalist. A Sodalist should place before himself Jesus and Mary, as his models. We should have in our hearts a strong affection and ardent love for the Blessed Virgin Mary. Through Mary the Sodalist should strive to be an ideal Catholic. In January, 1942, the Freshmen and the new members of the school were received into the Sodality by Father Duffy. We sincerely hope that they and we may attain our end, “To Jesus, Through Mary.” me Leases cSallots on the cSea of L ife Have we come to the final lap of this journey already? The hours, days, weeks, months—since we first embarked on this quest of knowl- edge, have gone like the sands that ride off with the changing tide— silently, imperceptibly. But though in the past there has always been a plentiful supply to replenish those that have strayed from us, a wave of realization has now broken over us. We know that our goal, gradu- ation day is here and in the future we shall have only memories. Nevertheless, happy memories! When we entered S.H.H.S. in Sep- tember 1938, we merely waded into the vast ocean of life, and viewed longingly the horizon. Outlined there, weighing anchor, was the ship on which we would sail the seas of life after we had completed our Sen- ior Year. How distant it seemed! But we had little time to spend on wistful thinking, for that was a happy carefree year. We were a class of fifty-three, destined to be molded into fit products of our Alma Mater. Surely, we all remember that dear pilot who had a very effective method of discipline. The pen- alty for misdemeanors was a study period spent in the cloak room. And after all, who wanted to spend a precious study period in a stuffy closet. c Leases There were Latin verbs to congugate, whose odd sounds at first brought a certainty that we would never master them. But surprisingly, we seemed to be riding the crest of the waves as they broke over our new subjects. In fact, it was not long before v e were giving Latin plays for the class. However, we did not linger at the shore for long. The undertow was pulling us into actual problems. Fortunately, before we had a chance to tire, the refreshing wave of summer vacation overtook us. We played happily during the warm months of that first year. And then—we were pleasantly surprised when the next wave tossed us di- rectly into the Sophomore class. Now we began to feel important. The new freshmen were looked on with some condecension. But we soon realized that we had problems of our own that would require our full attention. With all the vim and vigor of which we were capable, we threw ourselves into the game of withstanding the breakers that threatened to sweep us under. Our companions, for the most part, were old friends but we sorely missed others. New faces soon took their places and hand in hand with our new captain, we ventured forth. It was a year that will be long remembered—for the precious hours spent in the Biology Lab., just as much for the retreat and the sodality which was organized. Our retreat master officiated at the solemn induction. What was that splash? Why, one of our boys won a prize for his essay on Catholic Action. And didn’t our heads just swim with those French vocabularies ? The tide rose and carried us through the summer into our Junior year. Again, some sank beneath the treacherous surface. How in- triguing were the school days now! Our sands of time went cascad- ing into the sea. The novelty of changing classes helped to increase their momentum. For the first time the faculty could boast of five members. We were introduced to the mysteries of the Commercial Course. We know now how clumsy we must have sounded pecking away at the keyboards of our typewriters. What fun those class parties were! At least the boys received free dancing lessons. How well we recall the pleasure we experienced in the feverish excitement of selling magazines. Then, we were rewarded for our splendid work by the ice cream party one lazy spring afternoon. To us our Junior Prom stood for the climax. We can still see the hall decorated with all the colors of the rainbow, and hear the murmur of happy voices as we practically floated down the stairs. It was with thrilling expectancy that we watched the Seniors graduate. Then a wave came crashing about our heads. The first qualms came with the realization we would soon set sail from this sheltered harbor. We ex- perienced reluctance as we left our Junior year. A huge breaker mounted and carried us almost too swiftly towards September. During the summer, a majority of the class kept in touch with one another. This resulted in a class party and a doggie roast. The odor of petrinella permeated the air that night but the mosquitoes didn’t mind. What ever happened to the soda we put in the lake to keep cool? September again! As usual Mass was offered for the success of the school year. But for us it held a special significance. This was the last time we would ride in with the tide. It was not unusual to find new Sisters greeting us, but to find three at a time a new Mother Superior was definitely an event. What was more—this was our first experience in receiving Religious instructions from a priest. The roll of our class was now only thirty-two. The boys are familiarly known as the twelve apostles. Our spirits soared every time our Chemistry paper won over the Junior publication. We