A rejection for Keithlev The 1987-88 basketball campaign started out with an abun- dance of expectations, dreams, goals, and ended with results. The Irish did indeed give the trophy case it’s biggest prize in S.H. history. But there were times that many of us wondered how far the team could really go. As the season wore on, the Irish continued to squeeze out close games and win the ones that they were supposed to. All young teams are expected to stumble with composure some time during a season, and they tripped at Baileyville, KS, right before the Districts. But the Irish silenced concerns with District victories over Humboldt and Southeast, and left the noise-making to the tremendous Irish faithful. So the Irish prepared for the “Battle of Waterloo, for the right to go to state. The battle turned into a massacre and once again critics surfaced questioning the competition of our district. But the pride of the team turned the speculation into championship perfor- mances over Spencer, Polk-Hordville, and Humphrey. Quietly behind the glitter and glory lies the team’s true tribute: it was not 5 players who sweat blood in long practices, it was 13. It was not 5 who won 23 games, but a proud 13 standing as one. — Matt Knobbe 23 Coaches give one last time. This picture says a thousand words.
