Irene Possumato Would you like to board our Memory Boat with me and sail the River of Our Yesterdays? You would? Fine, let’s go! We are now steaming up the channel to our Freshmen Year. Almost at once we meet “Deep-browed Homer” and plunge into the Odyssey. Odysseus is quite the man. . . Soon the Polling Station demands our attention and we cast our votes for the election of Class Officers ... on we go to Amateur Hour. Nothing common or mean marks our first appearance behind the ? ? ? footlights. . . Next, our May Procession and a whispered prayer that “I” may some day be that fortunate one to crown Our Lady. . June, and our choral contribution to the Seniors of ’37. We are drifting with the current into the Sophomore Year, but our entry is saddened as we experience more and more “the thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to”, by the passing of our beloved pastor and friend. Father Jackson. Caesar looms on our horizon, .more than Gaul is divided. . . safely passed... We begin to lose our Freshmen shyness just in time to show forth our best on Memorial Day and the First Field Mass in Vineland . . How often through the years will that “inward eye which is the bliss of solitude” recall the beauty of that May morning. We would linger, but Junior Land beckons us onward. Many literary celebrities cross our path as we approach the Second Province of Junior Land. . . We walk again with Lady Macbeth, hear the bell, and almost feel the thrust of the dagger which kills Macbeth. From tragedy to humor ’tis more than a step. . We are glad to go to Church with Sir Roger de Coverely and relive the scenes in the life of that staid country gentleman in rural England. . .Laughter and tears. . “Hence, loathed Melancholy”. . “Hence, vain, deluding Joys”...May, and the never-to- be-forgotten event of our high school days. .Gaily w?“trip it. . .On the light fantastic toe”,. . .to our Junior Prom. . Aboard once more. At last we are pulling for the Senior Shore. We must disembark so that we may travel inland. No need to worry—the roads are plainly marked . . .“To be or not to be—that is the question”. . First Fridays. “Be in your pews at five minutes of eight, please”. . “There’s rosemary for Leases remembrance”. . .The clash of steel on armor? Gareth doing battle for Lynette. “nose tip tilted”. . Just a few steps up, away from the busy street to keep watch for a little while before our Eucharistic King . . Flash! ! ! Two thousand tickets. . .Sold. . .Sighs of relief. .. ‘‘Come, O my voice, and let raise To heaven’s bright Queen a song of praise” . . .It is Our Lady’s Office, our Sodality. . Retreat. . Our Play. .Thank you for your presence. Hark! the bell! It summons us to Washington ...we hope. “Time, you old gypsy man, Will you not stay?”...Our journey is coming to an end. Parting is such sadness. . .Last instructions before we set out on the Ocean of Life. . .1 hope your journey has been a pleasant one. . . Au revoir, until we meet again. Phyllis M. Curcio 936 - iqifo Thanks for the memories Of ink spots on the floor And knocks upon the door— Of parties gay— The senior play— We wish that there were more. Oh, thank you so much. Thanks for the memories Of lessons and tests And the projects that were pests;— Of study halls, And curtain calls. Yes, those and all the rest— Oh, thank you so much. —Ursula Koering I like classmates. They’re full of fun; And always ready To help some one. Each one’s diff’rent, Of course that’s true. Sometimes they’re happy; Sometimes they’re blue. They must conquer Some likes and hates. These are the reasons I like classmates. Mary Genevieve Walsh Leases eu Will On this tenth day of April, in the year of Our Lord Nineteen Hundred Forty, We, the Seniors of Sacred Heart High School, being of sound mind, do bequeath: To Our Alma Mater: Our unfailing loyalty. To the Faculty: Our sincere gratitude and affection for their untiring efforts in helping us reach our goal. To Our Fortunate Underclassmen: The Freshmen: Our dignified and aloof manner. The Sophomores: Our refreshing simplicity. The Juniors: Our good will and class standing. Special bequests: Robert Halpin.............his excuses for being late to Edo Fiocchi; Rosemary Goodman .........her giggle to Virginia Luisi; Peter Polmonari...........his parking space to John Edwards; Mary Genevieve Walsh......her dramatic ability to Elizabeth Gavigan; Anthony Monari............his tall stories to John Hennessy; Margaret Negherbon........her pleasant smile to Bertha Fleming; Nicholas DeBello .........his coat hanger and hook to Paul Ney; Mary Riggio...............her detached air to Rita Rancati; Francis Vondra ...........his way with the ladies to John Dalton; Mary Wilson...............her salesmanship to Caroline Bascelli; Kathryn Jones.............her Seat on the bus to Margaret Stadler; SEAL WITNESSES: Martin VanHook Henry Healy SIGNED: William DTppolito Loav’es Once Tltele Was Q Student Once upon a time there was a Catholic student and. .. He read the Protestant accounts of how, just before the Protestant Reformation, the Church had lost its zeal, did little for the advancement of culture (in spite of the Renaissance of course), and was so corrupt that... “I can’t understand,” said the Catholic student, “how the Catholic people in those days let the conditions get that way. If I’d been a Catholic then...” And he went out to see a movie. He read that in the days just before the French Revolution Catholic conditions were no better than they should be, that social reforms were needed, that the rich grew richer and the poor poorer. ‘‘Believe me,” he said, ‘‘if I’d been alive then, I’d have made an effort to get conditions right side up before anything happened, and...” He went out and watched football practice. He read an attack on Spain. ‘‘What.” demanded the writer, who obviously hated the Church, ‘‘did the Spanish Catholics do for the poor? How sincere was their religion? Did it affect their lives, their social consciousness ?” ‘‘Wouldn’t that make you tired?” demanded the student. ‘‘What was the matter with those Spanish Catholics? Why didn’t they get busy and DO something about conditions? Certainly they saw...” And he straightened his tie and set out to take his girl to a dance. The next day a famous priest came to his school. “Let’s not worry about the past,” said the priest. “It’s the present that matters. I don’t know anything about yesterday, but I’m worried about what you—yes. you in the seats there—are doing today. What are you doing for the Church? What will you, you who can affect the whole future, do right here and now?” And when the lecture was over and the student had vigorously applauded, he and a gang of the other students sat in the booth in their famous hangout and had a bull session on whether Artie Shaw was really better than Benny Goodman. Only maybe I’m wrong, and he got so busy that no future student will be able to say of him, “Why didn’t HE do something? Guest editorial by Rev. Daniel A. Lord. S. J.