requested more activities. The answer was permission to have dancing in the gymnasium at the lunch hour. With the coming of winter the sea grew rougher. Just before Advent we gave a Senior dance. The success of our efforts was very satisfactory. Our Sodality was reorganized and surged ahead with renewed energy. Just as we were beginning to look forward to a happy Christmas va- cation, a great tidal wave broke over the entire country and even we, still in school felt the seriousness of the struggle in which our country was involved. After Christmas, the Sodality members became acquainted with the bouquet of Masses and many have contributed very faithfully to it. When mid-year exams were over the waters seemed to grow more gentle. We strove anxiously toward that magnificent white cap—June seventh. Who sent those Valentines? That was a sly ripple that stole up on unsuspecting victims. The day of our May Procession and we could see nothing but golden sunshine showering upon blue, crystal waters. Our night of proud achievement, many thanks to our marvelous di- rector, stands out distinctly as the night of the Senior play. Not long after, it occurred to us that we had not known what gracious hosts the Juniors could be. Congratulations to them on their prom. Now with graduation, the tide goes out. For us there will be no return to these familiar shores again. We have been set adrift on the sea of life—from now on we must chart our own course. Sj ire I ve Little Jlngels What was that I heard you say? What said you from far away? Did you ask about our class? O’er the boys you cannot pass. Now let’s see where shall we start? Let’s get right down to the heart. There were twenty boys that day Well, just twenty-one, let’s say. That was in the Freshman year When our school life was so dear. Then we started to decrease. And we feared our class would cease. But. thank goodness, we pulled through And we’ll prove it all to you. But let’s talk about the class, ’Bout each fellow, not each lass. I recall the old times, when Maggioncalda took my pen. Four long years I’ve tried in vain My poor pen to see again. Rossi’s corny jokes were told With a touch of greenish mold; And his father, Johnny claimed. Built the Brooklyn Bridge so famed Alexander who, you know, Used to like to steal the show, Always had a different girl, Used to give them all a whirl. Dancing was Zagari’s love How he danced; just like a dove. How he spoke of Eleanor How he liked her more and more. But let’s not forget King Pat My! he liked to chew the fat; How his angry nerves would creep When aroused from peaceful sleep. What about that day in Math Pepper wondered off the path? Worked a problem seven ways? Worked himself into a daze? Little Andy went one day In the school house for to play Didn’t think he’d stay there long, But he still is going strong. Several times when in a fit Jerry threatened he would quit But he always did come back For he still is with the pack. Guidarini’s always gay, Even on report card day; Unto Kotok. his old boss, Guidarini is a loss. Now who’s in my mental eye? Why it’s Wilson, My Oh My! Jimmy’s really one nice boy Even though he’s rather coy. And at last within this brain Possumato lives again, Stenciled there by iron staff Will be Possy’s roaring laugh. Now all told, don’t you agree We’re all angels to the “T”? If you don’t, then something’s wrong Not with us but with this song. “George Risi” w on 5 S. M.M.S. Xost 12 cSacted Jlea'll High cSchool SJ)oi s SSus ketball iJearn The 1942 basketball season ended with a record of five victories and twelve defeats for our team. This year the team had a new coach, Steve Junda, a swell fellow, who did a good job. Perhaps our team did not win as many games as it lost, but one must remember that the competition was pretty keen. Our team trav- elled in rather fast company, and our team was hampered by lack of material. However, the fellows who did play did a great job, and we are all proud of their record, and of the sportsmanship they displayed in taking many a beating. To those Seniors who have played their last game, we offer you a multitude of best wishes, good luck, and many thanks. cSacted Hea l SiCujh School (jhIs Basketball SJe cam In answer to the call for basketball candidates, twenty girls re- sponded. Mr. Junda, our coach, immediately began working very diligently with the girls, for the season’s opener. After three weeks of practice the squad was cut. The following comprise the squad: Theresa Dondero Celesta Malatesta Gloria Fillippi Josephine Torelli Clare Fleming Marie Raffo Lillian Filippi Alma Hennessy Eleanor Mattioli Anita Ricci Gertrude McCorristin Kathleen Fleming Helene Pagano Gladys Rone Although our season was not as successful as we had hoped, how- ever, we must pay tribute to a fighting team. The clean sportsmanship, fighting spirit and undying courage displayed by our girls, was some- thing to behold. Theresa Dondero and Alma Hennessy, having played varsity ball since their freshman year were unanimously elected co-captains. “Tree”, as she is known to her team-mates, has proved her sterling qualities as a player. Capable of playing guard or forward, she has been the mainstay of our team. In spite of a knee injury in her Sophomore year she continued playing for her school. The absence of Theresa will be sorely felt. Good