They cast an aureole of school spirit about their symbol and passed it down-class by class-until today the Shamrock with all its brightness has become a precious heritage. However, any symbol in order to retain its true purpose and fresh vitality has to be re-interpreted from time to time lest its real meaning fade into mystery. Because of this, the 1959 SHAMROCK has rediscovered its own symbolism. vS' Lil ' i H ' Y YD I W if fwflwfffi? Certainly, they recalled, he was a teacher worthy of any class- room. They remembered his debates with the pagan chiefs and the legends en- circling them. One story very dear to them was that of the Shamrock. When the angered pagans demanded of him to prove that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are Three Persons, yet one in essence, the sturdy missionary was, at first, non- plussed. His eyes lighted upon a shamrock growing nearby. He picked a leaf, de- manding of his opponents whether or not he held up one leaf or three leaves. If one leaf, then why three lopes of equal size? If three leaves, then why only one stem? His accusers were silenced, for they could not explain. And if you cannot explain so simple a mystery as the shamrock, how can you learn to understand one so profound as the Holy Trinity? Since the shamrock had become for them a symbol of their Catholic faith, could not their faith in Catholic education be included ini it? Their decision resulted in the students incorporating the shamrock into their school symbolism. All Dearborn, today, recognizes the shamrock as belonging to Sacred Heart School. 1 P lllm IQIQFIZ K.Xi'rrliaf Xlwllxljzluxru XX,!l'4l Il Il,IlI!'. 1 Page 6 THE FACULTY The Right Reverend Monsignor Walter R, Hardy -wv- ,------ S Ociology Reverend Robert B. As the students grow like their Divine teacher in wisdom, age, and grace, they see more clearly than before just what their responsibility is toward God, toward themselves, and toward each of their neighbors. They see more clearly than before their position in the Mystical Body of Christ and the consequent obligations of this position. They see the necessity of advancing in knowledge, in justice, and in charity so that they may be worthy to be integrated into the work of their Head, Christ jesus. This spirit of unity, this spirit of each working differently and together to produce a common product-a totally formed Christian who realizes fully that he is a member of the Mystical Body of Christ-is the meaning of the Shamrock as a symbol in the student body. -1- r , H- me ...f ..f ,.- 4 is ixc .
