Text from Pages 1 - 142 of the 1938 volume:

inc Leases To the memory of finirrntb JFranria H. iarksnn Long years ago Lincoln spoke of the futility of words to express adequately regret for a great personal loss. It is no easier now than then. Yet, this little souvenir of the Class of 1938 would be incomplete did we not voice our sorrow at the passing of one who took such a vital interest in all that concerned our High School days. He corrected our mistakes, encouraged us in disappointment, comforted us in sadness, rejoiced in our joy. Although happier times have come for him, we feel confident he is bidding us Godspeed as we fare forth to new fields and new endeavors. Rev. William J. Hickey, S. T. ') LILLIAN MARIE WATKINS 320 Elmer Street Small, dainty, with smiling eyes. Whose charming presence disperses sighs.” Freshman Year It was a clear, bright September day in 1934 when we first entered Sacred Heart High portals. “Freshman Day” was the big social event of our year. Dressed as ordered by the illustrious Seniors, we made our way to school amid the laughter of the populace. Our green ribbons, mismated shoes and stock- ings made us a trifle conspicuous but nothing could daunt our spirit; there was no mistake made that day, as to who were the lower classmen. In the afternoon the Seniors conducted the Initiation Exercises, and then rewarded their “little brothers and sisters” with a treat of candy. The next step in our Social Calendar was our first prom. With a maximum of hope and a minimum of experience, arrayed in our finery we made our debut in the social whirl. Last, but not least, was our trip to Philadelphia, another day the memory of which will long be treasured. To be sure, the city officials failed to hand us the “Key” but that little discourtesy did not mar our joy. Before we could realize it the month of June had come and our first year of high school was over. Our baby-days” had ceased, and our hearts swelled with pride. Sophomore Days We found, when we began our second year, that all our classmates had not the opportunity to return, but those who had the good fortune to continue assumed the accepted “Sophomore Air”. Our pursuit of knowledge took us far afield and not always did we walk “in a garden”. Preserved not only in our mind but also in our olfactory sense is the memory of exploring the secrets of nature in the biology lab. It is not for us to say whether we were sophs or moros. At long last June—and Junior Year During our Junior Year social activities were at their peak. We attended many parties given by the class as well as several dances. On December 1, a one-act play “College Bred” was presented by our class. ine Lassicq This year was made outstanding by preparation for the great event of the Sacred Heart social calendar—the Junior prom. After months of preparation and great anxiety the great night arrived. In a rainbow hued ballroom, couples danced to the strains of Clyde Emerson’s Orches- And now we prepare to bid farewell to dear Sacred Heart by pre- senting the record of our Senior Year A few weeks before our return to school, God took to Himself our devoted Pastor and good friend. At the request of the class the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was offered for the eternal repose of his soul. Under the leadership of our capable class president, the serious business of preparing for the Washington trip got under way. Numerous activities, such as food sales, dances and parties, were conducted that this dream of our High School days might be realized. Nought say we here of our activities in the field of athletics save this—that for the first time since we entered the four lap race through high school (and we did it in four laps) we have the right and honor of claiming leadership in inter-class basketball competition. Then began the work to make as entertaining as possible the play which we present to you this evening. DORIS P. SCHMIDT, ’38. fad anc) 'Testament ojj ilte Glass o{j ’$8 We, the class of ’38, being of sound mind and body, do hereby propose our last will and testament: We bequeath the following: To our beloved Juniors First—Our ability to solve Problems of Democracy, as well as our interest in American History and the Alphabetical Enigmas. Second—Our comfortable student chairs. Third—The gruesome entertainment afforded by Shakespeare’s san- guinary “Hamlet”. To our treasured Sophomores First—Our ability to maintain our class president, and other officers in office during the full term of that office. Second—Our habit of conducting class meetings in a peaceful and harmonious manner. Third—Our standing room in the gasoline station, which the boys have so long coveted. To our precious Freshmen First—Our dignity which we have been four years in acquiring. Second—Our sometime military bearing and nonchalant manner. Third—The privilege of using and sitting in our honored places at lunch period. If we may express one last hope for the Class of ’39, it is that your Senior Year will be as happy and educational as ours has been. We name our Pastor, Rev. William J. Hickey, D.D., as executor and we are sure that he will carry out our desires in the best way possible. The Class of 1938 does hereby sign, seal, and publish this document in the presence of us who have, at the request of the said class, hereto affixed our signatures. FRANCIS R. THALKEN ’38 MADELINE C.