luck, Theresa, and we know you will continue, in the game of life, as in sports. Too much cannot be said of our own Alma, who has sparked the team time after time. She will always be remembered by her team- mates. Best of luck, Alma. Last, but by no means least, the third of our departing Seniors, Celesta, or “Chet”, our other forward. We really had the advantage over our opponents with Chet on the team. The guard on the opposing team had difficulty finding her when she once cut for the basket. Main- tain the same speed in life, Chet—and you will have no trouble with the bill collectors. And so we bid fond adieu to another basketball season at Sacred Heart High. It was in Sep- tember 1939, that forty-eight timid Freshman mounted two flights of stairs to light their little candles in the Freshman Room of Sacred Heart High School. We remained quite shy until Hercules and his courageous adventures became a part of our efforts to conquer the Latin of Ancient Rome. But the highlight of our Freshmen year was our reception into the newly organized Sodality of the Blessed Mother, and since then it has been our happy privilege to go every Tuesday morning to Church and sing her praises. This event in our young lives was only surpassed by our first Retreat, given by Father Cox. a Jesuit. With heads a little higher, we entered our Sophomore Year deter- mined to add more lustre to our brightly shining candles. New subjects and new teachers made us feel strange at first, causing our little lights '-O flicker at times, but we used more energy to keep them burning on. Our great experience in the Biology Lab. was the day that we dissected our first frog, but we lived through it and tried more fascinating experi- ments. We became members of the Auxilium Latinum Society and were glad to note that John Schneider received honorary mention in their final test. The Home Arts’ Exhibit and luncheon given for the Sisters was the highlight of the year. So far, we had kept our resolve to shine our way through S.H.H.S. With confidence born of success, we found ourselves in the most precious place in the school, the Junior Room. So many changes took place this year that we did not feel the time slipping by. Our first day brought the realization that Mother Evangelia would no longer guide our footsteps as she had done so faithfully since we were in the Fourth Grade. A new Mother welcomed us to the Junior Room. Mother La Salette. We thought she liked us, but she didn’t stay to prove it. As the months went by and we responded a hundred percent to all the in- terest that Mother Carmela has shown in our welfare, we are not afraid of the future days ahead. Mother will make our dreams come true with our wholehearted cooperation. Our efforts this year to keep our lights shining were first rewarded by our boys carrying off the intramural basketball honors. Then the class entered the Magazine Contest with a goal of $400, but we went over the top with S616 and broke all records. Despite all our troubles with French, we had the courage to organize a French Club and hope before the end of the year to try our dramatic ability in a French play. Who knows, next year we may undertake a French opera after our wonderful training in the newly formed Glee Club! At present, we are working hard in the campaign to elect one of our outstanding boys, Robert Watkins, to the honor of being Mayor of Vineland during Youth Week. Perhaps the fact that we are the proud possessors of our Class Rings—the first time this privilege was granted to the Juniors—has enabled us to keep our candles from being extin- guished by the cold winds of failure. And now. the Prom—The Jun- ior Prom—the dream to come true some happy night in May. Three years of our high school have gone, years, and yet they seem like days. Let us take a moment to pause before we enter our final year in S.H.H.S.—our Senior Year. We see many faces, deeds and scenes which have become a part of us, that we always wish to retain in our memories, so that in after years, we may fondly look back upon these happy days. New ideals, new hopes, new aspirations clamor for ex- pression as next year unfolds before us, and new lamps must shine forth with brighter gleams of light where our feeble candles failed to burn. The Juniors 1942 Leases Sophomore Salule Our first day at Sacred Heart High was an eventful one for all of us. We, proud freshmen, as one person in thought, were earnest and anxious to enter this new phase of school life. We were introduced to many new Sisters as well as many new subjects. Getting acquainted with our new Sisters was pleasant, but making friends with new sub- jects was a different matter! Many things stand out in our minds. One event was being receiv- ed into the Sodality. Every Tuesday morning since then, we have been happy to go over to Church and recite the Office. We decided definitely to attack our subjects the very first day, and master them. The new work and the new surroundings made stronger our interest. Days grew into weeks; weeks became months. Time marched on. We tried to keep ’pace. Altogether, the ten months of the freshman year went by so fast, that before we knew it, we were attending the graduation exercises at Church. We bade goodbye to our classmates for a little while. In true modern blitzkrieg fashion, we stormed the school door for our Sophomore year. The shrill ring of the bell turned our thoughts from idle pleasure, and reminded us of the year of hard work ahead. We were full of confidence until we opened our books and saw many- sided figures, and cross sections of leaves and animals. Then we felt like the Ancient Mariner---------- “Alone, alone, all, all alone, Alone in a wide, wide ------------” room! During the basketball season no one was more surprised than we when we won the intramural basketball championship. The following days flew swiftly by as if on wings. Christmas vacation came and went. Then the gloom descended! Exams had come like an enemy bomber in the night. That certainly was a “blackout” week for us. Then the “all clear” sounded! Once more we came out of hiding from behind those --------- books! St. Patrick’s Day brought the play “Lourdes” which was directed by Mother and proved a huge success. As we put the closing touches on the first half of our high school years, we resolve on an “all out” attack of scholarship during the next two years of our high school life. zMn in c Leases ( lass Jlisto'iy of the SI eshman W41 - nm On a clear, bright September morning, we first entered Sacred Heart High portals. Shortly after our entrance class officers were el- ected. John Greene, President of the class, is known for his jolliness, friendliness and eagerness to cooperate with all activities. One of the famous Ambrose twins, Tommy, Vice-President, is known for his good salesmanship and sociability. Treasurer, Leo Doerr is noted for his frankness and a great mind for inventions. Our last officer, the class Secretary, twinkled-eyed Gladys, is also known as one of our great ar- tists. We cannot fail to mention, “Possy”, and “Spitz” and “Bobby” for their athletic ability. Mary Armstrong and Marie Roberts, two of our own girls were chosen cheerleaders. Early in November, girls were asked to assemble in order that the girls' basketball team might be chosen. One girl Helene Pagano, of whom we are very proud, was chosen for the varsity team. She parti- cipated in one of the greatest athletic events looked forward to in Sac- red Heart, that is, the West Catholic Girls’ basketball games. Because of its “noisy” band, these games have always aroused high spirits and excitement, but there was always the feeling that “we might lose”. Not bragging, but just whispering that we have cooperated one hundred percent with all activities such as motion pictures, plays and benefits that were conducted by the school. If we were to name the faults of this class, we are afraid we would, have a harder time than one has in naming the good qualities. The good qualities so overshadow the bad ones, that the latter appear quite negligible. From these few remarks it must be quite evident to you that among our good qualities should be mentioned perseverance and grit. Quite true we have had difficult lessons to learn, but in solving the problems it .has been a pleasure to us indeed. In entering our Freshmen Class, almost at once Hercules loomed on our horizon. Preserved not only in our minds, but also in our olfactory senses is the memory of exploring the secrets of the world in our Science books. Algebra and its complicated ways produced for us many problems which we enjoyed solving. There still remains one subject ??? from which we have calloused hands. Our pursuit of knowledge took us far afield and not always did we walk “in a garden”. Dreaded days came every nine weeks. Yes, report cards. But the kind criticism of Father Hickey helped some improve their marks. Vine Leases Shortly after our return to school in January, we were admitted into the Sodality of Our Blessed Lady, which we now attend every Tuesday at 10:15 A. M., in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament to re- cite the Office of Our Blessed Mother. The greatest social event of the year w’as “Lourdes’ , a school play conducted by Mother Carmela, our Principal. We are happy to mention that six of our classmates participated in this wonderful play. It was the first day of April when Mother brought us the sad tid- ings that we were to have a thirteen-day Easter vacation, instead of the seven day vacation. With saddened hearts ???, we left school that afternoon to return the thirteenth of April. Our May Procession and a whispered prayer that “I” may some day be the fortunate one to crown our Blessed Lady, brings the month of May. With eager hearts we are looking forward to the end of May when we hope to be entertained by the gallant Senior group. Don’t disappoint us, Seniors. The next step in our school calendar is our first prom. With a maximum of hope and a minimum of experience, arrayed in our finery, we will make our debut in the social whirl. Before we realize it, the month of June will be here and our first year of high school will be over—our “baby days’ will cease and our hearts will swell with pride if we prove successful. Sometimes there have been wrinkles on the brows of our faithful teachers over the antics and didos of this ever-active fun-loving class of ours is it any wonder? But with all of this, we will be sad to leave our Freshmen Class, and we wish to thank our beloved teachers, the Sisters, for the brightest spots in our memories. Our Freshmen days will end with our choral contributions to the Graduating Class of ’42.
